Speculation: What Teams Would Claim Yakupov Off Waivers?

Plenty of chatter on HF Oil right now after media guys in Edmonton yesterday apparently said they wouldn't be all that surprised if Yakupov is waived.

He is being outplayed in Edmonton's camp.

What teams out there would have time for him as a 2.5m experiment?

I think a bunch would like to claim him. I would hope he would somehow fall to Dallas. With all our injuries he could be a decent pick up

Leas are a maybe.

They're a rebuilding team and as such can take big risks like this. Shanahan and others in their management group also seem to really like Russian players. Though they already have too many forwards as is

How is taking a chance on a 23 year old, former 1st OV pick signed to a 1 year 2.5M contract a big risk?

Seems like the perfect low risk high reward situation to me

I bet its less than we think.

I agree, it's probably not every team in the league.

But there has to be at least a handful of teams willing to take a chance on him and see if he can do something different outside of Edmonton. And with only one year left on his deal, it's pretty low risk.

This is pretty much the argument for why teams should retain cap space heading into the season. I'm sure there's a few teams who would like to scoop him up but simply don't have the space

I really don't think they will waive him I'm pretty sure this thread started all the rumours. They will trade him or sit him in the press box till an injury happens if they can't find a spot for him.

I find it hard to believe that he would even make it to waivers.

He's only got 1 year left on his deal, so no long term commitment. Someone with room would at least be willing to give up a 7th round pick for him I imagine.

Cant see the Oilers waiving Yak ...they would explore trade before that...again, probably for a young player needing a change like Yak.

Unfortunately for Yak he worries too much about who he's playing with rather than just taking care of his own.

I am not sure why people think Yak has been bad this preseason.

He played well in his first and only preseason game.

Rishague on 1260 just said Oilers aren't thinking about waiving him.

I know Oiler management has been bad through recent years but one would think they could trade him for a pick. Anything they got back would be better than dumping him to waivers.

this. Literally every team would.

I don't think every team would. Doesn't Yakupov play RW exclusively?

The Flyers for one, would likely pass on him with Simmonds, Voracek, Weise as a 1-2-3 on the RW and Schenn and Konecny being natural RWs that may play LW.

Yakupov isn't very good.

I do. He might bench him for sure, but Babcock is a teacher. He'll want to see if he can shape Yakupov into something useful before giving up on him.

I think I disagree with you here, maybe for the first time. While I agree that Babcock is a great motivator and teacher, Lou, Babs and Shanny have really been hammering the "be a good pro" line and I am not so sure Yak has done that.

While I think he works hard on the ice (the words of those who watch him most say that) I am not sure he has been that great off the ice. He had issues with his coach that he went public with and he asked for a trade too I believe. Can't imagine they would want to bring someone in like that with impressionable kids around.

Not doubting his talent or the fact that he could turn everything around but I doubt the Leafs take a chance on him when it contradicts the exact line they have been spouting for over a year now.

Leafs wouldn't have the space to claim Yakupov.

But a Leivo and/or Greening for Yakupov deal could work.

High picks will always be given a second chance to see if they can regain their potential in another setting. I'd say that there would be a lot of teams who would take a shot at a former first overall. Probably some teams would trade assets for him. A change of scenery has worked for a few guys in the past.
