What probability do you feel Ovechkin has to catch Gretzky now?

10%? Like someone else said, it won’t matter as he’s already the GOAT for goal scoring.
Won't matter to who.
Leading goal scorer is the leading goal scorer.
If Gretzky scored more than anyone ....that makes Wayne the goat scoring

180 behind after today.

At age 35, man that just seems like a lot of goals.

He looked good today though. So who knows?

I'd have picked Bossy prior to Ovechkin for sure as that "pure goal scoring" guy.

No, I find it impressive that these same centres lead the NHL in goals and assists and their assist total actually seems more impressive than the goals total, despite the goals total being incredible as well.

Cool, so they are better players, and had more impressive overall seasons, but I am not sure how that makes them a better goal scorer than someone else. If you have 50 goals and 50 assists, and I have 50 goals and 25 assists, we are evenly impressive goal scorers. Just cause you are the more impressive player and had a better season, doesn't make it a solid argument when it comes to 'best goal scorer'

Lock outs and strikes have done in other eras too. With Gretzky and Mario. It is too bad.
Never happened untill Betman arrived
Are you sure it wasn't when fehr arrived ? He had a history of lockouts before the NHL

I always find these angled arguments so silly. Like do you think anybody actually considers Mark Recchi a better goal scorer than Bossy? But he compiled more goals!

If Marc scored 92 in one year I would. Or 87. Or maybe if Mark had once scored as many as Bossy in a single season . But since Mark never did that. No.

Aha. Just liked someone mentioned that the type of sticks they used wouldn't matter because they all had them, the goalies don't matter either. The goalies don't matter because they all played against them. Its all relative.

If Ovie ends the year at 730, let's say then seasons of 40, 40, 30, 30, 25 would put him at 895.

That's certainly not impossible if he stays healthy and there are full seasons. It'll be extremely tough but I feel if he wants to get the record, he will.

I think there is a reason the person said greatest and not leading goal scorer.

Ron Francis, Michel Goulet and Patrick Marleau are not greater goal scorer than Maurice Richard, despite having more regular season goals.

Someone scoring 893 goals that would have played in the low scoring original 6, 50 games a season than 70 for most of is career could be a greater goal scorer than someone that would have scored 894 from 1977 to 1998

There you go, now you are bringing up actually valuable statistics that bolster an argument.

I said before the season he needs to get to 740 by the end of the season. He'll have to pick up the pace to get to 730 now.

180 goals after 35 has been done several times in the NHL already. It's not like Ovechkin would have to do something that hasn't been done before in order to break gretzky's record at this stage of his career...

0 and it's always been 0the mere thought is ridiculous

Selanne scored 192 goals after is 35 years old season.

Ovechkin scoring 15 goals until the end of this season + 192 goals the rest of is career would put him at 920, that 26 more goal than Gretzky.

It was not always ridiculous to give it a significant change (15% or more), specially the way scoring is up in the league (and before game got removed for covid).

Well i didn't say no chance, and I never said it hasn't been done before, but it's not common, especially with as much mileage as Ovi has.
At the end of the day, if he wants the record, he will stick around for it, but it will take longer than 4 years because he won't score 40 goals at age 38.

The Flyers commentator already regards him as the best goal scorer of all time. He said as much.

I think it’s funny that when Ovi passed bossy and Mario the Ovi crowd said he was automatically better cause he had more goals. Now those same folks are saying well Ovi doesn’t need to pass Gretzky to be considered the best.
