Gorton mentioned avoiding 5, 6, 7 year deals. Unclear, though, if this policy applies to extensions.
when did he say that?

My guess is 6 years at $4.75m for Zib
when did he say that?
Never read this, let anywhere, but it makes sense. At least for UFA. Regression seems to hit hard once the 30s come around and no big contracts avoid this
Well snap.
Doesn't really mean much. I would be surprised if he actually went to arbitration.
Please no bridge.
please, why is that?
seems to me that jumping past bridge contracts to long term deals is what has totally skewed to pay scale for younger players
if a 2 year bridge keeps his salary under $4.5M and his RFA rights retained, why not?

5 years, $4.5-5m AAV, no trade restrictions.

"I can only talk for us. Kevin is a player we have coveted for a while, offensive defenseman on the right side that can do so many things for you. PP, as everyone noted, is as advertised. I would say that the market is what it is. We try to stay away from those 5-6-7-8 year deals right now and figure out where the cap is going as we move forward. We felt it was an opportunity to get a really good player for a term that we could live with and felt was fair for him and fair for us. As far as other players and talking around the league and seeing what was available, I felt that was the case, it didn't seem like the 5-6-7 year deals were out there for many teams. It's interesting change in the market."

The NHLPA has announced that Mika Zibanejad has filed for salary arbitration:
Negotiations with Zibanejad can continue on a new contract right up until the hearing is about to start.
Larry Brooks wrote today that Zibanejad will likely get between $4.5 million and $5.5 million depending on the length of his contract. (NY Post)
Jeff Gorton said that the Rangers are open to any sort of deal with Zibanejad.
The Rangers have not had an arbitration hearing since 2009 when they walked away from Nikolai Zherdev's award.

So much for that ...

Doesn't mean he'll go to arbitration, as he said.
