Which contract would you choose with Matthews?

Matthews contract choice

  • $12.8M x 3 years

  • $13.8M x 5 years

  • $16.7M x 8 years

5 years… rather easily too, add that contract plus the 1 year still owed on the last deal and that ties AM down for the best 6 seasons left of his career and eats up most of his “prime” 13.8 is only 1.2 above what the current high water mark is and when you look at cap% for the length of that deal considering the reasonable cap spike I think it’ll work out to be more than a good deal.
0 interest in only going 2 as then you have to re do this all over again with a prime Matthews in a higher cap world. 8 years is a long time and that 16 nearly 17m is a lot of coin until the cap catches up.

Went with 13.8 @ 5, although it should be 13.8 @ 8 considering his past sub-par year, injury risk, and the guy doesn't kill penalties like most star players.

Besides all that if he can't get us to a cup final within the next 5 years during his prime years he can walk for free as a UFA and I won't miss him nor his fancy purses
 
The middle option. I simply can't entertain 12.8M x 3 based on the paltry amount of term. Meanwhile, I love the term on the 16.7M x 8 but don't like the idea of making him the highest paid player to such an extent. By the process of elimination, we're begrudgingly left with my choice of 13.8M x 5.
 
I'd be ok with a 3 year extension at this point. we'd have him for 4 seasons and the rest of his statistical prime.
 
for UFA contracts the longer deal tends to benefit the player not the team. for example when Austin is 33 I don't really want to be paying him double digits anymore cuz I don't think he will be worth it so if posssible if I'm the leafs the 5 year deal(which is next 6 years) is the optimal term for the team. if Matthews wants to get paid the most across his career he either takes a short term 2-3 year deal or 8.

People really will just say any stupid thought that enters into their mind without a milliseconds worth of analysis into the opinion's veracity.


It's actually quite symptomatic of the general situation we find ourselves in, that by the time a ridiculous claim is disproven, a dozen more idiotic things have been said...

1st or 2nd options would be okay. 3rd option is insanity.
We wouldn't pay him 2.9m more per year to add on 3 less valuable years.
 
Good with any. They’re all very team friendly, and prove how much he cares about putting the team in the best situation to win. The ultimate sacrifice, really.
