Who do they have that they can put on LTIR? Also if anyone can answer this for me, as I've never fully understood how this works, but do teams need to have 23 players on their active roster counting against the cap at all times? I only ask because Anaheim only has 7.5M cap space with 20 contracts on the active roster. So if they need to carry 23 against the cap then they will have even less than 7.5M to sign Rakell and Lindholm.
in reality theres often more than 23 contracts counting... a team doesnt need 23 counting but most teams carry a full roster. players dont like being sent to minors, and for pr reasons, a team wont want to get a reputation for bouncing players back and forth.
meanwhile short term injuries dont qualify for cap relief but do create a hole in the roster. most teams have guys on short term injury all the time... often the team will callup a player
so there might be 24... 25... 26 contracts counting against the cap
and we also need to remember ltir contracts also count against the cap. ltir contracts count every single penny up to the cap ceiling... only after the maximum is reached, will a ltir relief come into effect.
so ltir is only useful when the cap is maxed out to the limit...
very few teams want to be maxed out... it makes deadline trades very diffucult.
most teams want to bank unused cap... then use this cap saving to loadup at the deadline.
ltir is there to help teams that are screwed over by injuries... its not a tool that a team will ever be glad to plan on using
