The economic struggles would have hit Soviet hockey hard through the 1990s even if the USSR would somehow have managed to stay intact. Selling young players to the West would still have been a way for top programs to stay afloat. Economic development in the 2000s could have been somewhat similar to what factually took place in Russia.

Putin is here to stay for a decade at least and then there will be a hand-picked successor. It's a bit too early to ask this question. In couple of decades it could be raised again. Well, at least the creator/captain of the putin team keeps beating records. Go Russia!

With what money?
I mean, European nations are still sending billions of dollars to Russian oil and gas companies, in exchange for natural gas and petroleum, so...yeah. Unless nations are willing to get serious about boycotting Russian oil exports (and nations like China and India have shown zero interest), there would likely be money to keep the KHL going.

That might be coming to a stop as well. Plus that money is going to other more pressing areas than hockey.

If you say so. I am not so convinced.

There are a lot of nations around the world that would be more than happy to buy up cheaper Russian resouces while western countries boycott them (if the west can even get their shit together and agree on a serious boycott). Don't hear a lot of calls for a boycott coming from China, India, Middle East, Africa, ect...
