Where did Yzerman go wrong with the rebuild?

Got a month guys before we need to really panic.

Why panic, the team hasn't made the playoff in 8 seasons. With a bunch of crappy contracts on the books for the next 2 seasons, it might not be a bad idea to tank one more time before Kasper/Danielson/Cossa/ASP get promoted. The team is first round fodder at best.

Pretty easy to finish last place, just start Husso every game.

honestly, i won't be mad if we miss the playoffs this year

1. let the kids crush it in their respective leagues, compete for championships
2. get another top 10 pick
3. let kane, petry, maatta, husso, lyon, fischer, motte contracts expire. leave enough cap space to cover kane's bonus this season
4. keep sending holl up and down in the hopes that someone claims him at some point
5. staple a 2nd to copp to make him go away
6. let lalonde's contract expire. hire someone new
7. have almost $18m in cap space to sign a superstar free agent
8. have the courage to promote 9 rookies next year, roll with this lineup

debrincat - larkin - raymond
mazur - kasper - tarasenko
berggren - danielson - brandsegg-nygard
soderblom - compher - rasmussen
veleno

johansson - seider
edvinsson - sandin-pellikka
chiarot - tuomisto
wallinder - gustafsson

I'm beginning to think that's what Stevie needs to do. All of these garbage UFA signings are at best gonna make this into a bubble team. Tear it all down and restart with prospects.

I don't think Soderblom and Tuo are gonna make any NHL roster though.

No way yzerman plays 9 rookies next year and we wouldn't be any where near the cap

32 saves for arvid soderblom and jets just ruined his shut out with a minute left lmao was about to say we grabbed the wrong soderblom... jinxed him haha

Compher like first center like are mine expectancy. Larkin traded away from the team building. We need Compher, Rasmussen, Kasper, Veleno, Danielson and Copp like centers. We need a strong scoring defenseman. A strong defenseman, Seider, Chiarot, Määttä, Petry, Gustafsson, Johansson, Sandin-Pellikka and Raymond, Kane, DeBrincat, Tarasenko, Fischer, Motte, Berggren and goalies Talbot, Husso and Cossa.

If Elmer is scared to get hit, he should've played goalie like his brother. He treats the puck like a hot potato in the D zone, it hasn't changed, and he'll be back in the SHL next season.

He's just not mentally tough enough for the NHL. It's a shame, but it was worth the shot they took at #159 in the draft.

I mean half of that is probably happening even if we have a good season and either make the playoffs or get very close.

Can we maybe pitch Petry to Toronto for Liljegren in return?
I'm sure he'd want to go to a outlier contender and why not take a flier on Liljegren?
His value is low, not been bad, can take some steps or potentially increase his value and gets traded elsewhere later on.

It seems like there are a number of rotating veterans on going contracts until the respective prospect is ready to take over the role?

Next year (out):
Kane (Top 6 Playmaking Winger) - Kasper In
Fischer (Checking line winger) - Mazur In
Motte (Checking line winger) - Danielsson In
Maatta (Bottom 4 LHD) - Resign Johansson
Husso (Trebuchet ammunition) - Resign Lyon
Petry (Bottom 4 RHD) - Carry 7D

2026
Tarasenko out - MBN In
Chairot Out - Sandin-Pellikka In
Holl Out - Wallinder In
Talbot or Lyon out - Cossa in

Debrincat - Larkin - Raymond
MBN - Danielsson - Compher
Mazur - Kasper - Berggren
Rasmussen - Copp - Veleno

Unknown - Seider
Edvinsson - Sandin-Pellikka
Johansson - Unknown
Wallinder

Talbot - Cossa

I don't think this will be actually what comes out barring trade, FAs, etc. but the point is that the time when we are losing key pieces out of our lineup from these bridge deal with veterans - we will have a corresponding prospect who is earmarked to role pretty seamlessly. And if and when someone isn't ready, it's easy enough to extend the timeline by a year to find another random plug till the kid is ready. It is not coincidental that a lot of these contract plugs are all gone within 2 years about the time we would expect the vast majority of the next waves of prospects to step in.

All of this makes sense and Im pretty excited about the next two seasons! It's going to be awesome to watch these guys get up and start figuring it out for good or for bad. it feel like there is still some holes that need to be filled (maybe a true 1LHD to pair with Seider or Top Six Winger) - but I would be shocked if someone of significance wasn't added in FA or Trade and this was all homegrown like this.

The drafted talent Brandsegg-Nygård was not okay draft from the start according to my first statements, but we need more wing forwards, then the Norwegian will get the chance?

You know one thing I am kind of surprised doesn't come up in Yzerman bashing threads is Jakub Vrana. If Pavel Buchelnikov does not become an NHLer we will essentially have preserved nothing from the Mantha trade which is disappointing considering how Yzerman works magic when he is forced to trade like MSL and Drouin. Yzerman also seems to meticulously mind read the players he seeks for mental fortitude. Unless Varan's personal struggles were truely unknown to anyone. I think the only thing that set the rebuild back more than losing this trade was continually losing the lottery.

If the Mantha trade had landed we might have a core peace at wing instead of placeholders like Kane and Tarasenko. And when Yzerman has a piece like Mantha to work with he usually hits a home run so its doubly painful

Ehhhh I get what you are saying. But I don't feel like it fully evaluates into the management of the Varana trade. At the time Varana was the centerpiece of that trade and at the time Yzerman is not knowing that this pick would be a part of his trade up for for the Cossa pick. I am high on Cossa I see him working out quite well but even so, getting zero value from Varana himself left a big hole.

So at the moment it's Mantha for Buchnevich, and sort of Cossa.

It is wild to me how much Yzerman lives in the heads of other teams fans. I'm sort of middling on the job he has done thus far in Detroit, and I think Wings fans have made points either side of that, but it is wild how every main board wings topic turns into an Yzerman obsession lol.

The only thing Yzerman is currently doing that I do not love is backing himself into a corner a bit with these young players. I don't think it hurts Kasper or hurt Ed (last year) to be in the AHL an extra year, but it does make managing rookie roster spots tricky. I just don't wan to see a repeat of the Holland era Backman/XO/Sproul/Marchenko mess. Prospects are assets too and you have to have room to develop them both at an AHL and NHL level.

Its one thing if a player isn't mentally ready but if intangibles are going to be qualification of who you draft then I don't think you can claim that as much as to why you hold a player back.

I think barring a disaster spots have to be available for Mazur, Danielson, and Kasper next year. Then you have MBN that the team seems to think could have been ready as early as this year at some point. If Cossa/ Augustine have strong years Cossa is going to need a shot at that backup spot and Augustine the GR starter role because he is an older guy coming out of college. Then you have Wallinder and ASP on D both of which could make a case for a spot, but I could see being slow rolled for development purposes.

There are contracts I don't love too but I don't Yzerman as not being able to grab cap space if needed.

I think his signings handicapped the team this year which stinks.

... but then look at the cap space available the next 2 years. Oodles and oodles of it.
