Anyone saying he doesn't deserve to be in the HoF is either out to lunch or projecting what they think the HoF should be onto what it is. 2 first team all stars, a 100 point season, a cup, and likely 1000 career points for a career through the 2010s. I'd lean no on first ballot, but I don't think it will take very long after.

In the end, those are a 15 year snapshot for the history of the NHL and Marchand was one of the very best players over that stretch.
But that's my point, over that 15 year stretch I'm not sure I'd say he was one of the best goal scorers. Yes, he's 5th overall for that stretch, but that's because the period is completely biased to him vs. other players who didn't play during that full 15 year period. So, looking at that entire 15 year period, while cumulatively, he's 5th in goals, he only finished top 5 in goals in 1 of those seasons, finished 6th in 2 others and then 17th and 18th are the next highest....then 20 something, 30 something, etc. That's all I'm saying here.

I hear you in saying his peak in that area isnt something to look at and he's more of a compiler but the fact hes been consistantly good in that area and tends to score them in big moments are his strengths there. Him being first for OT, GWG and PK goals make him pretty special IMO. I think he'll be appreciated more once he retires.

He is 106th in goals all time, 147th in assists, 115th in points.

He is also on the wrong side of 30, so those numbers reallly are not improving that much more.

Gotta judge players on their era and not penalize them for playing in a tougher era to score.

Adjusting for era, Marchand is sitting 58th for goals scored and 84th for points via hockey ref. He gonna climb over a ton of guys above him too.

Looking at probably the best attempt at coming up with a system to judge a players HHOF worthiness, adjusted hockeys PPS system has him already well established as one of the top 50 forwards to have played the game.

Not a likable character in many ways but turning out to be one of the more underrerated players ever.

1st ballot isn't a real thing in hockey. This isn't baseball where it's a recorded accomplishment and voters explicitly take it into account when inducting players.

He's making into the hall. But half the voters don't even know about 1st ballot distinction. I know Americans are desperate for it to exist, but the HHOF just isn't Cooperstown despite how much you want it to be.
I like how @jigglysquishy correctly pointed out, on page 1, that there is no such thing as a "1st ballot Hall of Famer" in hockey... and then we have six more pages of people saying he is / isn't a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

In my view, he's definitely getting in the Hall of Fame at some point. The issue of when depends on the strength of competition year by year. Marchand, while an almost-certain Hall of Famer, isn't the kind of player who's automatically near the top of the voter-lists as soon as he's eligible. So, in a weaker year, he could get in in his first-year of eligibility, but in a tougher period, he'd have to wait.

He hasn't even scored 1000 points, and individually, he's just not on that level. If he's a first ballot HoFer, then the HoF has undergone serious inflation. Not every franchise player needs to be there.

Alex Mogilny is just missing the cup. and he is not in. People thinking he is slam dunk for the hall are of their collective rockers

Mogilny and Thomas are way more deserving than he is and they're not in.

He’s 100% getting in. Let’s not kid ourselves.

I think some already retired players deserve to get in before him but he’s worthy.

The Alex Mogilny situation is a fair comparison and I will add Theo Fluery to the mix. Looks at his numbers and he has a cup win as well--but he is not in. Anyone who is saying Marchand get is should also being saying both Mogilny and Theo should be in

He needs not to be a 24-carat douchebag.
4xtop ten in scoring is not enough for a first ballot HOFer. He had some good years and I think placed Selke top ten once. He's an agitator and won a cup. That's good enough to get you on the plane but he's not flying first class.

I was shitfaced when I made that post last night. I had finally finished moving. You reminded me I made it and I regret it. I was the douchebag.

He'll get in because of the narratives and the franchise he plays for. Deserves it as well.

But put in Mogilny, Elias and Zetterberg first, who were all better.
