7.5 mil+cap bonus from LTIR. Seeing as it doesn't look like Anaheim and Lindholm are close to a deal at the moment, there isn't anything pressing them to move out cap ASAP.

Who do they have that they can put on LTIR? Also if anyone can answer this for me, as I've never fully understood how this works, but do teams need to have 23 players on their active roster counting against the cap at all times? I only ask because Anaheim only has 7.5M cap space with 20 contracts on the active roster. So if they need to carry 23 against the cap then they will have even less than 7.5M to sign Rakell and Lindholm.

If the Flames give in to the reported Gaudreau 8 mil contract demand, the Flames will probably need to move someone but it'd be small.

I think they'll be fine. With Smid failing his physical he should be on LTIR and the only bonuses they potentially have that I am aware of would be if Tkachuk makes the team, which I don't exactly think he's ready to do.

Nah you can run less than 23. You only save under a million for having someone in the ahl tho so most teams don't unless they are really tight to the cap.

Do they have a #7 in mind at this point?

A year ago the Flyers were stuck with Pronger, Grossmann, Vinny Lacav, Luke Schenn
Now they just have Andrew MacDonald who is over paid but at least Servicable

Don't teams have to be cap compliant BEFORE putting players on LTIR?

No. It just usually works out better if they can do it that way.

Edit: to clarify, teams have to be cap compliant during the regular season before invoking the LTIR Exception. Teams can however invoke the LTIR Exception before the start of the season during training camp without being cap compliant beforehand.

Right the would've to agree to get dealt, Maybe something involving Bishop going to Dallas and maybe Niemi coming to Tampa with a retention or something like that and maybe a deal sending Filppula to Nashville those are the kind of deals that could possibly happen.
Easier to get Bishop to waive his NMC he must know that he's no longer in the Bolts plan. A legit #1 goalie who rot on the bench does not get his value up.

if a player is on long term injury AND if the team is over the daily cap limit... a team can get relief up to the daily cap limit.

cap is calculated daily so its not like a team gets the full cap hit of its replacement player... theres no banking extra cap relief.

when the injured player passes his physical, the team must immediately become cap compliant

using a temperary ltir to do longterm planning is stupid and no real team would do this... ltir is just there to help teams respond to unplanned injuries

in reality theres often more than 23 contracts counting... a team doesnt need 23 counting but most teams carry a full roster. players dont like being sent to minors, and for pr reasons, a team wont want to get a reputation for bouncing players back and forth.

meanwhile short term injuries dont qualify for cap relief but do create a hole in the roster. most teams have guys on short term injury all the time... often the team will callup a player

so there might be 24... 25... 26 contracts counting against the cap

and we also need to remember ltir contracts also count against the cap. ltir contracts count every single penny up to the cap ceiling... only after the maximum is reached, will a ltir relief come into effect.

so ltir is only useful when the cap is maxed out to the limit...

very few teams want to be maxed out... it makes deadline trades very diffucult.

most teams want to bank unused cap... then use this cap saving to loadup at the deadline.

ltir is there to help teams that are screwed over by injuries... its not a tool that a team will ever be glad to plan on using

noo, hockey does not have the most stupid money.

it's definitely basketball or baseball. both have massive contracts for average players.

Role players and depth guys now get 15m in today's NBA.. see mozgov, and the overall money that goes into player salary in baseball is unbelievable
