This has not been an organization that hands several forward spots to middling forward prospects at the start of an NHL season because it doesn't have to. The bottom 6 will be mostly sourced from outside the organization this summer. And the forward prospects will be forced to earn a role.

I'm tired of seeing these players dismissed as irrelevant. One or two better versions of Engvall/Simmonds/Clifford/Blackwell/Spezza may have been enough to win that 1st round series. I thought you thought the team was really close to winning that playoff series.

I just think they need to graduate Steeves or Robertson to that second line spot. Take advantage of the ELC’s
They definitely need to leave a spot somewhere in the line up (let how the kids play determine which spot that is.. 2LW 4RW etc) but they need to have a spot open for Steeves Anderson Robertson holmberg or whoever else’s wants to compete in camp to take hold of. If no one’s capable then go shopping, there’s always forwards available.

While we have barely picked in the first round since we drafted Lily, other teams like the Wings and Sens have been picking in the top 8. At some point they may catch up to our good team like the Rangers and Panthers have since we lost to Washington.
We’ve picked in the first round in 3/5 drafts (Iilly sandin Amirov) and came away with Robertson and Knies in the other two drafts where we didn’t have a first.
Cry more about it.

Goalies are part of the team. Having elite goaltending is a good thing.
Leafs have he current Hart winner, and NYR had only one of the 3 finalists in their goalie so we win.

However NYR and EDM Hart finalists runner ups as MVP carried their teams to the final 4 in the playoffs.

Perhaps Cap management is the reason for this, and with Leafs having so limited cap space available makes this much more difficult to allocate < $7 mil among 4-5 players to fill out the roster including the need for a starting goalie and not even an MVP goalie like Shershkin.

Dubas should spend the $7 mil so the Leafs make the final 4 in the playoffs at least, and not simply declare better because of regualr season records. IMO

It's a total sellers market for goalies with demand far exceeding supply. More like Campbell is going to make Dubas his b****.

That's actually what I meant. Signing Campbell is the best decision in terms of asset management. Dubas would have his tail in-between his legs, lol,

That 2LW slot is a big hole. You can’t just fill it with whatever piece. Knies could fit, but he’s the only ELC player we have that could possibly be used there.

No, I said Rangers didn't pass us despite being carried by one of the best goalie performances of the cap era.

If goalies are part of the team, it doesn’t matter if they carry them.

I don’t know what he’ll do, but it’s safe to say this is his last kick at the can.

My guess is he’ll trade Mrazek and an asset to sign Campbell, maybe Engvall, and then fill the roster with Marlies.

He may want to get Sandin signed or moved before FA starts or he could get an OS.

First thing to do is increase that cap number.

shipping out Kerfoot and Mrazek should be first priority. If you are going to actually play Liljegren and Sandin, then you can move out Holl as well. The 3 departing players, while decent, make a total of over 9 million and would not be missed.

goaltending is job 1. no more gambles, think we need to find a team thinking about rebuilding/retooling that might move a starter. Campbell is gone unless he wants to be backup for sub 3 million which I doubt.

given the tight cap I might roll the dice on Kase again for cheap. probably won't make it to postseason healthy, but he's a pretty decent middle 6 winger when he is. that's a spot I'm definitely trying to upgrade though. Engvall gave us 35 points this season, he should be able to fill a 3rd line role at a reasonable cost.

Assume Mikheyev walks, his spot gets taken by Robertson. need to give this kid some extended games.

they need a 3C that can create some offence and score. at least compared to Kampf, who doesn't have enough skill for that spot. he's fine as a 4C with added defensive duties as required. Simmonds and Clifford are Marlies and emergency subs next season. the Leafs need to find a couple of wingers for Kampf that can give the line a solid identity besides "not hurt you defensively". I didn't mind Blackwell, but feel he is too small to play the role he was trying to play here. guess we'll see what Dubas thought. But going back to the drawing board on the 4th line is a good idea. it needs to give us something and I don't feel like it did much in 21/22. bottom line is they need more goals in the playoffs from the 3rd/4th line. Matthews and Marner are good enough to carry them in regular season but later on against elite goalies and defence you need every single play possible from all 4 lines to win.

on defence it's strong without the puck as long as Brodie doesn't slip and Muzzin doesn't slip any further. depth should be fine with some combination of Liljegren/Holl/Sandin/Gio taking bottom 3 minutes. Ideally I'd like to see 1 of the defence-only guys replaced with more of a 2-way presence. for a 115 point team that was an awfully low scoring blueline group last year.

