ok!! i stand corrected!! like i said, its the impression i am left with. No hard feelings, really!!

As for the technical part, im not sure how come Russia (and the Soviets) were able to spawn fantastic, world-class defensemen in the past, and now, all of a sudden, have much less to show for.
How do you go from Fetisov, Konstantinov, Gonchar, Zubov (can you tell im a 90's kid? =P) and all those greats to what Russia rostered in this WHC? What happened here???

Less expectations, yes, perhaps. More work? Maybe. Fun? I suppose its not fun to lose in such a way. Regardless, Russia will always be an exciting team to watch. They just ooze talent. Would be nice if it was channeled the right way!

cheers!

Instead of packing their bags for NA at age 17, guys like Fetisov, Vasiliev, Kasatonov, etc., stayed at home and participated in intensive, exhaustive training and development programs. After the USSR, those same development programs don't exist any more, and if they did, no one would be in them, because they all want to make a fast buck in NA yesterday.

Two books actually...' How to play better Hockey' and 'The Hockey Handbook' ( aka Tarasov's Bible ), both by Lloyd Percival...though many , on both sides of the Atlantic , are STILL loathe to admit it :shakehead

Please don't start that crap again from an unattributed Wikipedia article. Russian hockey, for better or for worse, was developed by Russians. Percival was an exercise guru, like a yogi master or a zumba dance instructor.

can anyone post a link of a video of what happened after the game?

This is a terrible job by Russia. I want to point something out that I know many have alrady said in this thread, but good on Ovie for staying out there. The hate that man gets is unfathomable to me. He is the best goal scorer since Gretzky and he really seems like a good guy. I am really glad he stayed out there. I know there were others who stayed out there as well, but Ovie in particular takes way too much criticism.

My estimation of him has grown the last couple of years. If Russia were to take their cues from him, instead of kovalchuk and others, they'd be much better off.

Hockey wise, nothing is 'wrong' with Russia. They simply aren't in the same class as Canada. Getting to the final was ambitious for them, there were more worthy teams at this tournament.

Russia is a top 6 hockey country, nothing more. Getting silver was a good accomplishment for them, they should be thrilled.

There is nothing wrong with Russia losing to the most talented squad Canada has ever sent to the Worlds.

In past years when Canada lost I was disappointed however this has never been a best versus best tournament.

I wish all the Russian fans the best and look forward to our next match.

Not in that particular instance. Canada manhandled the U.S.

we hardly "manhandled" the US. Shots were 36-31 in favor of Canada but the US was in it till the end. Plus in 2010 they were an OT goal away from stealing the gold on Canadian soil.

This is a fun example of just eyeballing stats.

The U.S. was completely shut down by Canada in the 2014 Olympics. It was no contest.

any evidence for this ridiculous statement?

oh wow, how terrible! just awful! absolutely disgusting! maybe they should slash some ankles instead, canadians like doing that apparently, now that's real sportsmanship

Wow - going back 40+ years - that's quite a reach. Try and stay in the same century with us.

Someone asked for a link, and I provided. Do you have anything relevant to add???

The Americans were effectively humiliated in the 1-0 loss to Canada in the Olympics (and then ACTUALLY humiliated in the bronze game vs. Finland), is there a severe problem with the state of hockey in America?

Tut tutt, the Americans almost potted a couple in the first few minutes vs Canada, Kessel, if memory serves, had the best chance...

Anyway, I'm done talking to a Brick Wall...I knew no Russians would listen...Some things Never Change...

Q: What's Wrong with Russia?

A: Nothing AT ALL....KEEP ON DOING WHAT UR DOING :handclap:

the defense isn't good enough.

the team plays with passion but its blind, one-dimensional skill, you don't beat a team like Canada with that.

Provorov and Zadorov are tracking well so there's hope for the blue line, but i feel there needs to be a change in how they develop these young men.

Put that together with the way some Russian hockey players act, not all but some, and you get an undisciplined team that lacks a 2 way game.

Get off ur high horse...I didn't bring it up, merely responded to another person's post...Documented Fact: Tarasov was given a copy of ' How to play Better Hockey ' in 1951...He had 500 copies of ' The Hockey Handbook ' shipped to Russia in 1955, the same book he called ' The Bible' and the same book he wrote the intro for, when it was subsequently translated into Russian...Tarasov also , reporedly, visited Percival on his death bed, and wrote a glowing handwritten tribute to his friend and mentor on the inside cover of one of his books

If you take the time to actually read Percival books , you see just how much of the Soviet tactics and training method ... inclusive of Tretiak's bouncing a tennis ball off wall to improve his hand-eye coordination / reflexes ( first suggested to Terry Sawchuk by Percival ) came straight outa the Hockey handbook...

Some don't wanna give credit where credit is due....just like some don't wanna stick around for their opponents anthem...No Worries...

KEEP ON DOING WHAT UR DOING...Not a thing wrong with CCCP HOCKEY... except that it's no longer 1970 :sarcasm:

Ovi/Malkin and a few others stuck around. Ovi is quickly becoming one of my favourite players - great guy, great player.

Sounds like it was kovalchuk who waved everyone off the ice. Everyone is responsible for their own actions but under the circumstances I can see how other players would be impressionable and follow their captains wishes. kovalchuk is a ******* and I hope they never allow him to play in the NHL again. Good on Ovi and the rest for sticking around.

There was a documentary on the Canadian program of excellence(Junior Development) and it said that Canada learned a lot from the Russians and implemented 'their skill game' into Canada's hard nose grind game. Basically what it is saying that star Canadian players are both hardworking and ultra talented, whereas the Russians never really adapted beyond a few players.
