The problem with LTIR is that it might help us this upcoming season, but the years after that are uncertain. What if in fall of 2018 he is fully recovered and can play hockey. Gaborik may come off LTIR, which makes it impossible for us to sign someone with his same cap hit over the summer.
Unless it is certain that the type of injury Gaborik suffered is permanent, I doubt we get any benefit from putting him on LTIR.
