The tournaments have been great. competitive with some intrigue. what happens on HF. the twitter of the hockey world is largely irrelevant.
^^ Yup. ^^

Lots of posters have left HF because...

1) The discussions on these boards are (often) poison.

2) Mods are far from even handed / fair - I do not mean CzechBoy who does a terrific job in the International thread.

3) Many posters stay within their team bubbles to avoid trolls and arguments that go on and on and on.

I, for one, come back for International tournaments and then log off for months.

I guess as seeing the difference between the teams we can forget the talk about expanding the number of teams in the competition.

Maybe it has dawned on more people that it is a TSN cash cow where they pump out rah rah Canadiana propaganda and it really means nothing since a relatively small percentage of players there ever amount to anything compared to all the pomp and circumstance TSN whips up.
Yeah I had that realization about 20 years ago but it takes time to see the scam. Honestly it's entertaining hockey but the hype is just too much.

It was the scandal for me.

Because of what they did, I ponder if some of these players have the same character and it really turns me off.

I'm not sure if this subject is permitted on this forum, but surely this would be the best place for it.

Anyway, it's not awfully long ago when this tournament was debated here in such a lively fashion - match threads were long and colourful and side subject threads were constantly opened and debated. Now, well, this... Anemic and lack lustre. I'm well aware that newer forms of social media have led to a partial demise of forums but this change here seems exceptionally sudden and steep. What could be the explanation? Less interest in Canada? Certainly also much less European fans here than there used to be. In any case quite unfortunate, this subforum for this tournament is a shadow of its old self.
Many of the battles are done on social media.

For me, I just hate how a lot of people (aka TSN and most casual Canadian fans) take this tournament seriously. I usually end up watching more games that include Canuck prospects than Canadian games. Even then, I don't use it as a tool to claim someone was a steal or a bust, the next Gretzky or the next Daigle. Just see how their game compares to kids their age.

Nowadays, I usually cheer against Canada because of our success and to soak in all the salt that comes from the Canadian fans who take it seriously, unless they start threatening and abusing the teenage hockey players, those people can just F off.

I liked the tournament a lot more when I was much younger, and they were held in junior towns and cities in Canada or in seemingly remote hamlets in Scandinavia (and I had to get up at 4am to watch the games). TSN coverage was professional and informative, but didn’t overhype the Canadian players (Lindros aside) or team. It was a fun little tournament you’d watch with family and friends over the holidays and an opportunity to see some prospects in action, and now it’s much more than that and the vibe, at least on TV, seems kind of… I don’t know, weird?. I thought it was really odd how hard the crowd cheered last night as Canada racked up the goals against a hapless Austria team.

The hockey is a lot more competitive now though.

When Canada went on a run of 5, it really helped build interest...

Canadians were interested because it felt good to see the kids dominate. They also wanted to see how many we'd win before it ended.

Other countries tuned in, hoping to see their team knock off the dynasty.

It’s kind of sad seeing all this negativity. I’ve watched pretty much every game and it’s been great. I don’t know how people can complain about the lack of good teams when the top dogs have lost to Czechia, Slovakia, and Switzerland already, with Czechia in particular looking like a gold medal contender for the first time in a while. It’s just so poorly timed and makes it seem like the complaints are coming from people who aren’t even watching. Would it be better with Russia? Sure, but how can you fixate so much on Russia not being there that it completely ruins your mood and makes you not want to watch?

And it’s not just this year that there are upsets. Czechia knocked out USA in the quarters last year, Switzerland knocked out Sweden in 2019, Czechia knocked out Finland in 2018. And there are upsets in the round robin every year too.

Also it seems that one of the biggest things people are complaining about is the “hype” from other people, and I just don’t get it… why let other people ruin a good tournament for you. I don’t even see how the “hype” ruins it, it seems pretty normal and it would be weird if there wasn’t any, but to each his own

Maybe a lot of people have cut the cord?

Imagine if the WJC was on CBC.

What was viewership like for the World Cup? (soccer/football)

That was all on TSN also right?

I'm just talking from a Canadian point of view. Was it easy to watch either of these tournaments if you were semi-interested but not looking for a cable package or signing up to whatever the newest streaming service is?

And yeah there is just so much more going on, such as we are just about to get into the good part of the WJC, so let's wait and see.

Shame you had a bad first experience here. I like to see what people from all over the world has to say and as long as I can understand them, the grammar is not what matters at all. I make a lot of grammar mistakes but I don't care since my English is good enough so people can understand me in everyday talks on voice chat for example with a lot of English people. No one has ever complained about my language which I'm happy about.
Grammar complaints are particularly hilarious considering it's a second language and the poster complaining about grammar can probably only speak one

2009/2010 were peak WJC years (for me anyway)

Might have been because the Leafs had nothing to look forward to so spent more time watching junior hockey

TSN is responsible for blowing this tournament up way beyond what it should be. Having it in Canadian NHL cities over and over killed a lot of the excitement for me. We need it in Europe way more. It should be in Canada every third year or so and only in smaller cities. Halifax/Moncton is a good start.

Russia being rightfully excluded hurts the excitement but that won't go on forever.

Same for me, exactly. Also just getting older .. new more important things require my attention and I only have so much mental energy to go around.

I do not know how much the ban of Russia has affected the decline in interest in the tournament, but this year Russia could have the strongest squad after Buffalo 2011.

F: Michkov, Miroshnichenko, Yurov, Buchelnikov, Svechkov, Chibrikov, Fedotov, Grebyonkin, Neuchev, Demidov, Poltapov, Yarovoy, Trikozov, Petrov, Ivantsov, Vinogradov, Perevalov.
D: Mintyukov, Yevseyev, Duda, Gulyayev, Grudinin, Orlov, Novikov, Koromyslov, Kudryavtsev, Komarov, Simashev.

Funny, those people who say that these teenagers should not play in the tournament because they are Russians are happy to wait for them in their franchise system.
They will may be needed to fill vacant Moblik spots.

Not only not having Russia is a factor but its rather predictable how things are going to pan out regardless of earlier games

I liked it when it was at other European cities, you would see other fans and watch games early mornings

Now it's like same time as any chl games at chl arenas. If I wanted that I would watch chl games

Not to mention after like 3 or 4 teams there's a massive drop in competition

I gotta ask.. for the reddit hockey people... are posters allowed to come on the hockey boards and talk about Putin, the Gulf war, war crimes, free russia, Ukraine, Bush?

I'm being serious... is that a thing on reddit international hockey boards? If so, I may suggest to a few posters that think HF rules suck and call it communist. Again, being serious.
No, the mods are seriously all over it on any thread. Even if they don't warn you, they delete and edit the threads later.

I've gotten clamped down on by trollstomper pretty hard and have had to avoid threads and discussions like that on this board now. Humans everywhere do have different opinions after all.
