Ovi also lost another season before his career started.
He was quoting stats after each played their first 8 seasons. At 26, Matthews has 368 goals, at the same age, Ovechkin had 339, but played one less season. Playing the same seasons their totals are almost the same

Game by game Matthews still has more. He had 2 shortened seasons (not his fault) and injuries that put the game similar.

He is 6th or 7th by metrics. I don’t expect him to keep ovy levels into his 30s. Peak he is better than ovy. But longevity counts.

Probably.

Ovy.
Gretz
Lemieux
Hull
Matthews.

Would be my guess by the end of it.
If he stays healthy til 35. Probably top 3

I don’t see Matthews cracking top 20. People having him ahead of a guy like Mike Bossy, for instance, is absolutely crazy to me.

Both could be true as most people would have Bossy higher than 20 and AM is tracking very well, at least in the regular season department to end up in the top 20, heck he might already be close.

Well he has a better first 8 seasons than Ovechkin so it wouldn't be crazy at all if he surpassed Bossy.
Considering bossy had a short career and is actually considered the greatest goal scorer of all time by many, yea i think it would be crazy to say he is ahead of mike bossy, esp at this stage of hos career....

He’s 6th all time by his age despite playing way less games and in a much lower scoring era for the first half of his career. Top 20 is ridiculous. He already has 3 rockets in 8 years. And missed a 4th by a goal when they stoped the league with 12 games to go.

Only 6 other players have led the league in goals more often. And Matthews is just in his prime he has led the league in 3 of the last 4 years. He’s already well within top 10. Probably 7th as of today.

Already beyond Mike Bossy.

These discussions are...........discussions, it's a forum I understand that.

But can we let this guy play his career before asking how he ranks vs players that are retired or nearing it?

It's dumb (to me) but maybe it's an enjoyable thing to talk about for others.

But holy crap "Where Does Auston Matthews Rank........."

Can we drop the puck please?

The first 8 years of Ovechkin's career was what great goal-scorers of the past had done. The next 8 years is what made Ovechkin legendary.
1000% this. It’s weird how many don’t get this - and bananas that some extrapolate production by other players against Ovechkin’s 30s.

Top 5: Ovechkin, Gretzky, Lemieux, Brett Hull, Dionne are top 5

I think he's getting very close to top 5.

Maybe fact check next time? Before last year, he had 7 hat tricks in 7 years which is absurdly low for an elite goal scorer. Shows how incredibly consistent he is to still put up the goal totals he has with minimal hat tricks.

Over the last 5 years, Matthews has by far the most games with at least 1 goal scored (aka consistent, not scoring in bunches).

Already won more rockets at 26 then bossy did his whole career.

Bossy had peak Gretzky and Kurri (who played with Gretzky) to contend with. Otherwise he would have led the League in goals more than twice.

Also, he scored more goals in the '83 and '84 playoffs than Matthews has scored in his entire playoff career.

AM may surpass him, but he still has quite a lot of work to do.

Bossy only played 10 seasons to Matthews 8. I was just using Ovechkin to illustrate that it's not "crazy" to think Matthews could surpass Bossy.

I never said he was ahead of Bossy at this stage of his career. Considering Bossy only played 10 years it's far from crazy that Matthews could surpass him is what I'm saying.
