Who is the best defender in this year's draft NOT named Jiricek or Nemec?

Probably not a popular opinion. But Korchinski is better than Jiricek. Furthermore, gap between Korchinski and Nemec is less than between him and Jiricek.

Substantiate that ridiculous opinion please.
First of all, I’d never spend top-10 pick for defenseman with skating issues like Jiricek has. Also Korchinski has better offensive IQ, better decision making in D-zone. Only two things can make Jiricek better - one-timer and NHL ready size.

Why do you think Korchinski has better offensive IQ than Jiricek ? It is Jiricek most glaring quality, he is a very smart player. Jiricek wouldn't be anywhere near the top if he didn't have great offensive IQ, thats his main strength. Jiriceks skating isn't a weakness and his flaws are easily coachable, stride length is mostly the problem. He's still very fluid in his edges and he still has good speed, even with this.

Korchinski is a good open ice skater but his edges are not as good and he's bad at pivoting on his weak side (I think, i dont remember which side, most players are worse on their weak side so Ill say weak.) Still a better skater than Jiricek, no contest here.

I can't agree on the hockey IQ though, especially defensively. Korchinski literally doesn't know where to go in the D zone lmao, he is probably one of the worst defenders in the top 50.

Adjusted NHLE has Denton Mateychuk, Kevin Korchinski, Pavel Mintyukov and Lane Hutson.

If you don't want to adjust for height at all, it's Lane Hutson. If you do, it's either Mateychuk or Korchinski.

It's Mateychuk and for me it's not overly close but a lot will depend what situation these players go into aka how many PP points will they get. Personally points don't matter as much as if said player makes guys around him better vs is a product of the players around him. Mateychuk drives play better than the rest

HM to Bichsel and Pickering who have the potential albeit more unlikely to hit big time.

Hutson probably scores like 60 points in the NHL in 5 years and people will be like man I wish my team drafted him #35 overall instead of a nobody.
But will he be able to defend against NHL players? How tall is he again?

The best right now or who will end up the best? Going by history, it is overwhelmingly likely to not be Nemec or Jiricek.

Mateychuk, Mintyukov, then Bichsel
I really believe Bichsel is going to be the 3rd D taken in this draft. Mateychuk will be penalized a few spots due to his size and Mintyukov is going to worry a few teams about his ability to translate his game to the NHL. The NHL loves size and Bichsel has enough raw tools to become a special player. He is what every GM is looking for.

He might be, Bichsel is probably my favourite prospect this year. Tons of potential. I've been saying for a while I think a team takes him between 15-20. Maybe earlier like 12-15. I don't think he'll fall past 20 and if he does that's a steal.

I've been annoying my fellow Duck fans saying that Verbeek is going to take him 10th. Verbeek was with TB when they took Hedman. He was with Detroit when they took Seider and Edvinsson. Just makes too much sense IMO.

Hes also not a super good skater aside from a few one tricks he does.

I see very little IQ IMO.

I wanna give a bit of light to three of my favorites though
Havelid
Bischel
Odellius
What do u like about bichsel and odelius? I haven’t been able to sink my teeth into them

I agree, Korchinski can really struggle to move the puck out of the dzone with pressure. He’s a whiz in the o zone though. Jiricek is on a different tier in comparison to him

Bischel is already playing a pro game against men and he's suuuuper aggressive, whether thats defensively or offensively. He loves to pinch down low and try to force plays. His skating is good to me, in the same sense that Hedman's is good, very long and heavy stride but the lengths make him move at speed. He has a cannon shot and his hands are soft enough to manipulate defenders.

At best ? You have a Subban type of player (Without the incredible edges, substituted for more size.) that is super aggressive and can control the flow of the game. At worst, you get something like Ben Chiarot, which is a pretty fair floor for a late first, early 2nd pick.

Odellius has a similar dynamic, pro game, untapped offensive upside. I particularly like his shot selection on the blue line, his pucks always find the net, very good to create offense without. He's not aggressive though, he's much more tame and thinks the game a lot. Similarly though, you have a kid that could be a 30-40 points ES player all while contributing on the PP if he develops well. IMO, his worst case is also probably a NHL player, he's too smart already not to be there. He's kind of the budget Nemec of this draft. He's also very good at the simple things that make a great Dman. Quick transition up ice, keeping the puck in on the line, circling the puck and evading pressure on the blue line. Typical of "smaller" Ds though, he needs work on his positioning, strength... Yada yada.

To note, I have all of those guys above Korchinski, and more, but I really don't like Korchinski 😂 (Take this with a grain of salt, I didn't like Zegras and Hughes either (Though I believed both would be vanilla NHL players.))

I’ve got Bichsel as the second off my board after Nemec followed by Jiricek and Mintyukov. I can hardly fathom taking Korchinski ahead of any of those guys.

Scoring points is nice and all but not really the most important thing I look for in a defender.

What’s the best D that might be around in the top of the second round ? If my Deviks go Slafkovsky at 2 , I’d really hope they go RHD with their 2nd rounder unless one of the Russian stud forwards fall into the top of the second

Hamara, Havelid, Luneau, Warren, Grudinin, Duda, and more should be around in the 2nd
