It's pretty simple. And I don't understand why people don't get this. He is having a BAD year. THATS IT.
Because of his consistency throughout his career, and he has arguably been the most consistent elite performer in the NHL throughout his career, people expect Lundqvist to be infallible.
He's not. He's a human being. He's provided 8 consecutive years of elite play to the organization. This one isn't one. That's all there is to it.
Malkin / Ovechkin have had off seasons as forwards. Giroux is terrible this season. Doesn't mean Giroux is bad, or he's "done" which some people seem to imply about Lundqvist on here, it implies that Giroux is having a bad season.
Quick / Price have both had bad years. In fact, two out of Quick's five seasons have been below average statistically. Two out of Price's six season's have been below average statistically. Last year, Luongo was below average.
Great players have off seasons. It just so happens Lundqvist is having an off season when the Rangers are terrible both offensively and defensively. And it further compounds the problems of the teams success. In the past, his out of this world performances have kept the team afloat in their darkest times. Without Lundqvist providing an average season, you're seeing how bad the team can be without him as the back bone. The injuries don't help either.
