I hate the culture Dubas has created. There isn’t any accountability, it’s all cozy and coddled. The team looks like him, highly skilled and soft.
I argee with you that Dubas is highly intelligent but I disagree with the soft comment. He has begun to get a reputation of being a hard-nose negotiater: Hyman contract, not giving in to the oliers.

Starts with the Tavares signing. I have nothing against either him or his play, but he was not what the team needed, and that signing threw everything out of whack.

It probably goes back just a bit farther, to letting Lou go and letting Dubas play GM too soon.

The culture is soft, that’s on him, and I’m glad he’s finally figuring out contracts, you can only be rolled so many times by agents.

I know a few years old now…..but I still hate that it was ever considered acceptable or prudent to wear a Mickey Mouse t shirt to a game. Disrespectful and immature….especially for “grown men”

I hate Marners contract of course. What I hate most about him is that he's making peak salary but has so many holes in his game, he's not clutch, he's not fast, he doesn't have an excellent shot, he is small and weak on his skates and the puck, he isn't physical, he is mentally weak.... He's skilled but with the amount of holds in his game he shouldn't be paid more than 9 million.

I know not all top players will be without holes, however, clutch, speed and willingness to battle are three of what I consider the most important playoff characteristics.

Yup, there are probably lots of reasonable answers (accordiing to you)...And that is what matter most when looked at and summed up after responses.

For me: We are too soft all arround: and ya ya some fans tend to think that the "forward motion thinking and stacking those chips will work,...eventually)

WRONGO!

Our team can only create a momentem swing (Which is totally important) But,...we can only create one when we score.

There are way more aspects to the game, and when we get pinned in our end and no one hits,..or they just do a drive by,.,..it shows our weakness, and proves one of our weaknesses. The opposition shows no fear against us. Can you blame them? Nom,,it's our lack of effort and guts that are to blame and it carries on and throughout our line-up.

Yup we need to add gritty players that cover up our finesse players that want no part of of playing griity!

We need a shake up and new direction unfortunatley. (lets not blame it on goalies,...the players up front give too much white ice because "WE THE GREATEST POND HOCKEY TEAM THAT COULD PLAY WITHOUT BOARDS"

Teams around us that are up-coming have added tons of grit so,..there is also that.

IT is time to give up 1 of our top 4. Marner still makes so ego headed passes, Morgan does too and looks more like a forward.

WE are desperate,..I am desperate. Dubas should be desperate ( and has never made a ballsy big trade)

Guts before glory is all I'm asking. GLG!

throw out some ideas, likes or dislikes, remedies....bandaids..ect...
It’s sad but the thing that pisses me off the most is how hard this team is to like.
I have loved this team for four decades. This group of players and management is turning me.
Just an unlikable group that will be quickly forgotten when someone steps in and dismantles them.

"The oilers weren't able to take advantage of Dubas like agents/gm's previously did" isn't exactly a compliment.

The problem with Dubas is that it was a horrible mistake to assign a rookie gm to handle our star players contracts. He and Shanahan thought that the nice guy approach and "team culture" would lead to discounts. Shanahan even asked for them. But those players hired VERY experienced shark agents who made a food out of rookie Dubas.

And it's not entirely his fault. It's the position he was in. Dubas caved last minute to Nylander in humiliating fashion and missed 3 months of his play. Nylander decided to just not even play hockey that year for some reason. Maybe as payback? I don't know. But he paced for like 10 goals 30 points over 82.

If the same thing happened with Matthews and/or Marner, Dubas new he may be fired. Those agents essentially went to Dubas and said "If you don't give us exactly what we want, we're sitting out until December 1st. Don't even bother trying to call us. Say, how do you think that might fare for your employment?"

Because Dubas is a rookie, he had no choice but to give the blank cheques. If you get fired a year into your first gm gig, you're likely done. The heat he'd take for them sitting out would be FAR worse than dramatically overpaying them. But you see... an experienced veteran gm like Lou could say "Fine. Sit. The whole year even. You f***s. If I get fired I'll be signed the very next day with the Islanders for more money. You'll get NOTHING this year if you sit."

TLDR: Dubas being a rookie gave too much leverage to shark agents at the negotiation table.

I've never been more embarrassed to be a fan of this team tbh. The Sundin years? There was at least a a few playoff round wins. The Burke/Nonis years? The team sucked, and we all knew it, but at least they played with a spine, and the wins actually meant something.

But now? Dubas has built a team that is downright embarrassing and plays horrible hockey. For the first time in about 8 years I didn't attend the Leafs game here in Winnipeg because I can't even cheer for this team anymore. If the top guys can't be bothered to give a shit why should I? And then Dubas filled in the rest of the roster with equally soft players. If I wanted to watch a bunch of divas run around scared of contact I'd turn on an NBA game.

This is exactly what I knew Dubas would build when he was hired, yet the resident analytics "geniuses" loved it.

My problem is I do not trust Dubas, which also means I don't trust Shanny (he has drunk Dubas' kool-aid since the day he hired him, and that's why it looks like Shanny is afraid to put his stamp on how this team should be constructed). I only want Dubas to acquire players at the deadline if it doesn't include draft picks.
And I would consider extending them if we won at least 3 rounds. Anything less, and I hope and pray that they both are shown the door.

I think we can all be armchair QB, myself for example my Armchair GM observation is it was an utterly wasteful exercise to allow UFA's walk with no compensation back. I get Mikheyev, Hyman, Campbell were all parts of the team that were supposed to compete but the win now philosophy only works for one team every year and some of the teams that win the cup don't mortgage the future. I often wonder if we did trade JVT, Bozak, Andersen for something would that something 3 to 5 years ago be helping the team now on a cap friendly contract? To allow so much value bleed away for the sake of 0 first round wins taught Marner, Nylander, Rielly, Matthews what exactly? I despise trading first rounders, I really don't like overpaying for UFA's, which is what Mrzek and Jarnkrok (4 years?) are. I don't like taking gambles on trades like Barrie and Murray. I think along with the massive contracts for the big 4 , the lack of roster value management is killing this team. Now we are at a place where we have to make trades that we dont want to make ... waste of a generational talent.

I’ve heard Kyper and others talk about the Leafs turning Perry away and it’s just too unbelievable to think it’s true. Probably is, though.
Perry would've been perfect.

Pietrangelo was another huge miss. A top pairing, cup winning, former captain, RD hits the market and wants to sign with Toronto, and Dubas can't even trade Marner's bitch ass to make it happen? That might be his biggest miss yet

This team has no hockey soul. They all want to be the hero but none of them wants to do the work to get there.

What pisses me off the most is coming to these boards after a great win, only to see people whine and complain that it wasn't a perfect game

What pisses me off is that this shitty team is only second in the division with only our top goalie and Muzzin and a few other injuries. But what's even worse is that Dubas was unable to predict Covid. How can we pay a man so much and yet he couldn't see a pandemic 3 years before it happened?

Well, we don’t have a top goalie really. Injuries are a part of the game, that’s why depth is important and not committing half your cap to 4 players, who haven’t won squat. The COVID argument is negligible, as it affected the rest of the league as well. But in reality you should have to factor in the possibility of a few years of flat cap

Team has almost no chance of winning a cup as currently configured. The team is unlikeable, and their identity is that of a gutless team. It's been like that since Kadri left. Ultimately they are top heavy, no depth., and as a GM you can't rely on signing guys for $1M and hope they produce like top 6 guys making $5M+. Hyman has also been a huge loss for us.
Hyman was a huge let down every playoff for the Leafs. He was terrible.

The ACL year was understandable but the rest was just as poor.
