When does Zibanejad sign, and for how much?

Gorton mentioned avoiding 5, 6, 7 year deals. Unclear, though, if this policy applies to extensions.

Never read this, let anywhere, but it makes sense. At least for UFA. Regression seems to hit hard once the 30s come around and no big contracts avoid this

My guess is 6 years at $4.75m for Zib

If he's signing for 6 years, the AAV will be higher than that. 6 years includes 4 UFA years. It would be more like 5.5 per year.

Yes, Gorton said he wants to avoid long term deals, but I'm not sure that applies to a 24 year old player with 5 years of experience. A 6 year deal puts him at age 30 when it's done.

Zib is eligible to be a UFA in 2 years, so there's no way Gorton will sign him for 2 years. If they end up going to arbitration, or they sign a short term deal to avoid arbitration, it will be 1 year, but I think that is unlikely. So really, we are looking at 3+ years. My guess would be 4 or 5, but I think 6 is possible.

It would really help if Klein would just retire already, so we know we have that cap space. I don't see Holden getting traded. He's valuable depth on a cheap contract. If Klein doesn't retire, he may find himself in the AHL.

At the draft,Gorton said the Rangers are looking at a short or long term contract for Zibanejad. Short is 3 years. One year of group III.

when did he say that?

"I can only talk for us. Kevin is a player we have coveted for a while, offensive defenseman on the right side that can do so many things for you. PP, as everyone noted, is as advertised. I would say that the market is what it is. We try to stay away from those 5-6-7-8 year deals right now and figure out where the cap is going as we move forward. We felt it was an opportunity to get a really good player for a term that we could live with and felt was fair for him and fair for us. As far as other players and talking around the league and seeing what was available, I felt that was the case, it didn't seem like the 5-6-7 year deals were out there for many teams. It's interesting change in the market."

When was the last time an arbitration eligible player DIDN'T file? It's pretty much a given.

They have a lot of contracts coming off the books in 2021-22, every current contract would be gone by then. Both NHL and PA have opt out of CBA before 20-21 season

I'm not sure what their plan is but I wonder if they end Zbads contract in either of those two years just to have a clean slate of sorts. Maybe they give him some bonus money in that 20-21 season to ensure guaranteed money as an incentive to lower the cap hit. For example Shattenkirk has his highest bonus that year at 2M, and it's the only year Smith has any bonus at 1M.

Doesn't really mean much. I would be surprised if he actually went to arbitration.

Yeah, with Stepan out he becomes the #1 and both him and the Rangers know it. Just a matter of working out the details between now and his hearing. I'm not worried though...they'll get something done.

Please no bridge.

please, why is that?

seems to me that jumping past bridge contracts to long term deals is what has totally skewed to pay scale for younger players

if a 2 year bridge keeps his salary under $4.5M and his RFA rights retained, why not?

Because that's how we've lost players in the past

We will pay up the wazooo in 2 years, that's why

5 years, $4.5-5m AAV, no trade restrictions.

Unfortunately I think getting him for that cheap without a NTC/NMC is crossing into wishful thinking territory.

I would be fine throwing him a 8-12 team NTC if it meant keeping his caphit at 5m or under.

I still feel like it will be 5.5 though.

Because if Mika breaksout for 60+ point seasons in the next 2 years he will be asking for $6.5-7 on his next contract and it will be over 7 years. Not only will he get it (either from us or someone else), he will be 2 years older when the contact expires. If we lock him in now, we will be at 5 - 5.5. I would rather a 24 year old Mika locked up until he is 30/31 than signing a fresh deal with a 26/27 year old Mika whose contract won't end until 33/34.

i took that as him talking about shattenkirk specifically. not an overall stance against longer deals.

So much for that ...

The NHLPA has announced that Mika Zibanejad has filed for salary arbitration:

Negotiations with Zibanejad can continue on a new contract right up until the hearing is about to start.

Larry Brooks wrote today that Zibanejad will likely get between $4.5 million and $5.5 million depending on the length of his contract. (NY Post)

Jeff Gorton said that the Rangers are open to any sort of deal with Zibanejad.

The Rangers have not had an arbitration hearing since 2009 when they walked away from Nikolai Zherdev's award.

Doesn't mean he'll go to arbitration, as he said.
