I'm not saying especially riveting necessarily, but lively and hot. Like tons of posts and fans. The game threads could really be intense - and, true enough, maybe not that high quality always, but to see a game thread of USA vs Switzerland not even getting one page full of posts is surely not ideal?
I don't see it as that different. I've never been one to get invested in the gdt threads. Russia being out of the tournament takes away some of the intrigue, the site probably has fewer active users, and that's about it from what I can see. The tournament along with hockey itself is somewhat less hot in Canada now compared to ten years ago, not sure about in other countries.

It is interesting hearing people list the tournament not being competitive as a reason when we are heading into the final day of round robin and there is a realistic chance of the Czechs and Slovaks finishing 1st in their respective groups.
What amazes me?

It's not even a snowballs chance in hell type thing?

For that to happen, here are the scenarios (which I'm sure you know, not mansplaining.lol):

Czechs beat Germany
Canada beats Sweden

Slovakia beats Swiss
US beat Finland

That is 'reasonable. Not saying it'll happen and lots can change in one amazing NYE set of games.

IF it happens it would also mean Czechs vs Swiss, Slovaks vs Germans and Canada/US/Sweden/Finland play each other in the quarters.lol

HFBoard activity in general seems muted to me this season. It's not that reddit offers people more; I'd actually believe it offers less. But users are already there for other reasons.

I do not know how much the ban of Russia has affected the decline in interest in the tournament, but this year Russia could have the strongest squad after Buffalo 2011.

F: Michkov, Miroshnichenko, Yurov, Buchelnikov, Svechkov, Chibrikov, Fedotov, Grebyonkin, Neuchev, Demidov, Poltapov, Yarovoy, Trikozov, Petrov, Ivantsov, Vinogradov, Perevalov.
D: Mintyukov, Yevseyev, Duda, Gulyayev, Grudinin, Orlov, Novikov, Koromyslov, Kudryavtsev, Komarov, Simashev.

Funny, those people who say that these teenagers should not play in the tournament because they are Russians are happy to wait for them in their franchise system.
That's a strong, strong team probably much better than Team Canada and any of the others for sure

Perhaps the whole sport is in decline. Even in Canada games like basketball and especially soccer are making progress at the expense of hockey.

As for Russia, is there any sport which hasn't banned them? Tennis, yes, but that isn't a team sport.

Russia knows how to get themselves unbanned from international sport. Why is it the sport authorities who should budge?

We have a three page thread about how the tourney sucks and no one cares. It's the same as it's always been. Some of our older posters have gotten old and other things mean more... some have passed away. the new generations are not as interested in these types of forms.

Tourney is actually ultra competitive... Just look back year by year.

True. Young generation doesn't care much about hockey, let alone a juniors tournament. The older generation who gave TSN their glory days are old now and probably have other things to do.

The main story from this year's tournament is with Czechia and Slovakia entering a new golden generation, the tournament is the best it's ever been, except of course for the absence of Russia... Now hockey has 9 legit countries (the mains ones + Czechia, Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland) so international hockey should be the best it's ever been now. And that's good news for hockey and hockey fans in general.

Well, the only actual thing is the app, but Reddit is a garbage place with garbage people and we’re all smarter for being here instead of there. And probably better off with most of them staying there.

Boy did this post age well as we find out that Reddit just happened to be the center point of the whole Idaho 4 murder thing. What a nasty place.

When it comes to the amount of discussion (or lack of) specific to HFBoards though, I think the biggest reason is probably the fact Internet Message Boards in general are in steady decline. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if traffic/activity on this board is down significantly from whatever and whenever its peak was.

This is absolutely true. Twitter is really where a lot of people converse, moreso than message boards anymore. Can't say that type of platform works for me. I'm too wordy and like to keep things topical (lol, as the words I post above this quote entirely contradict that statement). I think if you look at where the majority of Vegas and Kraken fans converse, message boards aren't the place. You'll find most of them on Twitter because that was the place to chat with folks online when those teams were born, where the rest all existed (or would VERY soon) when HF was born and message boards were the most popular way for people to chat online.

It’s probably IIHF having the hero complex like people in the western world have these days. Everybody needs to make a stand and be a hero for whatever their cause is that day. However, it could also be that Russian hockey refused to allow its players to play under a neutral banner.
Doubt it, they allowed it for the Olympics twice even without NHLers

Reddit has alot of downsides and circlejerking but one thing at least is the troll takes get send to the shadow realm pretty quick (I speak only for hockey), unlike hfboards where they thrive and multiply. Most mainboard threads on hf get derailed by the end of the first page and it's probably a no go for a lot of people because of it.

With that said I much prefer hfboards in general.
I think I personally am hugely in favour of message board format but that part about the crap takes being wiped away sounds ok.

I gotta ask.. for the reddit hockey people... are posters allowed to come on the hockey boards and talk about Putin, the Gulf war, war crimes, free russia, Ukraine, Bush?

I'm being serious... is that a thing on reddit international hockey boards? If so, I may suggest to a few posters that think HF rules suck and call it communist. Again, being serious.

On any unmoderated hockey board, and I have been following international tournaments religiously with fans around the world on the inter webs since the late 90s and early 2000s, every hockey discussion would inevitably devolve into chest thumping about WW II.

So it’s not as if the Ukraine conflict has really changed very much.

I'll take trolls over circle jerking echo chambers any day. Never any meaningful discussions on that garbage site.

As for the OP question. No Russia must be the biggest factor. For me personally, I'm just sick of TSN and their bias. Ruh ruh Canada is the best is not exciting

Reddit is such a bad place for any kind of discussion, I don't get how people go there for it

The upvoting system ensures all you have is vanilla, lame comments at the top. It's all neutral statements like "GG Saberbros, you guys have a bright future" lmao. How do you have any kind of interesting or meaningful debate on a platform that will downvote any unpopular opinion

Also, the demographic is very homogeneous there. One of the cool aspects of HF is the diversity in age, experience, and viewpoints on the game. You have your analytic diehards, you have your old school posters, your homers etc.

Here is the rules to the subreddit r/hockey

The activity decline may be correlated with the new ad scheme. I find it impracticable to use this forum via mobile, the ads crash by browser too often.

It is heart breaking not to be able to see Bedard and Michkov go head to head

Is Bedard comparable to McDavid? better?

...who would you compare Fantilli to?
