Why is Chicago last right now in this vote?

Devils and Sabres are the clear one and two but what does Anaheim, Detroit and Montreal have that Chicago doesn't?

Alex Vlasic is probably the best young defensive defencemen right now in all the teams above and only Silayev has a higher defensive ceiling.

Levshunov has perhaps the highest ceiling among defensive prospects in Chicago/Anaheim/Montreal/Detroit.

And then there is Kevin Korchinski, who was a 7th overall and the youngest defencemen in the league last year.

And then there is Sam Rinzel, Ethan Del Mastro and others who shows promise.

Yeah, the prospects still has to hit but that goes for Detroit, Montreal and Anaheim as well.

I will only speak to NJ but not what people think I would touch on. Something that is a wildcard for NJ is the trio of Barabosha, Karpovich and Orlov. Nobody really know what we have with those defenders. They don't get a chance to compete best on best within their age group and given the geopolitical climate, are seen as an afterthought. Orlov in particular has put up 8 points in 10 VHL games before the age of 20 and is seen mostly as an elite skating defensive defensmen.

I wouuld even say his 7 points in 60 games is pretty damn good as a 19/20 year old in the KHL as a 7th defensmen every game.

Eh, Buffalo is the only team here where one of the young guys has already established that he’s an elite #1 defenseman in the NHL. A lot of prospect potential ultimately goes unrealized.
Well at Dahlin's advanced age he should be that good. He's 24, that's 75 in HF years. By this time next season he will be an old cap dump but his run was fun while it lasted. Somewhere out there is a middle school kid that's already going first in a redraft.

I was thinking he counts as graduated for purposes of this exercise.

I have them near the end of this pack because there isn’t much proven yet. Vlassic looks like a sure fire top 4 guy and likely a top pairing D who is more of a defensive first specialist. Chicago just isn’t as far along in their rebuild. They have the potential to be the best among all of these teams but when ranking them I’m inclined to go with more proven players.

Detroit being extremely underrated as always.
Kind of odd to say right after my post ranking them 2nd.

For me it is Buffalo and Detroit.

When you say "future" It probably comes down to how we weigh NHL Dmen like Dahlin and Seider. At 23 and 24 they are among the best young D in the game while their teams have a ton of depth coming behind them.

My comment wasn’t about you it was about the rest of the thread…

Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec are still 20 years old....do you believe they will be stagnant until 23 or 24?

I'd love to put the Habs at the top. And I believe they could get there. I am just going to do the Eastern Conference....but for me it goes...

Jersey - Hughes, Nemec, Silyayev is unreal
Buffalo - Dahlin, Power, Byram....c'mon
Habs - Guhle, Reinbacher, Hutson, Mailloux, Xhekaj
Red Wings - Seider, Edvinsson
Ottawa - Sanderson, Yakemchuk

Wild to make a list like this an exclude a top 20 draft pick who has trended well.

No, just as I expect Hughes and Nemec to continue improving for the next 6 to 7 years. Keep in mind Nemec played last year as a 19 year old and L Hughes had just turned 20 during camp. This is a thread about projecting the future. When you say, it's how you weigh defensmen like Dahlin and Seider, L Hughes is every bit in the same tier as those two at a much younger age.

Otherwise Buffalo but I consider that Dahlin is too old (already 24).

How is Buffalo on this list?
Not wanting to include a 24 year old in terms of the "future" is wild.

Bunch of Leonardo DiCaprio GM's on these boards. Once you turn 25 you're done, time to move on and get younger.

Dahlin is by far the safest bet to be an elite #1 D in 5-8 years of anyone from any of these teams.

It's not that. In Sport, 23 is the end of the hopeful category.

What do we mean by future? U20? U21? U23? U25?

"Future" doesn't really need to be super specifically defined for it to be still be dumb to exclude Dahlin on the basis of being too old unless you think we are talking about the year 2041.

Dahlin will be a top flight Dman for like another 10 years.

Whether "future" means 3 years (Dahlin will be 27) 5 years (29) or 7 years (31) how is he not relevant to the equation?

Funny post from the Leafs and Flames fans saying MTL only have B's and C's prospects and no top pair defenceman.

- Reinbacher is projecting to be the best defenceman in 2023 draft.
- Guhle is already playing 1st and MTL best defenceman.
- Hutson is the best offensive defenceman prospect coming from the NCAA in a long time.
- Mailloux was a top 5 defenceman in the AHL last season while been a rookie.
- Xhekaj is probably the most physical defenceman in the league.
- Engstrom was #1 defenceman on his WJC team 2 years ago.

Majority of fans from rival teams in Canada refuse to compliment rival teams... It's not surprising at all.

I'm not a fan really of any team in Canada but I voted Habs having the best future D core... I love the makeup of their defensemen prospects/youth
