Ftr . My first ever post here was on a Canada vs Czech thread. The first reply was commenting on my grammar and I was told to learn English. I am positive I had a higher education than the poster saying that.lol

The second post was yelling at me for having the audacity of posting on a Canada thread. It was a game day thread.lol.

I've obviously become a big fan of the regular Canuck posters since then and figured it out.
Shame you had a bad first experience here. I like to see what people from all over the world has to say and as long as I can understand them, the grammar is not what matters at all. I make a lot of grammar mistakes but I don't care since my English is good enough so people can understand me in everyday talks on voice chat for example with a lot of English people. No one has ever complained about my language which I'm happy about.

Day 1.lol That poster got an earful!haha It was before I knew I could get reported.lol Lucikly I didn't because I went off.

You're actually one of my fav posters... I read you don't post as much anymore. Shame. Your Finn's are at their peak! You should have lots to say. The Finn argument is compelling right now.

I love the WJC more than any other sporting event of the year but it seems to have lost its luster when it's always in Canada. There is something about the games being at odd times (i.e. Ufa 2013) that adds to its appeal, especially when people are off at this time of year. I hope it never goes west again, and keep it out of the GTA/Buffalo for at least another decade.
When you have a tournament of 10 teams where realistically only 5 can win, removing one is a big let down (hoping the Czech Republic can fill this void). Any tournament without Russia will have an asterisk beside it whether people like to admit it or not.

This post illustrates why the World Chanpionships don’t hold the same appeal in North America (always held in Europe aside from 2008) and why the Soviet Union’s accomplishments in the days of the Big Red Machine will have an asterisk beside them whether people like to admit it or not.

I think the skill gap is a thing. Hard to gauge the talent when games are ending 11-0. Should get more interesting when the playoffs start. But I must say I used to think this tournament was much higher level, but the recent nhl struggles of u20 dominant players have definitely made me question it's value to evaluating prospects. The defensive game and goaltending is just so far from NHL play.

Lafreniere absolutely dominated the u20, but hasn't quite made it in the nhl yet. Mason McTavish's incredible u20 performance just recently has only translated to 6 nhl goals so far. For reference back when Matthews was going a goal / game pace in the u20 he put up 40 goals the next year in the NHL.
This is simply not true. The glory days of this tournament (roughly 04' - 11') saw Canada beat Kazakhstan 15-0. There are always minnows.

This + the complete embarrassment/fiasco of cancelling it last year.

This is true but if Czechs sneak in a Bronze, I will go streaking 'Old School' style!

I’ve noticed the decline and it saddens me. Though some of the varied reasons that people have mentioned all play their part, I just think this mostly has to do with a fatigue that sets in for social media. I only come on here at World Junior time, so that keeps things pretty fresh for me, but others simply burn out from rehashing the same arguments over the years. There are some new people on here and some of the veterans that are around are still hardcore.
Same. Hfboards is a Christmas tradition for me lol.

and Czechoslovakian accomplishments too. 'Amateurs'.lol

FTR.. hockey has never been close to perfect. I can't think of a sport with a worse international presence...

let.s see

No best on best since 2014

Last 3 were cancelled - 2018, 2022 and 2024

World Juniors are always missing the best Juniors because they are in NHL.. eg, no Slafkovsky for Slovakia is a HUGE loss... I'm positive Canada has 3 or 4 guys in NHL right now, same with States.. same with Sweden. So this isn't a best on best.

U18 in April has none of the best CHLer's but the abssolute best americans

Skoda cup is missing everyone, only in Europe. (My fav tourney by far ftr but not because I think it means who is the best, I just love it)

Then Hlinka has the best Canadians but not the best Americans

NO Russia in any of them and they are always a contender

The closest to a best on best we have today is the U17 challenge and that has 4 Canada's and no Russia.lol

Hockey is bad at international.

Most of the crankiness on display here (and not just on the WJC threads) is because people think everything was better back then. What "then" is depends on how old you are. Mostly people love to hang on to whatever glory days they remember and they think everything that isn't from that time period sucks.

This tournament is more or less what it has always been. Yeah, I loved getting up early to watch tournaments from Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union, because it was a big deal then too. Sure, TSN made it into a bit of a bigger deal, but at the end of the day, it's still a bunch of kids chasing a black rubber disc around an ice rink and as entertaining as it sometimes is, it has almost no bearing on the world. It sucks when my team loses. Then I have a nice piece of chocolate and I feel better.

And Russia is always welcome back at this tournament, just as soon as it ... well, that's heading down verboten territory. I'd be Putin jail if I said more.

Its funny to think that Canada can lose to Sweden and Czechia and still win gold.
Patrik Elias made this comment on TSN awhile ago.. win the pool, lose the pool.. doesn't matter because your quarter final opponent will be a big 5 and you have to beat one. We all know the Czech win was a bit of a fluke thing. I'll take it.. I may celebrate it annually but let's not kid ourselves here. The rematch is not one I crave.lol

I agree, at the end of the day, placement doesn't matter unless you somehow get Slovakia / Switzerland in the quarters. If Canada beats Sweden, they will likely play Slovakia.

Since we're on Gord.. if he calls it the 'Hasek years' one more time, I will lose it.lol

We won Nagano, 3 worlds and 2 WJHC in 5 years... Hasek was on one of those teams yet I have to hear this Hasek years bullshit every year.lol He didn't play the Juniors gord! He was in the NHL. He didn't go to a Skoda Cup after Nagano!!!! I did the math.. 6 golds and 6 different goalies.. respect our run because it was legendary.

We have a three page thread about how the tourney sucks and no one cares. It's the same as it's always been. Some of our older posters have gotten old and other things mean more... some have passed away. the new generations are not as interested in these types of forms.

Tourney is actually ultra competitive... Just look back year by year.

Hockey is bad at international.

You either have a choice to be miserable about it or just acknowledge the shortcomings and try to enjoy the hockey.

The Spengler Cup is refreshing because it’s pure entertainment with no bragging rights on the line leading to all kinds of rustled jimmies.

I love this tourney (flaws aside) but the Slovak story is not done.. they have the Swiss and Latvia and a scalp against the US. They can still finish first! I'll be watching and cheering.

My big fear is that it'll be Czech vs Slovak quarter.. it's like kissing your pretty cousin.lol

That win will do more for those kids than people will ever understand. Rematch outcome not withstanding

10 years and no back to back champ. That is parity. It is NO ONES game. But, Canada is the fav for a back to back here. That is a huge storyline here.

It'll help Czech hockey too as they win and more scouts look at what's going on.. maybe a goalie like Suchanek gets a contract or PTO or redrafted. Same for Szturc. Maybe they notice our D is on the rise and a few lesser D get taken in later rounds. Brings attention to us and that is good because I don't think scouts spend much time looking at us (rightfully so).

Nothing a good bench-clearing brawl couldn’t cure!
The good news about having the tourney here (again) is that viewing times are easily manageable for us.
Definitely missing the Russian team for rivalries and interest sake, but I accept the reason. And our nearest rivals - USA - doesn’t spark much interest this tourney.
Keep the faith…applaud politely….dream of better times.