Why $7 million? The summer just started. Lot's of time for moves.

I see the 'voice of reason' has abandoned that ruse.....
As of this moment. I agree there is plenty of time to work with. I don't think anyone is saying that Kyle is running out of time before the draft and free agency.

It is worth discussing what he might do and his priorities. Possibly who he might cut loose to have more flexibility.

The goalie is big for me and many here. Campbell might price himself out of TOR. Dubas is left with Mrazek, Källgren, Woll. I certainly think he has to do something in this circumstance.

I am wondering if there is another goalie option outside of our (the fans) radar. Like a disgruntled goalie, a recently drafted talented goalie prospect, a backup goalie who might work well as a starter. Someone who is not: MAF, Gibson, Russo, Kueper, Campbell, Varlamov, Blackwood, Price, etc. Toronto's front office must have a few in mind that might completely surprise us (I hope).

That’s why I said that it would be up to the player to determine which spot. There will be more cap space generated via trades.
I think they sign/acquire one decent to good forward (Paul, Perron, Kubalik, palat? ) to fill the 2hole and one or two guys for the bottom 6 and let the kids compete for a bottom 6 spot to round out the line up.
Maybe Sandin gets flipped for a comparable young forward/ prospect who’s blocked/stagnated in their situation and that guy gets a crack in the middle of the line up. (Morgan Frost? Comtois?)

I’m hoping Dubas saw what kind of bottom 6 he should be building. Unfortunately, that type of lineup isn’t built with the kinds of ELC players we have. Anderson could fit on the 4th line. Robertson might work on the 4th.

We still need a big body on the 2nd line and a physical shut down winger for the 3rd line.

I don’t think Knies is an option this year.
Like it or not, we can’t afford a much more decent option than Kerfoot at the price.

Bunting…Matthews…Marner
Kerfoot…JT…Nylander
Already $ accounted for top 6.

Priority is goalie and then fill out the rest.

They finna get rid of some players. SO then they haveth more than 7 millions. We are going into the next season with even more harder players, stronger and people that scare other human beings around. People like wilson, reaves or kassian. I know this as a fact. We just have to see whom we'll be getting this summer. Even more than these, these are just examples I put up there. We will get a new goalie and some new D-men, even that harder punch up guy for the forwards. We are putting out a team who will hurt others if they look at us differently or too long.

Dubas' ego/reputation has already taken a hit with the Kadri trade, Kerfoot is the only thing left to show for it. But honestly, if Kerfoot is on this team, then we won't have enough money to truly improve our team. Besides, he stinks like that week-old mystery leftover from a month ago in the back of the fridge. And dummmmbbbb as a bag of rocks (see Game 6 penalties).

Good post but the bolded is a bit of a headscratcher

Trade kerfoot + Holl thats another 5.4

Bribe someone to take Marzak by giving up a 2'd + Prospect. another 3.8 .

Now 9.2 + 6.4 = 15.8 Its a start all replaceable players for much cheeper

Rumor out of Chicago is Mrzek is headed there, they are currently too good to get a high pick next year (Bedard) and too bad to make the playoffs. Rumor is Dach, Toews, DeBrinkat and Kane are all on the move in the off season.

Just remember the list of players who don't play the right way or can't win with them and then do is massive. People shut up about it, pretend it was never a narrative, etc. We went through this with Kessel and Bozak as an example that isn't Kadri as he's been talked about to death.

To address the thread the team will:

- Add a starting goalie
- The core forwards being in their primes will ensure the team keeps in a divisional spot. This is where the most growth potential is for the post season.
- At least 1 blockbuster trade to bring in a top 6 forward

The rest will all be small moves, retooling the 4th line, re-signing some of our RFAs. I think the goal will be to have 3 scoring lines this season and a heavy 4th line. I would expect that Dubas brings in a goalie and forward this offseason, and for the most part we go with ELC's and stuff for depth. He will then try and bolster the depth at the TDL instead of adding top 6 or 4 players who cost a ton. Add players who cost 2nds and less but provide character and such.

We had one of the best scoring performances of the cap era, 2nd highest in the 2000's. AO had 65 goals in 82 games, Auston had 60 in 73 games. One could say AM carried the Leafs. Team is a sum of its parts, you take the best part out of any team and they go from being an excellent team to an average or bad team pretty quickly.
