What's up with Cole Caufield?

That roster performed way better, as the results indicate. That is the bottom line.
The quote was indicating that Caufield is having a bad year because he's on a bad roster. That roster was worse, that is quite literally the bottom line of that point.

It's unlikely he'll be sent to AHL for another year or two .He might get sent back to Laval at some point this season but even that is unlikely.

If Laval is likely making the playoffs I would expect him to be on the clear day roster. I'm no Habs fan but it's only logical.

who knows
To continue with the Cannalleri comparison, he also played about half/half in each of his first two seasons, played his 3rd season all in the AHL amd by his 4th pro season he was having a real impact in the NHL

A lot of small players take 3-5 year before making an impact, Debrincat being kind of the exception but then again Caufield doesnt have Patrick Kane on his line
Its to early to compare Caufield to anyone as an NHL player .
He might get sent to Laval to finish this season but could remain with the Montreal Canadiens .

Montreal Canadiens might send Caufield to Laval or management might decide he should remain with the Montreal Canadiens.

1 goal in 29 games. Don't think anyone saw this coming.

You can make a thread for just about every habs player.

Caufield is one of the extreme underachivers, but there is also Petry in that category, who has been a perennial 40 plus point guy. He has like 4 points this year.

When I see so many guys have down years on the same club, I usually come to the conclusion that this is more of a team issue than an individual issue.

I can't see any way that ducharme will be coaching this club beyond this season.

Who would have thought that Jesperi Kotkaniemi would be the straw that stirred the Canadiens drink? He leaves; Weber gets hurt, Price has a meltdown, Caufield stops scoring, Bergevin quits, team regresses back to the mean.
If that's the argument you're trying to make, you should be looking at this guy:

Who would have guessed that a small, one-dimensional winger would have trouble adapting to the NHL? Shocking, really.

Great young player but was definitely overhyped IMO

He's obviously very snake bitten in this sophomore slump, he will bounce back & get a lot better.

I was guilty of over hyping him I guess. I predicted a 25 goal season this year. I don't agree with the arguments that he's just being game-planned now and not flying under the radar. He was certainly being game-planned in the playoffs and was one of our best wingers.

I think it's a bit of both overhype from fans as well as it's genuinely strange he can't seem to score so far.

I still believe in a 30+ goal potential, but it's far from a sure thing and I find this season genuinely troubling. I'm tempted to blame a lot of it on just how bad the team is, but I'd like him to show he can drive the play more on his own.

He can still realize top 6 potential but he could also go the way of Jake DeBrusk.

There are people that think Caufield is being "game-planned"?

I think it might be too early to be predicting doom with CC. He is obviously a very talented kid, but his size will mean that he has some learning to do in order to showcase his strengths in the NHL. Just like with all fan bases on here there was a little hyperbole about how good he was going to be, but is being excited about your team a bad thing? Like all young players, there's always the chance he could under deliver as an NHL player, but I think the odds are higher that he will develop his game and be a top 6 winger by the time he's 22-23. Having his skill set in the NHL makes the league better, I hope he puts it all together and does become a 40 goal scorer - and I'm definitely not a Habs fan.

Calm down buddy, team ain't good this year but all of them were contributors on a team that made it to the finals last year. That's a lot better then most teams for one. You feel for young millionaires playing in the nhl!? interesting... Any team would've want to lock up Suzuki long term after the playoffs he had.
You have your opinion ....I have mine.
Petry 6. 3 million a year for 3 more years. Ha!
Toffoli , Anderson , Armia, Gallagher, Allen, Drouin , Price, Suzuki , Still paying Alzner to not play .
That's over 50 million right there. 15 of it on two goalies. Ha !

It is whyvthe team is in last. That is one sorry ass core. Its shy Bergevin is gone , it's why no one cares the team is in last because they understand what a mess MB put the franchise in.
Its like " don't worry about having the worst season in franchise history Gorton. We know you inherited a shit show. Take all the time you need"

That excuse might hold up if he wasn't getting shots or just had a little dip, but we're talking about shooting at less than 2% for a guy who was sold as a player who could shoot the puck. 70 shots w/nearly 20 on the powerplay. At some point it's no longer just the line up. It certainly should play into struggling for scoring production but there's more to it than that.
Perimeter player. Not catching any teams by surprise now.

He's Conor garland without the compete level. A skilled, but timid midget. The kid clearly isn't ready from a physical maturity standpoint, and he doesn't have the mental toughness to hang with the big boys in his current state. He needs to marinate for a few years as he gets stronger and learns the finer details of the pro game. It isn't just a down year, he has absolutely bottomed out and needs protection from utterly destroying his confidence. Shame on Montreal management for allowing this.
Bergevin and his coaching staff have been doing this to young prospects since the day he took over the team.
Gorton will correct that.
Best thing that could happen to Caufield. Trade to Tbay , Detroit or Colorado.....marinate in minors and develope in a professional manner.
Get out of the tire fire that is the Habs for next three years minimum

I think Bergevin drilled this team into the ground for years, knowing somebody else would eventually have to clean up the mess. But then he kept not getting fired. So he kept right on making a bigger and bigger mess

...he is actually exactly the kind of project we take on. Hang onto him a few more years for us. Until his value is nil. Lol
