Yakupov wouldn't be claimed on waivers by the leafs IMO due to cap and roster reasons, but if the Leafs current roster was like their last year's roster, I'm sure they'd swing a 3rd Edmonton's way for Yakupov

I could of course see Edmonton walking away from Yak, but it seems inconceivable that they would not work out a trade rather than waiving him.

So, that "better than nothing trade" from the Pens would be something like Eric Fehr. 2 million dollar cap hit this year and next. Versatile, experienced. Some scoring, some size. Useful on special teams, fresh off a cup win.

Hard to imagine that no other team would offer better, but Fehr improves the Oilers of today and it surely makes sense for the Pens to try and see if Yak could turn things around on Malkin's wing. Having Gonchar in his ear for support should help too. As Malkin's line might well see mostly bottom six opposition this year, it should be a pretty ideal situation for Yak to excel and get confidence in.

And if THAT doesn't work, well... then he might be better off just getting out of this league.

Yak to Pitt is good idea, but I'm not sure the Oilers could take Fehr back. The whole point of moving Yak would be to make room on the roster for Caggiula and/or Puljujarvi - if Fehr comes in return, then those guys would both have to be sent down to the AHL, which kinda defeats the purpose of moving Yak in the first place. I know the Pens would need to move Fehr for the cap room, so I'm wondering if they could trade Fehr to a 3rd team, and then send a prospect (Jarry?) to EDM for Yak - that would make more sense to me.

If Matt Greene proved himself healthy and ready to play - would the Oilers take him back for Yak and slot him in instead of Gryba?

Just spitballing. No clue if the Kings would be interested.

Ottawa would definitely put a claim. I'd trade Lazar for Yakupov today.

Honest question, would it benefit the Penguins to take him? Is he better than Kuhnhackl right now?

EDM will give him more of a shot during reg season. Puljujarvi isn't quite ready yet. And Hendricks and Pakarinen are now injured for the next month or more. Versteeg isn't signed yet, and is also nursing an injury although I expect he will be signed.

maybe once Puljujarvi is fully ready he is the one who pushes Yak out of a spot. But he wont be on waivers anytime soon.

Doubt he goes to the wires, an offer would come in. Alternatively he might sit in the pressbox, other guys are pushing him out though.

He probably doesn't make it past TOR if he hits waivers. Even if they just pick him up with the intention to flip him for picks after a brief showcase. TOR have been shrewd and don't **** around acquiring picks.

We can't afford to showcase Yak if he's not one of the top forwards. We're trying to win now.

Well, Jarry is absolutely not happening :D . The only way Pens could move for Yakupov is if the perception is we don't lose anything important in taking what is obviously a chance.

I don't know Edmonton's situation well enough to argue finer points, but my presumotion would be that Fehr would be a relatively big 4th line and PK improvement for a team that has enough young blood as it is. Like it was important for us to get Cullen last year.

Can Fehr play wing do you know?

Why not put one of the guys that are just as good, are already Leafs property and have earned a chance with the Leafs, with Matthews and see what happens?

Let the best man win.

He's a former first overall - I'd waive a guy like a holland or greening just to see what Yak could do

I think most teams would pass on him. I've seen a lot of comments that the Leafs would take him considering they would have the first crack at him.

I highly highly highly doubt the Leafs would have any interest in him whatsoever.

I know as a Leaf fan I sure wouldn't be to happy if we did.

That's what he does for us unless injuries require him to play C.

Big boy as well. 6'4, right shot, low cap hit. He's the type of guy Chia likes size wise, I don't know a lot about him. I noticed he has low penalty minutes throughout his career, how is his physical game? Specifically on the forecheck?

I live on the west coast and have spent many a night seeing what Yak can do. That's why I don't want him on the Leafs.
People should get over the misleading #1 overall tag and accept Yakupov for what he really is.

If I thought we could complete a deal you and I, I would go into great detail :). We cannot however - and I think I'll just leave it at saying he is a much better player than Hendricks and he was trusted enough defensively to be out there icing the game when the Pens won the cup a few months back.

I'm just more curious than anything .

No idea who Yakupov is getting moved for, but I think his days in Edmonton are coming to an end.
