When does the Yzerplan start getting criticized?

Yeah I distinctly remember Vasielievsky, Point, Kucherov, McDonagh etc. being signed as free agents who wanted to play in Tampa at all costs.
Vasy, Point and Kucherov are all Tampa draft picks. It made it easier to get discounts on those guys along with Stamkos and Hedman. But they weren't free agents in terms of how we classically look at that. McDonagh signed his extension before actually hitting that phase after his trade too if I remember right.

So you're saying that Yzerman should've foregone putting even mildly capable NHL defensemen on the back end for sake of the rebuild, thus probably causing us to lose even more games, thus making the rebuild that much easier to criticize? You'd say the rebuild was more on track if we were worse than we are now?

No. Use the assets from cap dump trades to acquire young players that fit their timeline, like a chychrun.

Also, you could sign similar players to Chiarot for a fraction of the cap hit.

Again, why didn’t he do the Monahan trade? That was a phenomenal trade by MTL, and he, when healthy, is a similar player, probably a bit worse than Copp. And you get assets for taking him on. And it’s only one year vs 6 or whatever Copp got.

Same thing with Gostisbere. Different player than Chiarot but similar effectiveness.

The rebuild isn't going to happen overnight when you get the lottery luck that Detroit has, and that's out of his control. They are still trending in a solid direction. Not sure why he would come in for criticism.

Until the core is mature and shows itself to be not good enough, you can't really consider the rebuild a failure.

Where were they supposed to get these top high end offensive talents since he took over in 2019?

How do we know hes not going to do this with his three 1st round picks and four 2nd round picks in the next two drafts?

They already have a top 3 prospect pool. Some prospects and picks will be moved.

Ok? There is no artificial limit on first round picks. Acquire more. Again, why didn’t he do the Monahan trade instead of signing Copp?

Copp was signed to a 4 year deal, not 6. No need to spin things to make it seem worse. He's having the best season of his career and can play anywhere in the lineup at a very reasonable cap hit.

What would one year of a constantly injured Monahan have done for the Wings? They acquired multiple first round picks at the most recent deadline just a few weeks ago.

It's just a weird criticism about him not getting Monahan, do you criticize every other team in the league for also not getting him? Also wasn't the pick they got for Monahan a conditional 2025 pick? How does that speed up the rebuild?

The team and the roster have seemingly spun their wheels (pun intended) for a bit now.

Have you already criticized it?

Or is making the playoffs next season critical?

Or does Yzerman have a longer leash due to his reputation?
He is still cleaning up Holland mess. Getting rid of all the bad picks and bad characters Holland draft. Isnt there a fire Holland thread on the oiler board from all the mayhem is has cuased? I know he is getting a grace period now--but they look to be knocked out in the first round by LA right now

Wtf are you on about? What do you know about the trade discussions between the teams that didn't get Ghost or Monahan? Hell of a sharpshooting you're doing here, Tex.

They still look at least 4 years away from doing anything. Gotta wonder how long the Wings owners let this go on before making change.
It takes longer than 4 years to turn a franchise around. It usually takes 2 years just to purge the dead weight you inherited, and that's without any immovable contracts. It sucks for fans though.

That's an awful lot of hindsight. The Monahan trade is a trade that only a team hoping to lose 82 games makes. Yzerman isn't trying to lose. I'm not sold on Chycrun fitting with Detroit's timeline either.

Your argument is ridiculous. The Wings have taken on several contracts the past couple years. No team will ever be the only team willing to take on cap dumps.

I wouldn't read too much into that. There's people in the Oilers fanbase who would fire their grandmother if it meant they could have won a game they lost. Holland has been pretty good in Edmonton, aside from choosing Jack "ECHL" Campbell to be our goalie.

Detroit has had some terrible luck with the lottery. That's really what it comes down to. People assume that when their team bottoms out they'll get a 1st or 2nd overall pick and grab that next franchise player that the team can build around but it doesn't always work out that way. I think Yzerman has done pretty well with the picks he's had but the reality is it's extremely difficult to build a contender without the top end talent that can really only be had through the top of the draft. Unless he finds another Datsyuk or Zetterberg in the later rounds Yzerman is going to have a tough time building a real contender any time soon.

It’s still too early to evaluate his drafting. Thr key is if you can get players outside the top 20 in the draft. a key is if you can get secondary players drafted and produce along with the high picks.

if you just rely on picking high then it can take longer which is why you have a delayed effect with teams like Colorado, Edmonton, and Tampa from their first rebuilding draft.

the few years before he took over they didn’t do all that well in the draft.

I think what Detroit did innUFA this year could have hurt the club keeping thrm out of top 10 unless they can win the lottery.

Yes, with a seriously long injury list.

Yes, because that has worked out well for the Oilers

Or is all forgotten now because he made the Ekholm trade?
Yea this is consistently forgotten when discussing the Wing's current state of affairs. I think with the inclusion of Fabbri, Bertuzzi, and Vrana for a lengthier period of time, this season would be looking far different. That team may just have inched its way into a playoff spot

So if they just had a conditional 2025 1st round pick you would think the rebuild is going perfectly? A draft pick that in a perfect scenario impacts the roster 3-4 years from now?

The main thing I disagree with is signing a bunch of guys this past offseason. 2-3 weeks of looking like they might be able to make a playoff push certainly wasn't worth it, especially as it brutally lowers the chance of getting Bedard.

I think they possibly may have blinked and fast forwarded the original plan because of how well Raymond and Seider did last year. It could be a very costly mistake in that getting an elite franchise forward might prove to be an elusive thing. And you can't conclude the build without one. If Yzerman pretends Larkin is it, then he'll get fired a couple years down the line because the team will be stuck in mediocre limbo.

That would still be a a lot shorter than the Oilers rebuild

It should be noted is that most people in here criticizing are fans of some of the worst run teams in the NHL. It's a thread from the perspective of projecting.

The thread can be summed up with

Interesting deflection.

Oilers/Buffalo tire fire decade of darkness rebuilds doesn't mean Yzerman also gets a decade before he can be called out. I'm sure there is a middle ground between a really good rebuild and the worst rebuilds of all time, where you might say, we need some result soon.

Have you seen your teams standings since you last made the playoffs like 6 years ago?
The Hawks are where the Wings were three years ago, although Wings technically bottomed out even harder.

lol maybe they should be more like the Hawks and go after terrible trades, bad drafting and awful signings.
mighty defensive aren't we? lol. Do you work for the Red Wings front office, it wasn't a personal attack..

Lol maybe listen to Yzerman himself if you want an idea of direction of the team. He said before the year started they aren't close. Funny how it's Edmonton fans or Tampa fans mostly that have an issue with Yzermans "reputation". Both teams that built what they have with multiple top picks. Edmonton is especially laughable considering they haven't actually accomplished anything with their lottery luck.
