I forgot how awful the Oilers roster was back then. I think I will give Holland a bit more credit.

San Jose got so depleted of talent that they are still going to be garbage in 5 years, even if they manage things well.

Pittsburgh has obviously been going all-in for so long that the next 5 are going to be downhill. Same with Washington.

I can see Vegas and Tampa being pretty awful in 5 years too.

The Islanders are a popular choice but honestly I more see them falling into that mushy middle like where teams like Calgary find themselves.

Anaheim doesn’t seem to be doing much with the draft assets they built up but sooner or later they have to improve a bit. Future mushy middle team, I’d say.

5 years is forever and things change must faster in the cap era so all the above might be completely wrong. We’ll see!
The Flames will be well outside the mushy middle this season. They had a bottom-5 record after the Tanev and Hanifin trades. And now they've also lost Markstrom and Mangiapane without making meaningful additions. They'll be flat-out bad this season and likely for the next several as well, which isn't the worst place to be.

Looks like they were 7-13 after the Hanifin trade, although I could be off by a couple of games.

When some bust down doors, some succeed. Semantics, but as one can see, his agent may demand for his busting out client ..have a great summer.
OK. Keep using the phrase "Busted out" and wonder why people look at you like you've got three heads lol.

sorry brother, other things to battle, bottom line Laf busted out from the "bust label" and very well could be on his way to a 10 million dollar gig either way the "bust" police interpret.
Well he’s going to have to take a 2-3 year bridge deal then, if he hopes to get $10

Montreal…

Mediocrity in the next 5-6 years is what Montreal inspires to be….

I bet they can improve enough to achieve it and accomplish their goals.

I imagine you as an angry chihuahua.

Highly unlikely given Demidov is the greatest prospect of his generation

All Habs fan said so. The moment MTL got Demidov the usual gang would show up to spread hate on the kid.

Well when you're not cynical you see teams who don't make the playoffs as being mediocre.

Tor are an above average team who is not good enough to go deep in the playoffs or win a cup.

Just FYI mediocre means average to good-ish.

It sucks that Toronto loses in the playoffs, but at least they get there.

Average to good-ish end of year result.

They are in a pile of teams with these incredible young up and coming rosters, but doubt must be seeping in at this point.

Teams like Ottawa, Buffalo, Detroit, Montreal all apply.

MTL? We're like 2 years in the rebuild. We're good amigo.

Why are you so hung up semantics?

It eases his pain.

It really depends on what you define as mediocrity. I think Nashville, Winnipeg, St. Louis and the Islanders is the answer, because it doesn't feel like there is much untapped potential with these teams - they are what they are. Jets might be a surprise but they're going to have to beat one of the Avs/Stars in a best of 7 and I just can't see that happening, especially with the steps they've taken to make their team worse this offseason, and unless they hit a home run on a draft pick they're probably perpetually stuck getting rounded.

Mediocre means average. It denotes the state of averageness that locks a thing firmly away from greatness, being a winner, contending, success.

The Leafs are textbook mediocre. 5 plus decades of zero success, never winning, always a pretender at best, lightyears away from greatness.

The Flames weren’t mediocre last year. And without Tanev, Lindholm, Hanifin, Markstrom and Mangiapane they’re going to be a lot worse this year and likely for years to come. I think they’re much more likely to be collecting top 5 picks than sitting in the 11th - 20th overall area.

But words have usages not inherent meaning. Mediocre is often used in the sense that something is substandard and undesirable.

Where's the lie?

They've been past the second round once since then.

Mediocre is considered "worse" than bad in pro sports, because being bad is theoretically rewarded with magic beans that should bring you back to good quicker. Mediocre is mediocre and stays there. There is a reason fans embrace the tank when seasons go sideways. And that's because being bad is preferable to being mediocre. But that doesn't mean a mediocre team is bad. It's just mediocre...

Mediocre doesn’t mean staying there necessarily, you could have been bad, and then moved to mediocre, on way to being good.
