As we all know, 16/17 season from Marian Gaborik was very bad. Very very bad.

He is under contract to 2020/2021 season. He is now 35. Sad part of this is, this wasnt his first bad season in LA Kings.
He said, he was injured and in the off-season he must heal his knees. It isnt know, if he must go under scalpel, but that is (according to him) also an option. Looking to his very long injury list in the past, this isnt also a good news.

So, does he have any future in LA Kings team?

A lot depends on if the Kings part ways with Sutter. If the Kings go that route, I would hold off a bit and see how he does under a new system. He looked decent and effective at the World Cup of Hockey, so a change of system is all he might need.

14-15: 69GP, 27G, 20A, 47pts
15-16 & 16-17: 110GP, 22G, 21A, 41pts

If he's hurt, they can't buy him out. I'm not sure they should even if he was healthy. Too much dead cap space for too many years. They would clear less than $4m in cap space next year if they could do it. By itself, that does almost nothing. Who are you getting for less than $4m? Lose Lewis to Vegas, that would be almost $6m in space, but not for more than a couple years. Oshie would probably get at least $6m.

He won't retire, as he's owed too much money. He won't be taken in the draft or traded. If he had 1 year left on his contract, you could dump him somewhere, and even then the Kings would have to add to get that done. 4 years on the contract? That's multiple 1st round pick territory, plus probably another prospect, even at 50%. I'm guessing he'll be a King, whether on the ice or on LTIR.

Unless there's a plan to have a 2 year window for next year and the year after. It's $3m in dead cap space starting in 19-20, as well as 20-21, assuming Gaborik is healthy and can be bought out in a few weeks.

Best case scenario: LTIR

The Kings would have a hard time proving he is injured.

I think we try to get vegas to take him Next option is hold on to him for a year to see if he can play a full healthy year while eating another year of his contract. The buyout looks better the longer you keep him. Also i honestly think he ll retire soon The contract was front loaded. I believe when we signed him he did say he signed longer then he wanted to make the money work. To me that said ill retired before this contract is done. He retires early no cap hit for the future because he signed before age 35

Nothing yet. He looked great at the World Cup. I would try to swing something if Sutter comes back though, I don't think his body can handle that style anymore.

Gaborik salary for remainder of his contract:

2017-18 : $5,075,000
2018-19 : $4,575,000
2019-20 : $3,175,000
2020-21 : $3,075,000

And he's already 35. He'll be 39 in the last year of his contract. What a terrific signing that turned out to be. One of Dean's many dumb decisions since coming off the high of the 2014 Cup run.

Keep him another season or two until the cost to unload him is lower. Give him 20 games next season under a new coach and if he looks the same then bury him in the minors. I know the cap savings is minimal but maybe, just maybe that'll get him to try harder.

Hopefully he retires and enjoys his millions vacationing on the beach.

Even after two more years, if Gaborik retired, he would be leaving over $6M on the table.

After the last CBA, the front loaded contracts aren't so great. Probably just makes a buyout more palatable.

This, part of me thinks Gaborik is broken, the other part thinks Sutter is the guy that broke him.

Not necessarily. He could retire from the NHL and go play in the Czech or Slovak league or even the KHL. Be back at home in Europe with his model gf or is it wife yet, and still make millions.

the year after he signed he potted 27 goals. bear in mind that was in 2015, but still, I dont think hes totally done yet. I'd give him another year and if he still sucks, then think about a buyout or trade

I dunno, if you look at the 2014 playoffs, most of Gaborik's big goals were scored from in tight right at the net.

Gaborik has great hands and used them well in the 2014 playoffs. He didn't just jam pucks back at the net. When he got a pass or a rebound in close, he used his hands to made no mistake.

Does Gaborik still go the to net enough to get those kind of results? Is that really a function of Sutter's system? Maybe Gaborik just can't snipe like he did 10 years ago.

One of the games after Gaborik was a HS he was one of the best players on the ice. Him and Sutter obviously don't get along and I think he could do better elsewhere or under a different system.

Just like many other players, I think we have to see how he fares with a new coach/system, because trading him or buying him out actually probably hurts us more in the nearest future.

And we saw a completely different dude at the World Cup.

Yeah, I'd go with this and it has worked, when either a player is moved to a different team or a new coach and system arrive. I saw it this year with Sam Gagner

Look at his stats, the red glare is coming off of his lone FLyers year, 8 goals ,8 assists. Stable similar numbers except for the year under Haks. This year, with Columbus, 18 goals and 50 pts, which is back to his subset. He made it pretty clear last year how unhappy he was with how Haks used (or didn't) him. I don't like Haks at all, so I understood his frustration. But night and day this year iwth his play.
Sutter is a **** and vinegar coach who is hard on his players and Iggy said (while he was still in Calgary and Sutter was hired by the Kings) Sutter's very hard on his top players and not all of them handle it well.
I think Gabby was clearly more comforable at the Worlds and it showed on every shift. And if a new coach can even bring back a decent part of that, he flourishes, he's a difference maker. He has the speed and skill.

If he has surgery on both knees he will be out a long time, that would be better than buying him out. It's not like he's known to bounce back from injury.
