Who should be the captain next year?

I love marner but he is not captain material. Definitely a leader which is why I would try to get an A on his jersey but not C

Captain is up to matthews or rielly (been here and drafted here and our future)
Assistant is tavares (just got here)

Matthews is obviously a vocal leader and a very good one at that. Also our most talented, and best player.

1. Tavares. Because there isn’t a clear cut candidate I just seem to default to Tavares. He doesn’t have the high end ceiling of a Matthews/Marner and he wasn’t drafted here but he’s just the natural and safe choice

2. Morgan Rielly - Good speaker, #1 d-man, well respected. If there’s one knock it’s that he doesn’t have a mean streak and he isn’t a shutdown defender and I’d want my captain to be elite defensively

3. Auston Matthews - He has all the perceived attributes of a captain. 6’3, big, strong, drafted here, well spoken. It was his captaincy to lose and he lost it with that contract and recent play after getting the contract. I was in heavy favour of giving him the captaincy now I’m off that team

It's been three years without a C. JT may not be with us in 6. Who knows about Matthews? We might not be able to afford Reilly when he asks for $11M in a few years. I'd like someone to wear it for at least 10 years this time. That leaves Marner.

Beyond a doubt it is Tavares. Just because you can score (Marner , Matthews ) does not make you Captain. I think you need that Leadership "it" factor and the maturity to deal with the media in the Toronto Market. Rielly would be my next choice.

Sorry, agree to disagree.

Matthews has shown very little in game leadership, especially with his lackidaisical play thus far in the playoffs both last year and this year to date.

He sure hasn't been as INVOLVED and ENGAGED to date in regular season, or playoff games, to the level that Tavares and Marner have shown.

Again JMHO.

I picked Tavares. They all get along great as mates. Thats great. Giving it to the vets is honourable and just smoother.
 
1 more year without a C
JT only been here a year, not sure if Matthews or Marner earned it yet. Love Mo, but he will only have 3 years left on his contract.

I hate the argument that the "best" player should get the C.
Sometimes the best players are not captain material. IE Kessel.
We have so many good players that some major pieces won't even get a letter. Not the worst problem.
 
why do we need a captain? The notion of a captain of a team is something that is gone by the wayside. Back in the 60's when coaches and managers had all the power the captain was the go between person for the team and management.

In today's NHL the power has shifted to the players and now most coaches interact with their players and guys like Dubas interact with the players more than ever.

So why name 1 guy. I am pretty sure Babs has a leadership group they assembled and they provide feedback for the guys.

So why not just have 4 alternate captains which makes up your leadership group. Tavares, Matthews, Marner, Reilly or Kadri that way there is no pressure on one single individual to hold the C. NO phaneuf to shat on, no one single guy the media can point out.

Just makes more sense to name 4 guys than keep the old school sentimentality of naming a Captain.
 
If you pick Mathews... I think you would find less blow back saying Hyman, however I hate to break the Hyman news to you all Hyman haters.
 
picked Marner but Rielly is just as deserving

Marner with the C and Rielly and Mathews with the A

Nailed it. Look at the whole picture. Tavares has it all.
 
This is the third playoffs in a row where the Leafs don’t have a captain. And it could be the third straight year they get turfed in the 1st round.

There are 6 teams who have adopted this stupid trend, and 4 of them missed the playoffs. The Leafs and the “Golden Knights” (cringe) are the only 2 playoff teams without captains - as if I needed another reason to hate that wretched franchise.

Honestly, I think the league should make it mandatory to pick 1 captain. It’s one of the cool traditions of the game that makes it special.

To go 3 years without one is lame. Put the damn C on Matthews or Tavares or whoever. It would look so stupid to have 3 alternates accept the Cup. Sadly, I don’t see that happening.
 
You say it's stupid and act like it's ridiculous to not have one, but you don't give any reasons why it even matters.

The Rangers in 2014 didn't have a captain when they won the Eastern Conference Championship and last year the Golden Knights didn't have a captain when they won the Western Conference Championship. I realize both teams lost in the Stanley Cup Final those years, however there was nothing stupid when they went to accept the Prince of Wales Trophy and Clarence S. Campbell Bowl and they proved you don't need a captain to make the Final.
