Just spitballing here but is there any thought to the team taking a right d ala Dobson and looking towards 2019 for the pmd left d? Haven't seen any mention of 2019 prospects.

2019 is the opposite of this draft. Not a lot of premium dmen but a ton of premium forwards. There are a few dmen though (Byram, Honka, Robertson) but mostly forwards. It’d be best if we took a dman at 8th this year and then grabbed a forward next year (assuming we suck again and pick top 15) 2019 looks to also be a very good draft

2019 seems to be a center and winger heavy year. I don't know if it matters though. The league is getting younger and so much talent is coming it atm.

Unless we don't trade up we're left with reaching for Farabee or drafting a D that dropped out of the early field. As much as I like Kotkaniemi, there is just no need for him. Much rather have Farabee then. We can focus on a C next year. As of now that position is saturated.

Just too bad we wont be getting Bouchard it seems.

Kotkaniemi is so much better than farabee it’s not even close. That would be extremely short sighted. Move Lias to the wing. Don’t pass on a guy this good to get a middle six left winger. A position that is the easiest to get in the entire league.

Kotkaniemi is great. Ever since I first saw him in September, I've been tracking him. I initially went to the game to watch Heiskanen, but it was Kotkaniemi who stood out in that game and I've had discussions with people about Kupari being better than Kotkaniemi. I never agreed with that. I still feel Chytil is the one moved to wing if we have to move some players around. To me, he just doesn't have the defensive awareness to play center in the NHL

Agreed with everything you said until you got To Chytil. He’s barely 18. Defense is the easiest thing to learn. He’s already got the understanding of it. He’s a dominating center prospect no reason to move him to wing.

Lias on the other hand looks much much better at wing than center at every level

One thing to think about with all the LHD we have on our team and in the system...the top of the 1st is loaded with RHD then the bottom are mostly LHD. I know we won't be picking based off positions and needs but we do need to add talent at RHD.

Centers can move to wing. To me Farabee and Kotkaniemi are close and if the Rangers like the Finn better they should go with him. Andersson played as much on the left wing it seemed in Sweden as he did at center. He's very good at cycling the puck and working the boards. Lias might also be a little better suited for wing because his skating speed is kind of average right now. To me it's a non-issue going with a guy who is basically a center.

It's disappointing that we didn't win the lottery. It's disappointing we dropped a spot...but we're still in position to get a really, really good player and IMO there is not a whole lot to differentiate the 4 through 9 guys and we're in the 9th spot so we should get one of them. The next 6-7-8 guys after them should be really good too and if we can move into that area for our second 1st rounder that might make up a lot for the disappointment that came from the lottery.

There's no point to being depressed--the team has to go ahead. It's a process and it might take another season or two before we're ready to compete for a playoff position. It's not out of line to think that it could even happen next year if we can cobble together a decent defense in front of Henrik. In the meantime we are going to have quite a number of intriguing young players coming into our system. Adding Howden, Hajek, Lindgren and Rykov at the deadline + the draft picks + the likes of Andersson and Chytil last year + Pionk, Georgiev and Shesterkin and Lettieri and maybe others like Bigras, Day, Gettinger, Ronning, Huska etc. etc. There's a lot to look forward to in the next few years watching all this pan out.

I stayed away most of the weekend because the responses were overdramatic to depressing to comical but here's my take in a nutshell:

-It's mathematics specifically probability: the Rangers were right into the middle and the odds that something would go extremely right one time for seven teams behind them with three shots, and go wrong for seven teams ahead of them one time with three shots were extremely high. If they moved down to 10 or 11, that's a tragedy but one spot while not good is not the worst case in the world.

-Calgary got off the hook. I was more worried about the Islanders winning the lottery. And while it's more in the nature of Devils/Islanders and even at times Flyers/Capitals/Penguins fans to be more concerned about the Rangers "suffering" than they're own team, this creates a ripple effect. If Dahlin or Svech gets picked up by the Islanders, more incentive for Tavares to stay and take "a little less." Now there's not as much incentive for him to stick around. I don't think he's coming to Manhattan but you never know. Why do I bring up the Islanders? See my final point.

-Ranger have done very well at the 9 spot historically.

-This team gets one of Giroux/Tarasenko or Cherepanov doesn't pass away, maybe 2014 is a different ballgame. Kopitar was also picked one spot before Staal in 2005. Their is always elite talent after the top few picks. It's time to find an elite player through hard work. It can be done, it's up to the scouts to get it right.

-I'd keep all three first rounders or at least two of three if it was up to me. I know some have mentioned the whole "don't want too many players the same age getting new contracts the same time" angle which is rubbish. Development is different AND an NCAA player may get his ELC a few years later (K'Andre Miller anyone?)

-The top 3 wasn't as catastrophic as some had hoped. Dahlin will make the Sabres better: but that team beyond an oft-injured superstar (Eichel), Mittlested, ROR, and Risto who was brought into the league waaayyy too early ("hey look fanbase, we have a new toy that is young...now buy tickets") doesn't have much. No support players yet, and Lehner is an OK goalie. Canes already have a zillion forwards but that team has major, major, major concerns in net. And Montreal has a lot of really bad contracts. Zadina or Tzachuk might be good for them but unless either of those guys become a top 15 forward in the league, they don't have much room to add much to Price, Weber, Petry, Drouin, and Galchenyuk. So in terms of the conference, these three moves and the one related to the Islanders doesn't shift the balance of power THAT much at least over the next 1-2 years.

Ah yes cause that 11 month difference means Lias is done learning. Afterall, everything I learned in life I learned btw 18 and 19.

What do you guys think about Dobson? I've seen him projected to go at 9 in quite a few mocks. Then I read the opinions on him and get a little nervous. Descriptions like "safe pick" and "low ceiling/high floor" aren't that encouraging. Then again, some scouting reports compare him to Ryan Suter and Alex Pietrangelo.

Safe maybe, but I think hes a high ceiling/high floor guy.

Ceiling may not be as high as other guys but I feel much better about his chances of getting there over a guy like Bouchard, who IMO has much larger hurdles he needs to clear.

So, the silver lining here in my eyes is that whoever they grab at 9 is not going to make an immediate impact and the team is going to suck again next year. Perhaps they will suck enough to have a legitimate shot at drafting Jack Hughes in 2019, who seems to be closer to Crosby/McDavid than any of the forwards available this year.

I am still holding out hope that the Chytil and one or two of the guys they end up nabbing this year turn out to be elite players. The odds are against that happening, but at least it seems like the team recognizes that they need to make that happen to win it all.

Any yes, I realize many of you will take issue with my hope that the team really, really sucks next year and that I consider that to be a "silver lining". I disagree with your philosophy regarding team building.
