Who should be the captain next year?

Tavares hasn't been here from the start. Matthews has under preformed and gouged the leafs on his contract. Marner doesnt need the added pressure and doesnt really stand out as someone who is a spokesman for this team. Obvious answer is Rielly.

If anyone else, Tavares.

Rielly is a solid A.

Why not Mitch, seriously? Because he looks young? Give me a break... because he has no captain experience? Because he wasn't a 1st overall? He's our best player, from Toronto, our hardest worker, and wants to be here.
 
Will not be Mathews a Captain leads by example this guy does not bring it every game. He's not a vocal guy either from what I see either however who knows behind closed doors. From what I do see Marner is becoming a true leader but again what is said in locker room to teammates and who has others respect is what will be used to decide the Captain.
 
Apparently Mitch is getting an OS, I heard it during game 1 and on the radio one day this week....
 
For certain it'll be Marner or Rielly. Has to be one of the drafted guys to keep the core happy. I wouldn't name Tavares just in case the youngsters get all butt hurt. I voted Marner, but am happy with Mo.

Its Tavares for me or Rielly. Mo was on the Leafs when things were bad and hes matured and he is like a team dad at a ripe age of 20something.

Can anyone confirm if this is true? Matthews as captain with the other 3 as alternates would look pretty cool. There is clearly a top-4 personnel wise and it would keep everyone happy.
 
I think the least controversial choice would be Rielly and would be fine if it were him.

At least if they did give it to Tavares it would be most likely he would basically retire a Leaf which is nice. Probably Mitch too.

The way I always remember it is teams have 1 captain and 2 alternate captains. If a team does not have a captain like Toronto at this time, it's why they have three players as alternate captains (Tavares, Rielly, Marleau) with the A on their jerseys.

It has to be Tavares or Rielly. Matthews and Marner are young and don't need that weight on their shoulders. They're only 21 for goodness sakes- they will get a shot at captaincy later in their careers. The team captain should be an older, more established player. Tavares has that experience and left captaincy on the Island to come here in Toronto- that alone makes a pretty good case for him getting the C (not to mention his outstanding first year as a Leafs). Rielly is a Norris trophy candidate, by far the best Dman on this team, and is one of the longest standing Leafs on this team. Would love to see him or Tavares get that C.
