The problem with Russia, is it's all about politics, and no logic. Canada acknowledges their best players, i.e., making Crosby Captain. Russia should've made their best player Ovechkin Captain by now. Instead they give it to guys like Kovalchuk.

I'm from Russia. I want to apologize for our team. I, and many Russian people are ashamed of what they have left the ice early.
:(

That ceremony went on FOREEEEEVER. As a Canadian, I felt really bad for the Russians. They were basically made to stand there and wait for 20 minutes before even getting to the hand shake line. Literally just standing there watching. Then they finally get their medals, do their handshake, and they're then meant to stand there for ANOTHER 20 minutes while they announce this or that prize? Then Canada gets their trophy and they skate around with it, passing it to each other and skating around and all the while, Russia is meant to just stand there again?

To me that was the problem. I don't recall if it was the same situation in previous years, but that's just insulting to the opposing team. In the NHL, you celebrate, you shake hands, and then the other team is free to go. Boom. Done.

That whole ceremony was horribly organized, and I don't blame Russia at all for just saying, "alright that's enough, let's go be sad in the privacy of our dressing room".

Ovechkin is not the captain, because it was not known, he will be able to come to the game or not.

The title of this thread is "What is Wrong With Russia?" I thought there would be all kinds of interesting answers to the question, but I never would have guessed that it would all come down to "Russia doesn't stay around for medal ceremonies." If that's the only problem, then its easy to fix!

Russia is definetely able to play more equal game with Canada even with worse defence. I just doubt they were completely prepared and ready for this game....Canada's discipline and team work was never russian's strong point.....

We did not win the gold - it does not matter. We have silver. The main problem is that you again have a reason to think badly about Russia. :(

Russian hockey experts acknowledge a weak play defense, but explain injuries players.

Ovechkin came to Czech Republic less than two days after losing in game 7 against the Rangers. It was not known whether or not he would be able to make it in time for the semifinal games. Kovalchuk was with the team since the beginning, that's way they named him captain.

In Sochi last year, they had Datsyuk as the captain, Ovechkin and Kovalchuk wearing the "A".

From now on, they should have Ovechkin as a captain (when Datsyuk retires), or even appoint Tarasenko as captain.

Personally I don't care if the Russians left early. They skated over and shook hands with the Canadian players after they received their silver medals. No need for them to stay IMO, the only reason is tradition. The second place team should get their medals and give a wave to the crowd and then leave the ice/playing field. No need for them to stick around for a celebration.

Haha I actually was thinking the same thing as it was happening. And as a Canadian thinking the Canadian celebrations were way too long I have that much more respect for the Russians (Ovie, Malkin, Tarasenko, etc) that did stay on for the duration.

Somebody over there please thank Kovalchuk for burning his Come Back to the NHL card. I couldn't stomach seeing that self-centered goof in the NHL again.

As far as hockey is concerned, I echo many of the other statements in that coaching is awful and there are some strange politics in their hockey program that are easy to fix. The other obvious issue is the number of quality Defensemen and to an extent their Centers. These problems will be need to be fixed at the grassroots level if Russia is going to win senior tournaments when Canada, the USA and Sweden have their A teams. Russia can win the World Championships with what they have and the dedication of their elite players coming to play.

I agree, it's like if you really like a girl but she's dating another guy, and they're both at the same party as you. That's fine, tip your cap and go to another room and try and move on. You shouldn't have to sit and watch the happy couple make-out for a half an hour while you wallow in your defeat.

I agree.

Agreed. Russia got Silver, that's better than every other Country!

This thread is going nowhere! :shakehead

I don't think there was any intended disrespect by the Russians, but much like their game in the finals, it was down to disorganization and lack of coherent leadership - They didn't know they were expected to stay.

:(

there was quite a bit confusion quite a few of the NHL players seemed to want to stay as they knew it was the right thing to do.
they realized that a few players would be just as bad as no players.
Kovi will never captain a team again or play in the NHL.
the coach should never be behind a bench again he was a total failure.

Womens Russia team

Even more surprising about Russia is how come they do not have a good Women's Hockey Team???

Seriously, hockey is big in Russia and there is what, a trillion people living there, how come they don't have a good team? :amazed:

This is why I mention Russia will have to go back to grass roots Hockey!

players such as Plekanic and Ovie that had to fly over losing a nights sleep are really useless to their teams.

sums it up nicely. we kicked their butts. let them get their medals, shake hands and call it a night. no need for any team to stick around while we celebrate.

I'm really pissed about the snub. These guys taunt us when they beat us or when they score and we don't do it to them. When they win they rub it in, when we win the leave before its time. It's classless.

Canada is just better, plain an simple. Say what you want but it's true.

Russia needs to produce D.

Russia lacks mobility and transition on their back end. They don't have the D to support their forwards. You basically need six Lidstroms on your blue line to compete internationally these days.

Voynov and Kulikov come to mind, but they're not comparable to the guys Sweden and Canada have on their blue line.

well, culturally entrenched sexism is a thing.

Woman's hockey programs are much better funded in Canada and USA and the results show.

A huge problem is all this WC success has bred false confidence.

Do Russians fancy themselves contenders to Canada? It isn't close at all. Russia does not have a top 3 hockey problem. Perhaps not even a top 4.
