He’s playing hurt but I do think his style doesn’t age well as he gets older and can lead to injuries. 26 isn’t old but players similar to his style (Bure) started having their body turn on them around this age. I do think his game will have to change eventually. I can’t see him playing the same and same success as he did before as he enters his 30s without a decline or staying healthy. His speed and being able to make play at high speeds was what separated him from the rest of the league. Not being able to fully recover cause your team depends on you so much doesn’t help either.

He’s still injured, he doesn’t have that jump in his game. Why the heck did Edmonton rush him so quickly? I get he’s the franchise but you need him to rest and heal up. Can’t the other high priced players on the team cover for him? Draisital, Hyman, , Kane and Hugent-Hokpkins I’m sure can cover to some degree.

The rest of the team absolutely can't cover for his absence. They are on the verge of falling completely out of the standings, and frankly can't afford to be letting McDavid rest. Theoretically, the best move would be to sit him for a few weeks, take a couple of L's, and then push full-throttle when he comes back 100%, but with Woodcroft's job on the line, he isn't going to let that happen.

Whoa, not going to follow you on this straw man. Obviously that’s not what I said.

McDavid is perfect and deserves zero criticism. Sorry I even brought up such notion. It’s okay buddy. Take a breath.
Then what is it? I showed you that he doesn’t struggle in elimination games and you scoff and say “but…but 1 goal in 4 games! And his +/- is bad!” It’s a 4 game sample size you’re basing your entire argument on.

There’s a difference between him getting ALL the criticism and some of it. For example, he MUST be a bad leader since he hasn’t magically gotten his team to a championship, because ONE player has done that so many times.

He doesn’t need to be a shutdown guy, he does have to pretend to care that the D zone exists. Whatever balance of offense vs defense him and the coaching staff settle on, he HAS TO win his match ups. When the rest of the team is dogshit this is non negotiable. It doesn’t matter if he finishes his ES minutes 2-1 or 9-7, he simply cannot hand the rest of the team a losing score when his shift ends. For the rest of the team going 0-0 in their minutes is a win.

McDavid’s minutes + special teams net difference (PP minus PK) need to come out positive every single time if you’re praying for the rest of the team to tread water for 35 minutes and go even.
Maybe start by fixing the teams overall defense and goaltending, because those are the biggest issues, not McDavid failing his team because of what he does In his own end. I’m not saying he’s great defensively, but he’s far from the teams main problems.

Again, it can come out positive and his defense goaltending still be shit. He can do all he can in his own end and still not get the secondary support needed offensively.

He's still hurt. Probably some mental stuff as well given what's going on with the team but he's definitely not right physically. Doesn't have the same speed and explosiveness and he was even missing the net all over the place it seemed like. The Oilers really need to bite the bullet and just let him sit out. Write the year off if you have to (unless you can cobble together a team that can win in different ways without him but the Oilers seem incapable of doing that).

If he's injured sit him. This is the worst he's looked in his career. Flubbing passes and shots, falling over, slow (for him), can't move laterally, frustrated. Don't risk the golden goose to try and salvage a lost season.
That should be the only option. If he's injured, why play him AND lose when you can have him rest up and lose? The only difference is that he won't get to 100% if you do the former. And a 100% McDavid on the ice should be able to make a difference later in the season. I mean the St. Louis Blues was last in the league by New Years when they won the cup.

Starting to think it's less about an injury and more that the guy is just mentally/physically drained

I agree he should not be playing but the credo in Edmonton is Cup or bust they are in win now mode.

this is the end product of a decade of tanking for No.1 picks

complete loser mentality and team culture

If they have a loser mentality and culture then are they not successful in their mission?

What injury does Mcdavid even have? Whatever the case if it's something that will heal with rest, then rest the guy. Don't ruin the best player in the game because the rest of your team can't win without him. Obviously you want to make the playoffs, it's cup or bust afterall, but take some games off and don't make it worse by playing injured and still losing anyways.

Desperation? Trying to turn the sinking ship around.

Even the best players have down years. If this turns out to be the case for McDavid this season it’s not the end of the world. Frankly he’s due for one. Maintaining that insane level of play year after year after year is a lot to ask. He’ll heal up and could be back to 150 points next year.

Guy seems to be turning into a bigger baby with each passing year rather then growing out of it too. Tough look.
Well yeah I would too if my team wasted 8 years of my career and had this team to show for it now, guy looks frustrated as hell and probably can’t wait to gtfo of there

Even the broadcast noted just looking at his face he looks hurt.
Emotionally ooorrrrrrrr.....

But honesty... McDavid at whatever percentage he's at today, is still the most dangerous player in the league.. he may be hampered but he still creating chances and helping his team like mad..

Even the best players go through slumps. Probably not feeling mentally or physically 100% at the moment.

What about McDavid? Lol sorry that fastball was over the plate.

Seriously though if he’s hurt you leave him to heal. If the rest don’t step up, it just makes your decisions easier.

You don’t play him hurt to save your season or your coach. He is your organization.

Main thing is McDavey kinda sucks. He generates so much of his scoring off the rushl

That's not going to always translate to other players because he's a selfish asshole.

Draisaitl is a vastly superior player and a much better passer. McDavid is a selfish pucckhog who isn't even that good, if you take away his otherworldly speed.
Please point to me on this little puppet where McDavid hurt you.
