What do you guys think about Dobson? I've seen him projected to go at 9 in quite a few mocks. Then I read the opinions on him and get a little nervous. Descriptions like "safe pick" and "low ceiling/high floor" aren't that encouraging. Then again, some scouting reports compare him to Ryan Suter and Alex Pietrangelo.
He’s a high ceiling/high floor guy. I think at worst he’s a 3D. Kids got every tool and is one of the best skaters in the draft...he’s 6’3.
Only like 185 lbs as well so he has filling out to do, I like him more than Bouchard and Boqvist (Not Hughes) great offensive instincts and is the best defensively out of the dmen, really good offensively as well, has above a PPG.

At least we didn’t fall to 10th. That’s where the draft has a big drop off, there is a consensus top 9 (Dahlin, Svech, Hughes, Zadina, Dobson, Bouchard, Wahlstrom, Tkachuk, Boqvist; i’d also add Farabee but some people don’t see it that way)

If were drafting 9 and both boqvist and wahlstrom are on the board I'd take boqvist and trade whatever it takes (within reason) to Edmonton (they're 10th right?) To grab wahlstrom as well. I'd call that a coup.

If Boqvist and Wahlstrom are both there at 9th, you select 9th, go home, and praise Jesus.

Don't tempt the fates.

There's a clear top 9, I think one team does something stupid because at least one team always does, and we have our choice of two.

And if it's f***ing Boqvist and Wahlstrom, Gorton should just get naked on stage.

I'm all about keeping the 9th overall rather than trying to trade a huge haul just to move to 4. If Wahlstrom drops to 9 its a no brainer if Boqvist does i'm not sure anymore after his second concussion. I know we are stacked at center but maybe Kotkaniemi would be the smarter pick? (assuming Bouchard/Dobson are gone)

If Wahlstrom drops to 4? You mean, you believe he is more likely to be picked than Dahlin, Scechnikov, or Zadina in the top 3?

General inquiry: Do you guys follow these prospects throughout the year? Or do you mostly look at rankings as the draft approaches and research the top performers then? The degree to which some of you seem to know these kids just blows me away.
Absolutely blows me away as well. One would think with all this ""knowledge" and scouting expertise that these people are in front of the TV 25/8......i mean 24/7. Not being a wise ass......i am just "blown away" and simply cannot fathom it. I can barely follow the whole NHL. HA! More honestly, the eastern conference.

No one watches every game, but there have been plenty of opportunities to watch CHL prospects on the weekend showcase, or I just find streams for some juniors games when I get the chance. Sometimes there’s the rare chance I find a KHL stream to watch Shesty, but I mainly see the Euro kids during the WJCs. USHL highlights ans videos are littered throughout twitter and youtube

Yeah bud....thats totally awesome. I would LOVE to, cant seem to find the time. You know, work, upkeep of house, 3 dogs etc. Life sucks.

Changed my mind...if this is the menu, I’m thinking they may go to Kotkaniemi.
The Rangers really need to think about Sam Rosen's health and well being. This pick would propose a problem. Sam is just a little older than I, and I have a problem pronouncing Smith and Jones, let alone Kotkaniemi. Actually sounds like 2 players in 1. Kotka and Anti Niemi.

Ty Smith, Barrett Hayton, Joe Veleno and even Jesperi Kotkaniemi could all be candidates to sneak into the top 8.
Yeah,so i have heard. So which team are we predicting that does the reaching? Can't be any of top 5. So that would be Vancouver, Chicago and Detroit as possibilities. But please don't let it be our Rangers doing anything stupid. I want Bouchard but Dobson would be fine with me. We need defensemen that have an offensive side to them. Doesn't every team? Really wouldn't surprise me in the least that Gorton believes we have enough defensemen (newly acquired) and goes for offensive talent.

Maybe I'm crazy, but everything about what the org and FO has been saying this off-season has me thinking that Farabee is their guy. He's a character guy. Young captain. Two-way forward. Might not be the best pick of the draft, but will play in the NHL.

Taking him at 9 would be crazy. Trading down to ~13 and grabbing him there would be smarter, but still not ideal.

Trading up to take Tkachuk would be a nightmare.

Part of me really believes this brass is looking at Andersson and adding Farabee and believing they have their leadership group for the next core right there.

We've got what, two months before the draft? Might as well start hating each other now ;)

Ty Smith is a kid I've consistently had in my top 12/pre-drop tier all season.

With the way people talk, you'd almost never guess the kid played a total of 76 games in the WHL this season and posted a line of 16-64-80, and a + 49.

Yes he's undersized, but he's also keenly aware of his surroundings, plays a strong two-way game, moves the puck well, doesn't get caught and gets results.

Not as flashy as some of the smaller defenders in the draft, or as big as some of the guys with steady defensive games, he's almost caught in the middle because he ranks high in almost every category, but doesn't necessarily score the highest in any on area. But that's not reflective of him being limited or lacking a high ceiling, it's just not as sexy as some of the other options.

I have to tell you, I think Farabee's skill level is severely underrated. Yes he's a leader, and a character guy and plays a 200 foot game. But this kid has great hands, a great wrister with a quick release, excellent vision, etc.

People keep trying to paint him as a support guy because he doesn't necessarily score highlight reel goals, but this kid isn't exactly scoring goals off deflections and rebounds either.

Frankly, he's not on a line with Wahlstrom so that Wahlstrom can "lift" Farabee's offensive game. He's on a line with Wahlstrom so that the line keeps going when Wahlstrom looks like he's attending open skate night at the local rink. I'd caution people not to underestimate the skill level on this kid.

I'm not saying he lacks skill, but I think his skill compared to the guys who are projected to be drafted around him is probably less.

I could be wrong.
