And yet he had 11 goals in 16 playoff games for EDM, and was a PPG player.
And John Druce once scored 17 pts in 15 PO gms for Washington...and neither of them won a cup. So what's your point? In about 2 years (maybe less considering his playing style) that contract is going to look like ASS for the Oil. Still going to be boo-hoo-ing about us not signing him then?

I hate Marners contract of course. What I hate most about him is that he's making peak salary but has so many holes in his game, he's not clutch, he's not fast, he doesn't have an excellent shot, he is small and weak on his skates and the puck, he isn't physical, he is mentally weak.... He's skilled but with the amount of holds in his game he shouldn't be paid more than 9 million.

I know not all top players will be without holes, however, clutch, speed and willingness to battle are three of what I consider the most important playoff characteristics.
Tell the truth. You would still find a reason to hate Marner if he played for free.

Well, we don’t have a top goalie really. Injuries are a part of the game, that’s why depth is important and not committing half your cap to 4 players, who haven’t won squat. The COVID argument is negligible, as it affected the rest of the league as well. But in reality you should have to factor in the possibility of a few years of flat cap

23 of the league's 32 teams (71.8%) started the season with $1,000,000 or less of cap space.

13 of those teams had $0 in cap space.

18 (!) of those 23 teams (~79%) are currently utilizing LTIR as their only means to find cap space currently.

I know it's fashionable and fun for some to dump on the Leafs cap management, but let's stop pretending like Toronto is the only team that were crunched by the flat cap.

All I said in my original comment was to acknowledge that Hyman was a huge loss for us. I understand our cap space is in issue, and the term of his deal, I am not boo-hooing his loss, it's understandable. But you are subtracting a 30/30 regular season guy who will go into the corners and battle. Yes the playoff performance didn't match, but honestly Marner and Matthews have been pretty terrible in the playoffs despite the points. I don't see the current team as constructed winning anything close to a cup, which was also part of my original point. The guys that Dubas let go such as Kadri, Hyman, Marchment, Grundstrom, are the kind of players this team needs - Heavy guys that can battle and score. The identity of the team would be so much different. As it stands we have no offensive depth, no identity, no heart.

Tell the truth... Marner could record no points in the playoffs and shoot the puck into his own net in game 7 overtime of the Stanley cup final and you'd still be on this board telling everyone how incredible he is.

The player can score 0 playoff goals in 18 consecutive games, 0 pp goals in over 100 consecutive games (he's had 15 without a goal this season already) , single handedly cause two consecutive game 6 playoff losses.....and never do anything worthwhile in 3 series.

And you will still be here acting like posters have something personal against him instead of a business decision that it just ain't working outpaying him 11 million.

How about you provide evidence to support him being an excellent post season performer....? Are you willing to do that? Closer him to like paid players and show us how incredible Mitch has been.

Perry would've been perfect.

Pietrangelo was another huge miss. A top pairing, cup winning, former captain, RD hits the market and wants to sign with Toronto, and Dubas can't even trade Marner's bitch ass to make it happen? That might be his biggest miss yet
They had three young studs upfront and nothing on the backend and decided to sign FA Tavares.

As lots of people said at the time, It may have been wise to let them grow and try sign the D rather than JT.

I agree with you on 99.9%, but I don't think we should disrespect Giordano or even Spezza like that. Spezza was one of the select few who showed some heart in the playoffs while Gio has been an absolute stud on D, he's only been on the ice for 4 even strength goals this season which is the lowest of the d-men (not including Liljegren, Mete or Muzzin who have played <5 games).

I’m not trying to disrespect them. I appreciate them. A lot. Just that if we’re looking for big game players with killer instinct, fond memories of game 7’s and triumph, championship tales, etc. Spezza and Giordano kinda don’t have the experience.

Gio actually has fewer career playoff games played than Mitch Marner.

Our players have heart, the desire to want to be the best, but they tend to look down the bench for someone else to kickstart that momentum into our favor. We need more guys with 1 leg over the boards, frothing at the mouth, looking to make an impact when we are stuck in the mud.

This one part stuck out for me and reminded me of one of my mentors, He told my team once ... "..if you are looking down the bench for "someone" to make a difference, that "someone" is probably you." Simple but powerful.

As a thought experiment, I decided that anyone whose comment content consisted of stating something only about other fans attitudes would be put on my ignore list.

Seven of you are guilty.

He doesn't seem to care. Maybe he wants out?
This core reminds me so much of the Muskoka 5 that - at the time fans (me included) detested & wanted rid of...

That video makes me so freaking sad to watch. Look at the excitement of that crowd. I remember vividly how united the entire fanbase was about the future this young team. It was the most exciting time to be a leaf fan since I can even remember.

And then the unprecedented dramatic overpayments ruined everything.

Imagine telling a fan back then that in six years this core still hadn't won ONE SINGLE FREAKING PLAYOFF SERIES!!!! It would seem impossible. Unfathomable.
If your goal is to win playoff rounds and eventually put yourself in a position to contend, how can “We can and we will” and the entire mismanagement that happened because of that decision not be at the top of the list?
It’s still the root of all their problems.

Lack of tough , young , energetic, semi skilled , hitting at every chance , pissed off , tenacious , fast skating 4th line and 1 dMan to compliment every other skilled player who isn’t .
Toronto had one of those guys in mason marchment and proceeded to trade him for 5 foot 9 Dennis malgin….

The lack of effort from our forwards and the defence and the coach and management so I guess it’s the whole team game after game we watch them go out on the ice and the whole game is the same as watching the game warm ups just know effort what so ever it’s just hard to watch

Lots of people are saying it now but IIRC, the overwhelming majority were very excited about signing Tavares. I will still say that that was a no brainer and if lack of D was that big a concern, it was always possible to sign JT, then trade Nylander for a Dman but that's another story. The only way signing JT would have been a bad move is if we had to overpay him by a large margin and that was not the case.

Who says they are reluctant? Teams with young top 4 defensemen are reluctant to trade them away
Indeed. There might only be one young top 4 Dman available and Dubas might be reluctant to pay the asking price. And if that price is something along the lines of Knies, Robertson plus a 1st round pick, that's certainly understandable.

Yes they do. You can see it when Benn scored. You can see how happy Matthews and Nylander are when others find success.
and when Gio jumped Konecny, you could see how happy Matthews was

More pissed off at myself than anything. They finally did it the way I've always wanted...through the draft! Develop your own. And amassed an impressive group of talented youngsters, and still messed it all up! Did it the Edmonton way, always drafting the same types. This Best Player Available crap is the worst thing for GMs with big eyes. SHould have taken Hanifin over Marner, no matter how talented Marner was/is, we always need D. All the whining through the Burke years: We need a first line Centre and a Big Defenseman. Got lucky on the first, crapped the bed on the second. Marner's a great talent, but the greater need was and still is D.

In hindsight, imagine if Jarmo agreed to trade up to #4 and we took Rantanen with their #1 pick and a dman with the extra pick ??
