Pre-Game Talk: [GM51] Vancouver Canucks @ Dallas Stars | Fri, Jan. 31st | 5pm | SNP | Remember the Alamo?

Dallas will be a good test. Top 5 team in the West but should probably be better than their record as they’re second in goal differential at plus 36 behind only Winnipeg. If they’re missing Heiskanen we should be pretty evenly matched imo. Let’s make it 4 in a row!

Giving out a NMC to a guy like Soucy is insane.

What's insane is living with the knowledge that he likely would've gotten $4M without one. Yeesh.

Y'know why free agency doesn't work? All money is guaranteed. I'm very happy Luke Schenn got his well-earned sunset contract, but I'm very happy we didn't give it to him as well.

So we're stuck with Soucy unless you're keen on giving out another pick. We can't really afford to spend like that, so just throw him on the right side and let the zebra run wild and free. I say.

i can’t believe seguin and benn are even still playing, let alone eating up $19+ million on a contender

Dallas is just like Vancouver, (wonder why), but with 150% less panic.

I thought Heiskanen was carried off the ice in the Vegas game with a "lower body" injury.

Sequin's absence might be Miller audition if he chose to go there.

More of a challenge playing a team in a playoff spot, more wins than losses.

If the Canucks can find another top 3 defensemen I think they should deploy them similar to how Dallas does. Play your top 3 heavy minutes all above 22 mins a game and then your bottom 3 play less than 17 mins.

If VAN can get a #3 dman and Myers still looks good with Hughes, I would give the top4 dmen 20min+. Play Soucy/whomever very little.

If Myers reverts, then I agree with your deployment.

On the game: I like how VAN matches up against DAL. Still not favoured, but this is their type of game.

i think soucy is like edler in a way, where a questionable suspension got handed out and he was never the same player

my fingers and toes are crossed for the same being true of myers, but in the opposite direction

but in either event, as a 4/5 i don’t really have any worries that soucy will turn it around. in a vacuum, i still trust him way more than i trust myers and we’ve seen glimpses of the old soucy this year. but the real question is, can we ever have the personnel to be able to play him as a 4/5 like last year post-zadorov trade?

I was pleased with the decision to start Demko vs Dallas, though I can't say I was expecting the performance he came up with. But I hate it when teams run with their starter until they reach the point where they have to choose between an exhausted #1 and a cold #2.

I expect a strong game from a rested Lankinen, making for a Canucks loss but with the score closer than the play would suggest.

I think Soucy looks fine… when away from Juulsen. Not as good as last year and he had a slow start… but keep him away from Juulsen.
The Canucks 'right-side options on the blueline are Hronek, Myers, Juulsen and Desharnais. That's it.

One of the advantages of pairing Hughes with Myers, is that Hronek can slide down the lineup. Maybe if he was paired with someone like Soucy, it wouldn't look so bad. But right now, that pairing of Soucy and Juulsen give you that sinking feeling in your stomach, every time they're out there.

It's the reason why Wilander is almost an automatic 'plug and play' unless he does a full-on face-plant once he hits the NHL.

Soucy is 30, looked competent enough last year, and has been playing up the lineup with Juulsen off of his preferred side. I want to see more of him with EP25 before writing him off.

Soucy looked fine offside when other Pettersson was in the lineup. Tocchet needs to swallow his defenseman handedness fetish and just play the best guys. Literally the only reason Juulsen has a job is he’s right-shot.
