When does Zibanejad sign, and for how much?

The thing with Fast is, it doesn't matter what he's worth to us as posters on this board, it matters what he's worth as an NHL RFA. Who are the comparables for him? If the comparables dictate he's worth $2M then that's what he's worth regardless of how we may value him. I love Fast but I can't see him getting $2.5M, no matter how hard he works or how versatile he is. He's still a 3rd/4th line tweener and that's a lot of money for him.

Oh yea if Fast were to get 2.5M I wouldn't even sign him. I don't really even want him at 2M.

Looking at the 3 year 4.9m deal for Galchenyuk, I find it hard to believe Zib would get less than 5.5m especially since we'll definitely be giving him longer term (and therefore buying out UFA years).

Give Mika the Trocheck deal. 6 years $4.75M AAV

Trocheck signed that deal after what, 2 full years in the league? And IIRC it only bought one year of UFA. Zibs has four and a half years in the league and six years would buy out I believe three UFA years. The players may look comparable but their contract situations are not.

Front-loaded, making it easier to potentially trade later on.

I'm going with you here. This is exactly what we should do. This is what successful teams do with a player that is a mainstay. Lock him up. It's not that high of a figure that will castrate us and by front loading it.....well Kreids, you nailed it.
Something is telling me that he will be asking for 5mil per, we get him down to 4.75 for 7 years though. Still a decent contract for everyone, and better for us.

I always forget he came into the league right away. So he only has 3 years left of being a RFA? Guess you're right that something in the 5 year $5.4 range makes sense

When Brassard signed his 5x5 deal, did everyone say what a great deal? No, everyone said it's too much, two years later it was viewed as great deal. Zib will likely get 5-6 years at $5.5-5.75m, this will look high now but a very good deal within 2 seasons. This will be very fair for both sides, if they get Mike for under $5m on a long term deal I'll be shocked.

Brass had a very tradeable contract.

Rangers did the same with Step.

Money upfront and signing bonus constructs.

I expect Mika to get something along those lines with lockout protection in that year.

It'll be interesting to see if we sign him in the next few days. Now that he's filed for arbitration, we get another buyout window....

I wonder if there was a wink/nod agreement to Zib to file for arbitration to give the Rangers that window in case we need it for Staal/Klein/Holden....

Zib 4,5mill for 4 years so he is an ufa when Smith, Staal, Hank and Shatty´s contract are done. Isnt worth the risk to give him 1+ mill more to sign him for 6+ years since he can easily not be more than a 50 point center.

So is that the year we do our house cleaning? I would imagine he would get at least 2 years past that. I said 7 with my earlier post.

Look at us all playing Mr. Gorton. He's done very well not overpaying (in fact underpaying) so that's why I think he will only get 4.75 not the 5+ everyone has been saying......we soon shall see. Hope I'm right, we need the money for the next steal of a deal at the center position.......Anyone in for the Duschene sweepstakes?

Just to be fair, if you're going to pro-rate Stepan's lockout season, than you should also pro-rate this past season for ZBad b/c of injury. And if you do that, he has two straight 50+ point seasons.

Not trying to pick one side or the other in this debate, just pointing this out. Can't pro-rate one guy and not the other.

Serious question here. Everyone mentioning the pro rating et al. I get that. But when negotiating doesn't the players teammates come into account?
Hypothetically......you're playing with substandard players and still put up good numbers......

Didn't Steps have better team support than say Zbad when with Ottawa? Anyone?

I'm dumb, I understand the wink/nod......but could you please spell it all out for me. I'd appreciate it.

Teams only get a second buyout window if a player files for arbitration and they meet a certain salary threshold, IIRC.

mti79 is suggesting that Gorton has decided he wants more time to consider buying out Staal/Klein/Holden and has told Zibanejad something along the lines of "Hey, we already came to terms with a new contract for you, but we'd really like it if you did us a solid and just filed for arbitration so we can potentially buyout another player later on. We'll sign you later, have a great summer."

Most players who are arbitration eligible file for arbitration. There's no conspiracy here.

We currently have 8 dmen so even if Klein doesn't retire, we can send either him or Holden to Hartford and save 1.025 against the cap.

Gorton I'm sure is making everyone understand that this team has got to be just a little more frugal due to Dan's contractual obligation. Everyone has got to take a little less.....or bye bye. Gorton has done such a fine job, imo.

Galchenyuk has a .60 points per game average. Zibanejad has a .55 points per game average. 3 years and $4.9M covers just one year of group III. Zibanejad is a Newport Sports client. The Rangers have done many deals with them. Zibanejad missed two months with the broken leg. He would have had 54 points pro rated over 82 games. He led the team in playoff points. Scored the OT GWG against the Habs in game 5. He is 24. How much for 5 or 6 years? $5.25-$5.5M? If Zibanejad takes that next step, the contract will look like a bargain. If he remains the 50-55 point player, that's still a good contract. Big and strong right handed shooting center. Gorton said at the draft the Rangers were waiting to see the outcome of similar contract negotiations before finalizing a deal with Zibanejad. Galchenyuk signed.

Gorton mentioned avoiding 5, 6, 7 year deals. Unclear, though, if this policy applies to extensions.
