Went through a list of LH defenseman who could be available from non-playoff teams, and then ranked them based on who I think the best fit would be based on team fit/ability/term/acquisition cost.

Hampus Lindholm(UFA)
Jakob Chychrun
Vladislav Gavrikov
Ivan Provorov
Travis Sanheim
Mark Giordano(UFA)
Calvin de Haan(UFA)
Carson Soucy
Ryan Graves
Zdeno Chara(UFA)
Ben Chiarot(UFA)
Brenden Dillon
Nick Leddy(UFA)

Chara should be lower, but his cap hit/acquisition cost wouldn’t hold us back from getting 2 players on this list, and using him as a third pair/depth guy.
Good list.

The top 4 are the guys who I'd think, "Ok, Armstrong has addressed this problem in a substantial and serious way." But two of them are not thought to be available.

The next two would be "I hope this works out and it's better than no move." One of them is not thought to be available.

Everyone else, I would assume Blues win either 0 or 1 playoff round and the problem remains a problem.

I will actually throw up if Army gets Chara. His underlying numbers are dreadful. A hysterical one that sticks out to me is 5 takeaways to 32 giveaways on the year. At this stage in his career he's not better than Mikkola, who I'm not particularly high on either. Chara would bring experience, but half the guys on the team have won a Cup, so I don't view that as being particularly valuable to this group. It doesn't really seem like an Army move, and I hope he doesn't make it. I would still rather trade for Chara than Chiarot, though because they are equally bad, but Chiarot will cost more. The guy was the weakest link in Montreal last year and now they're touting him as a top 4 dman. Total BS.

This was posted on the Chara trade thread-

“His offense is gone, but his defense isnt.

His 1.9 ESGA/60 is better than anyone on Toronto, and is 3.7 PKGA/60 is better than anyone with more than 1 min PK TOI on Toronto.

His ESGA/60 is better than the likes of Fox, Makar, McAvoy, Hedman, Josi

His 2.5 defensive point shares are behind only Rielly and Brodie. His 56 blocks are good for 3rd, and 89 hits would be #1

Point being, he's still a valuable defensive specialist for any contender.”

I could see him as the “Leopold” type acquisition, where we still get our “JBo” to fix the top pair.

In this scenario, I really wouldn’t be against these pairings

TBA-Parayko
Krug-Faulk
Chara-Mikkola
Bortuzzo

We can swap him and Bortuzzo depending on if he needs rest, or if he struggles against some of the faster teams in the West.

We could use his feistiness in general, and you can’t go wrong with bringing in a HoF’er in for a Cup run. Plus, Boston fans would hate it :laugh:

Three years ago Chara would have made sense. But, he is not better than Scandella or Mikkola. And I don't see the point of demoting Bortuzzo to riding pine when any upgrades that Chara would be marginal at best. He has no legs and he has no offense. And I wouldn't give anything to pick him up he's just not worth it anymore.

I doubt that's who they would want. I'd think they would want picks and younger guys, who are further away from free agency. I could see them wanting Pereunovich and Neighbours, plus picks.

It was a rhetrical question.

Did you think anyone here actually wants to move Kyrou or Thomas ?

I don’t know what Armstrong will do, but I see Perunovich as currency. I can’t see a way to fit him on this roster going forward. Maybe this was part of the thought process in deciding to call him up this year after his AHL start.

I can’t get a feel for what the market is really offering for Chychrun, or will offer. I’d do Perunovich and a 1st plus Scandella. Maybe you can take Chara for future considerations or something trivial if you do that. But it would be Mikkola who ended up playing in that case.

He’s too soft for me.
What are you trying to be defensively? If you're trying to turn the clock back to Spring 2019, you're looking to replace the defending skills of either Petro or JBo. Sanheim certainly isn't softer than either of them.

Sanheim is basically a younger, slightly smaller version of JBo who can fit seamlessly into the defensive strategy of defending through positioning, leverage, stickwork and transition. He can skate the puck out of the D zone or he can make an outlet pass. He's not going to chase big hits and leave the home plate area open. So, again, I ask - what is it that you're looking for?

I know next to nothing about Sanheim, but based on your description it sounds like he'd fit the bill perfectly. I want the Blues to acquire the best pure defender that's available, whoever that may be.

I don’t think his defending is nearly as good as petro or JBo. I could be wrong, but this is what I’ve seen.

Nobody with a level head thinks any team with one of the players we're discussing would even ask for Thomas or Kyrou. It's not a thing another team would do. Thinking about the topic is a pure waste of time.

How about a guy like Shayne Gostisbehere for AZ? How is his Defensive game? Does he even play the LD side. It would definitely be a offensive upgrade over scandella just not sure how much on the Defensive side?

Not for me, thanks. Way too soft and suspect defensively. We have enough one-dimensional defensemen.

I like the Sanheim idea myself he is young. Salary is 4.7 mill per year. So maybe we package Scandella, 2nd, Kostin. I am not sure that fits cap wise

Did people give up on Perunovich? Doesn't he have a big offensive and PP upside?

We need help this year and Perunovich is a few years away from being a difference maker in the NHL.
