Miller-Pettersson-Boeser
Pearson-Horvat-Virtanen/Baertschi

I dunno... I think we still need more to make the playoffs...

If Miller can complete that first line even in a complimentary role that would be a big step. I think we need a legit skill player for the second line.

Unless Bo takes a huge step playmaking wise that 2nd line lacks someone who can distribute the puck and create offense.

I know they have talked about the duos but I wouldn't be surprised if they give this a shot
Pearson-Pettersson-Boeser
Miller-Horvat-Leivo/Virtanen
I think that balances out the skills of each player better.

It is easy to be a hater. If things go badly you get to claim wonderful insight. If things go well one gets to celebrate the successes with the rest of us. It is easy being a critic. This is why people love the underdog. It is a win/win situation. No risk.

And this team is stages better than the previous several years. We have plenty to be positive about. We had no Pettersson, Hughes or Boeser 4~5 years ago. We had the aging Sedin twins and not much else. If you cannot see the sun breaking through those clouds then I suggest your not looking in the right direction. Try looking north instead of south. The last 5 years has proven nothing in regards to the future.

Funny, I tend to think it’s harder to be critical and easier to just view everything through a “well THE BOSS knows better than me” lens. There’s a certain appeal to just abdicating your agency to someone else and assuming it will all work out. I know my kids are much happier thinking mom and dad are infallible and that we never make mistakes. Growing up is hard.

I agree, we need a lot more. Baertschi has never been able to stay healthy for a full season and Virtanen is way too inconsistent to play regularly in the top 6. There's possibly Leivo, but I'm not very confident on that line producing over the course of the regular season.
I will take a fly at Nyquist or Dzingle, both underperformed after the TDL. Should be able to get them relatively cheaper

Gee Dad, one day I want to be as insightful and objectively critical like you. What’s abdicating dad?

Agree. Except I never claimed the trade to be a win. I claimed that as of today it is a win. With a chance it becomes a crippling loss. But as of today... It is indeed a win. The team is better today than it was yesterday. The future may change that but the future is unpredictable. This is not a "Boss knows best" defense nor looking through rose coloured glasses.

Disagree on it being harder to be a critic. Just look at Politics. The opposition always has great ideas until they gain power. Then they tend to disappoint just like the previous regime. Not that critics don't have value. Management should be held to task. And for the most part I think Benning and co are.

It's a pretty dry FA market though, I'd still expect a certain degree of overpayment if the Canucks were to be successful signing either of those players in term and/or dollars.

Hate the deal but like the player! He’s a legit top 6 forwards. Pretty dumb some are calling him a “3rd liner” or “middle 6 forward”. How many 3rd liners in the NHL get over 40 points let alone the 50 he gets? Not many

Politics isn’t sports. Running a country is a complex balancing act of competing constituent interests. Running an NHL team generally just requires a GM to make more good moves than bad ones. Fan’s motives aren’t all that complex and typically all run in the same direction.

Being a critic requires guarding against the easy complacency of just liking everything your favorite team does. Every Canuck is the best ever. Every Oiler / Flame / Non Canuck is the worst ever. It’s easy and fun. It’s the opioid addiction of fandom. Personally I don’t find being critical fun or enjoyable and that actually plays into why I took a 7-month break from this place. I came back for the draft talk and because I do enjoy getting into fair debates with fans that have different but rationally-based viewpoints. But it is time consuming and based on the early returns of the summer I am probably going to take another sabbatical soon.

Anyway, we can each demonize the other side til the cows come home I guess. There’s really no winning or solving this type of debate, just increasingly veiled digs at each other.

Realistically, i think we've got a decent complementary Top-9 winger

I don't know about the trade either but people need to stop with this "third liner" stuff. He's been averaging 50pts a year over the last four years. That is unambiguously a top 6 forward in the NHL, not "top 9". There are almost no 50 pt players getting regular third line deployment unless they're on ridiculously stacked teams...the league simply isn't that deep and scoring simply isn't that high.

I don't want to run from this conversation but I have a 6 year old that is about to chew my arm off if I don't feed him. Appreciate the convo CanaFan. Hopefully in 2 years we can rehash this while celebrating a strong playoff run. Or alternatively, You can chase me down the street with a cleaver shouting "I told you so you rat b*stard!" I, for one, hope I am right and you are... well... not right.

Yeah his production is definitely top 6. That he was on TB's bottom six doesn't mean he'll play that role for us. Clearly they're looking for a big retriever and distributor for EP and Boeser.

Overpaid though. I would have offered Juolevi and a 2nd, 3rd.

What is inexcusable is that TB was a team in clear cap trouble. They had to move Miller to sign Point. Totally poor GM and negotiating skills to give a desperate team a 1st round pick while solving their cap problems.

DOH Jim this is not what they they mean when they say weaponize your cap space!

It matters not what Tampa’s situation is if there are other teams interested. If Canucks were the only interested party, then they should have made a better deal. If others were interested, then they are in competition.

I think Miller also opens up new line possibilities. I'm interested to see if Green moves Boeser to another line because we have another 50 point winger. We have Sutter who can be used primarily for a defensive/shutdown line, we could use Horvat as a 2nd offensive line with Boeser.

All good. 6 month olds are nasty business when left unattended too long. Or at least mine were. Good luck :thumbu:

Agreed.

They have been talking up the EP-Boeser and Pearson-Horvat duos, but with Miller in the mix now I hope they move Pearson up with EP and Boeser and pair up Miller with Horvat.

Stevie Y traded for Miller.

5:12PM: The Rangers have officially announced that they have traded JT Miller and Ryan McDonagh to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a package that includes:
  • 2018 First Round Pick
  • Vladislav Namestnikov
  • Brett Howden
  • Libor Hajek
  • Conditional First Round Pick in 2019

First round sweep embarrassment notwithstanding, Tampa is a hell of a team.

I trust Stevie Y’s pro scouting.

I’m good with Miller.

He also traded for Jason Garrison.:sarcasm: Good trade by Benning to get a 2nd round pick for a guy with a NTC (with his bad groin).

Don’t have to Trust Stevie y. Just look at Millers numbers and watch him play.

He’s a good player

Can't look just at Millers number because they don't accurately reflect his offensive potential (they've got a deep forward roster that cause him to be burried further down their roster).

(don't say I never say anything positive about a Benning acquisition. :naughty:).

I know that.

You know that.

Fans that only watch the Canucks and have endured years and years of emotional abuse from Canucks management and ownership don’t know that.
