I stayed away most of the weekend because the responses were overdramatic to depressing to comical but here's my take in a nutshell:
-It's mathematics specifically probability: the Rangers were right into the middle and the odds that something would go extremely right one time for seven teams behind them with three shots, and go wrong for seven teams ahead of them one time with three shots were extremely high. If they moved down to 10 or 11, that's a tragedy but one spot while not good is not the worst case in the world.
-Calgary got off the hook. I was more worried about the Islanders winning the lottery. And while it's more in the nature of Devils/Islanders and even at times Flyers/Capitals/Penguins fans to be more concerned about the Rangers "suffering" than they're own team, this creates a ripple effect. If Dahlin or Svech gets picked up by the Islanders, more incentive for Tavares to stay and take "a little less." Now there's not as much incentive for him to stick around. I don't think he's coming to Manhattan but you never know. Why do I bring up the Islanders? See my final point.
-Ranger have done very well at the 9 spot historically.
-This team gets one of Giroux/Tarasenko or Cherepanov doesn't pass away, maybe 2014 is a different ballgame. Kopitar was also picked one spot before Staal in 2005. Their is always elite talent after the top few picks. It's time to find an elite player through hard work. It can be done, it's up to the scouts to get it right.
-I'd keep all three first rounders or at least two of three if it was up to me. I know some have mentioned the whole "don't want too many players the same age getting new contracts the same time" angle which is rubbish. Development is different AND an NCAA player may get his ELC a few years later (K'Andre Miller anyone?)
-The top 3 wasn't as catastrophic as some had hoped. Dahlin will make the Sabres better: but that team beyond an oft-injured superstar (Eichel), Mittlested, ROR, and Risto who was brought into the league waaayyy too early ("hey look fanbase, we have a new toy that is young...now buy tickets") doesn't have much. No support players yet, and Lehner is an OK goalie. Canes already have a zillion forwards but that team has major, major, major concerns in net. And Montreal has a lot of really bad contracts. Zadina or Tzachuk might be good for them but unless either of those guys become a top 15 forward in the league, they don't have much room to add much to Price, Weber, Petry, Drouin, and Galchenyuk. So in terms of the conference, these three moves and the one related to the Islanders doesn't shift the balance of power THAT much at least over the next 1-2 years.
