He was just f***ing skating the top line in practice!?
And Desleuriers was the 4th line center, just placeholders so other players would be in the same spots they will be in the game.

Numbers game, it's either Laughton or Cates as 4LW.
Cates was centering Farabee and Brink in practice during TC, so he's the fall back if Luchanko isn't ready.

Nic D is a lot closer to a 4C than Cates is to a 1C.

Seems to me like a clear case of a veteran who shouldnt be here blocking a young player.

If Laughton — given age, downward trend, window for sub-contention — can only be traded for an “offer you can’t refuse,” then they’ve lost the plot. But we know that already. Finnegan’s Wake is more sensical than the Flyers.

“I told him that I wasn't shopping him, first of all. I wasn't gonna trade him for fair value because he's more than fair value to us. The intangibles that he brings in the locker room are something that has no price, and the other teams don't see that, but we do. I told him that. I said 'We're not gonna trade you if it's just a fair trade.' Someone would have to overstep and really knock it out of the ballpark for us to consider it.”

Value doesn’t go up for 30 year old bottom 6 players in decline. It doesn’t even remain the same. The Flyers, shockingly, are really bad at evaluating markets.

That Briere statement is an all timer. It illustrates everything you need to know about how insular and arrogant their evaluation process is. In any other context, if someone tells you they're the only one who can see things other people can't...ok, crazy! Just business as usual in Flyerland

"We highly value this player, therefore everyone else will too" followed by shock at how much lower the offers are does seem to be their process. As if they think eventually someone will crack and pay what they must know is his real value! Just gotta wait it out!

That or they've never been remotely serious about moving him. Neither process is very good.

Please note that this is a positive post because I said it is a level of good, not a level of bad

I mean, he straight up said it would have to be an overpay. For Scott f***ing Laughton. From everything I've ever read, Laughton seems like a great guy. Cool. That's not someone you require some ridiculous overpay for. The guy is a career 3rd liner at best (nothing wrong with that!) and they act like they'd be giving another team the secret weapon if they ever deemed to trade him. To paraphrase the great George Lucas, "It's like a joke. It makes you laugh"

Right or wrong they see him as a glue guy.

It is wrong because they've designated half the roster as glue guys.
Mostly the bottom 6 guys on the roster. 2 of which will be forced in over better players. Brink, Frost, and others will be sat to get them in the line up. Again not saying it’s right but more why they keep this type of players.

It’s a torts thing. His system is designed to make these type of players get maximum out of.

The glue to what?
It’s a sports cliche, which I am sure you know. My belief is they saw the giroux group as not hard working. In fact I’ve been told that from someone in the org. They value try hards. Hence lappy still coaching. Torts is that way. Fletcher. Av. Even hextall.

they think the hard it looks like you working the better and more effort. Unfortunately the best players maintain their fitness and also can make things look like less effort by being ahead of the play not behind.

I get it but he’s been in the org for 13 years now when they have largely been irrelevant as a franchise (not his fault) so what exactly is he holding together?

I get the principle but if the “culture” is going to crumble without one guy, well it was never shit to begin with.

In general, the two qualities that predict a player exceeding expectations are IQ and work ethic.

The guys who get by with talent tend to peak young, then age catches up to them early. Especially if they have bad habits off the ice/field - what you can get away with at 20 can deep six you at 30.

Players who excel in any sport tend to combine talent with work ethic and a deep understanding of the game.

So they're not wrong, especially when it comes to giving out long-term contracts.
Work ethic isn't a substitute for talent, it's a complement.
