Not sure about 1999, but the US absolutely should have been banned in 2003 and again in 2017-20.
we never left that theater sport. Are you saying you were for a sadistic dictator like Saddam Hussein who actually gassed his own people? And your second point is patently absurd

Nazi Germany was, but that regime was destroyed & replaced by modern Germany. They are not the same.
States go through changes all the time. However, the structures and populace’s remained. The Russian invasion of Ukraine pails in comparison to what the Germans did. They (the state and German people) tried to eliminate entire populations from Europe (Jewish, Slavs, disabled peoples). They were lucky to remain as a state after their defeat, not even mentioning sport

Russia is currently trying to eliminate Ukraine and threatens the rest of the world with nuclear war. There's absolutely no desire, need, or reason to include these "structures" in international hockey again. Not now and not in the future. Russia will have to go through fundamental changes just like Germany did if it ever wants to be a part of the international community again.

What kind of stupid shit is this? Was the US banned from major sports in 1999 or 2003? For invasions that most world countries condemned ?

Why do the athletes have to suffer for the actions of politicians?
If you cannot see the difference that's on you.

IIHF has recently edited many tournaments in regard to loss of Russia and Belarus. But what will they do, after this two national teams could come back? This is still unknown.

What should they do?

Will there be a WCH with 18 teams? Temporarily or full time?

What to do with WCH U20 2022/2023?

Btw. Russia has still WCH for year 2023.

Earliest after 5-10 years from now they should start from the first division aka second best division. No need to put them lower than that as they will just win every game easily otherwise and they would just disturb the competition even more there, which would be unnecessary. The second best division should have more teams than usual. No need to expand the amount of teams in the best division.

I will be very mad if Russia (ROC) doesn't have to skip the next Olympics as Putin has started many of his recent wars around the times when Olympics have been held. So let Russia skip 1-2 Olympiads/Olympic cycles as a penalty. Lift the sanctions right after some Olympics have been held. Let's not forget that they have systematic goverment lead doping programs as well. They have done enough harm for sports.

Same thing with junior teams. Each team starts from 1 league lower than they used to be.

At the very least they should not start any higher than Ukraine after destroying among more important things also much of the hockey infrastructure in that country.

Pretty good way to look at it. I like it.

Consider how many years they will be out, then put them that amount of levels down.

Russia vs Kuwait & Malaysia. 30-0 each game. I wonder if some of those players could even skate properly. There would be 0 professional players in those teams most likely.

We could have an hours long discussion on the level of culpability between the German people & the Nazi party, but it doesn’t change anything. Putin is evil & is doing evil things in Ukraine. Russia has to be punished for this illegal & immoral invasion to affect positive change. If that means they go a decade or more without international hockey involvement, then so be it.

I know they definitely shouldn’t be rewarded by any means but whenever they are allowed to come back it would just be stupid to have Russia in the lower division the games would just be blowouts and they’d be back at the top the next year anyway. It would take away the tournament from the other nations participating in that division IMO. Latvia for example thinks they have a shot at the gold and to move up next year and then they play Russia in the finals and get blown out 9-0 not fair to them.

Keeping places free for Russia and Belarus in the higher divisions while they are not participating is what would take these spots away from others. Rejoining from the bottom does no such thing.

And every international sport federation should inform them that each time they flap their gums spewing comical nonsense comes with an additional 5 year ban tacked on to all athletes from these two countries, every sport. every athlete.

They didn't remain a state. Well, not for long at least.

Even when they do join, they better hope every tournament is on Russian soil, because if not, their teams are going to get booe'd (or worse) at every venue, hotel, and restaurant they go to.

Maybe it's because I haven't paid attention to the whole geo-political issue, but why is Belarus banned?

Belarus is the biggest ally of Russia during the Ukraine invasion. They are doing everything possible to support Russia attack Ukraine except sending their own troops to Ukraine and firing missiles. Russia is attacking from inside Belarus borders to Ukraine to make it very hard for Ukraine to defend the Russian invasion. It's a big deal, because now Ukraine has to split their forces more, hence it's easier to attack Ukraine from multiple directions when the other areas have less troops now. Few weeks ago Belarus made a (fake) referendum to allow Russia to have nuclear weapons inside Belarus territory. So yeah, Belarussian leaders are some nice people for their hospitality.

your silly, kindergarten whataboutisms aside, because innocent civilians are forced to suffer from the actions of despots and tyrants. 12 year ban. only reviewable after 12 years. And if strict conditions are not met, then extend it for another 12.

Nobody cares about civilians. IIHF members care about self- interest. The situation in Ukraine hits too close to home.

As previously mentioned, this is why other IIHF members haven’t been punished despite committing awful atrocities (invasions, indiscriminate killing, mass executions, ethnic cleaning, annexation of land, etc).
Shit, the IIHF just gave China the royal treatment at the Olympics despite their wicked human rights abuses,

The difference is our (Russia) current actions adversely effect other IIHF members. This is why we’re being banned.

The IIHF has every right to ban us. But let’s not dramatize the reason with ridiculous notions of ethics or worry about innocent civilians. It’s all about self-interest. Always has been.

So how long should we be banned? Years? Until Putin is gone? Until the war is over?
I dunno.
