What's Treliving first deal going to be?

To be clear I'm not counting contract extensions. I'm talking about trades and UFA signings.

I think we see some BIG changes on defense, I think there is a deal with Calgary that will see either Tanev, Andersson Hanifin or perhaps Wegar land in Toronto, I acknowledge Wegar would be tough because of the money but Treliving brought him to Calgary that's his guy so it's possible.

I also wonder about Connor Murphy in Chicago.

In free agency I he targets Carson Soucy, and he should Soucy, Matt Dumba because he's targeted him before, or Brian Doumulin.

I think we see atleast 2 D men brought in.

Up front I wonder if he targets Alex Killorn, reason being is Treliving likes the gritty skilled forwards, case in point Blake Coleman.

I think Killorn has 3 years left in him.

The problem is I think he gets 5 years.

I could be convinced to go to 4 years knowing the last year is probably going to be rough.

I have to admit I wouldn't hate it.

I also wonder about Max Domi, Dubas didn't seem interested but Treliving might be.

He needs to replace ROR to so I wonder about J Staal or the health of Towes.

I think big changes are coming.

For those that want a retool, I think you will get it.

If the contract extension talks go poorly with Nylander, I would guess him.

If not, I imagine we will move out a defenseman and bring in someone with a different blend. By all accounts, it sounds like our defense is going to get priority.

I really like Brodie but I wonder if he is the guy we move to change up the mix. Most significant piece with a decent prize tag that we reasonably move. That is under the assumption that Rielly isn’t moving.

Being that he made 1 minor deal in his first 7 months with Calgary, he'll use a draft pick to add a moderately priced 3rd line forward who fits his vision for how the team should play.

Edit: Does he have draft picks to spare?

The leafs actually have cap space this off season. However they need to fill out the bottom six in the lineup and decide what they want to do with Matthews if he asks for a ridiculous amount of AAV $ in an extension. The goaltending is another issue. There’s no guarantee that Samsonov returns and they need to rid themselves of Murray and his bloated contract.

Dubas left this team in a mess.

Resigning Schenn, Kampf and Accarri should be priorities.

Trading Matthews could become a priority if they are far apart in negotiations.

I think we only have 3 picks this year

I don’t see huge changes coming on defence.

Why? Because they have mediocre players with term left on their contracts who have little to negative trade value. Upgrading might cost draft picks and prospects and that’s one thing the leafs don’t have in abundance.

They desperately need another puck moving offensive D to take some pressure off Rielly and work the PP2 unit. I don’t think Gustafson or Connor Timmins is the answer.

I could see Treliving going after Kylington in Calgary.

Hockey's Mecca
Domi and Severson are guys that may only get overpaid by about 500k, even on the open market, and they both seem like Trev-type targets. All of the other top UFAs on the market will likely be overpaid by about 1M or more per year.

That being said, guys like Scott Mayfield and Ian Cole are definitely that types of dmen I could see Treliving overpaying in FA. Treliving could also overpay for one of the top middle 6 Cs like Compher/ROR/Evan Rodrigues considering the massive holes the team has down the middle.

I could also see Bunting being brought back at this point considering he is the type of forward that Treliving likes to target in FA, and he's already played for the team for a couple of seasons so in Trev's mind there would be way less uncertainty with him.

From what he’s said so far I think the biggest changes will be on the blueline.

Leafs don’t have a lot of assets to move so maybe he goes to the free agent market for a guy like Orlov.

Upfront I would love McBain, Connor Brown on a prove it deal, and a guy like Barbashev. Based on his comments I think those guys really fit what he’s looking for.

Knies-Matthews-Nylander
Barbashev-Tavares-Marner
Robertson-McBain-Brown
Lafferty-Jarnkrok-Acciari

Rielly-Schenn
Orlov-Brodie
McCabe-Liljegren

Samsonov

Your Worst Nightmare
June
- His very first moves would be re-signing Schenn and Acciari. They seem relatively straight forward and they would build a positive vibe within the fanbase.
- He also has to decide what to do with ROR, whether that be sign him, trade him or simply letting him walk in FA.
- He has to qualify his RFA's. I imagine everyone except Kral and Mete will be brought back.
- Trade Brodie at the draft before his 10 team NTC kicks in for a good but not over the top return to remake the defense.
- Try to get an extra pick in the draft, by trading down, or another method.
- Begin serious negotiations with Matthews and Nylander.

July
- Sign Matthews to basically whatever he wants within reason.
- Trade Nylander with an extension for an insane profit.
- Make the team heavier in FA. (Barbashev, Bertuzzi, Killorn and Mayfield all top targets)
- Figure out what to do with Sheldon Keefe. There are replacements on the board. Is now the time or will he keep that bullet in the chamber?

I don't think Lilly will be here, or Timmins, they are Dubas guys and I think they are out, I wonder about Samsonov for that same reason.

I think Treliving wants a Defense that's big and nasty, and that's not Lilly and that's not Timmins.
