Massively interested - there’s been worse teams.
Seems an odd time to give up or lessen interest.
I agree-I have been bleeding for 60 years now, couldn't not watch my beloved Leafs.
However, I like to think I'm a realist, with a little bit of knowledge and insight, and I played the game until a goon messed me up.
While I gasp at the talent, rising out of my chair at the latest Matthews-Marner-Nylander magic, I find myself musing now (sadly) that there is something rotten at the core. One image has stayed with me from the Montreal debacle; Matthews laughing openly at the rough treatment Ben Chiarot was giving him behind the Hab's net after play stopped-not just a smirk but openly laughing! And not a teammate to the rescue! Don Cherry commented about this too on a recent podcast ( whom I do believe has some unique insight despite questionable antics), his comment was to the effect that on his team someone would have taken care of Chiarot real quick ( quite what you'd expect from Cherry), but he also touched on what I think is the bigger issue- the open derision Matthews displayed ( look, here I am a 23 year old superstar making 11 million a year, a Rocket Richard award winner, and how laughable that I have to tolerate this grunt-how pedestrian!).
Would Nathan Mackinnon behave this way? Connor McDavid? If I were one of the several 1 Million worker-bees on the Leafs-would I go to war, go into the trenches for this behavior? And what of Marner? Someone whose Father openly publicly maintained he should be paid like Matthews. Would I jump the Chiarot's of the league for those two? I would for Nathan Mackinnon who promises to take a discount for the good of the team. I would for Sydney Crosby etc.
I feel horrible hinting at this, but does this team really lack a 'go to war together' mentality, a willingness to pay any price for the good of the team? Or is it a collection of individuals, where the two most visible were handed the 'keys to the city' long before they had earned it? Was Cherry's comment that Matthews didn't really seem to care ( after watching his exit interview) accurate? Maybe there is clairvoyance to the oft cited stat that no team in the cap era has ever won a playoff round with a player on its roster making 10 Million or more ( let alone 3). What is the dressing room really like when there are the Royal 4 (Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander) and then the rest of them, how can that work for team cohesian?
Has Dubas fatally flawed the team with his largesse? Matthews a free agent at 26 ( and to rub salt in the wound-a no trade clause in the final year). Mitch Marner with a six year contract averaging 10.893M ( and the final two years with a no movement clause) while David Pastrnak took a team friendly 6 year deal at $6,666,666? Mikko Rantanen at 9.250 Million for 6 years. Brad Marchant at 6.125 Million? John Tavares at 11 million?
I hope I'm wrong, I hope Dubas doesn't just end up 'shuffling the chairs on the Titanic' for another year
