All this talk about electric cars and self-driving human transport pods (not "cars", okay?) makes me sad.

I'm pretty sure my next car is going to have a huge wing on it (ie., STI or Type R). Oh yeah.

self driving 18 wheelers are already on the road . UPS uses them between Tucson and Phoenix. Until the systems are perfected a man is on board but the day is already here . Check on UTube and you can see lots of companies and videos on robotic trucking . Pretty interesting . All kinds of GPS etc etc on board.

Yeah, I've seen those and think they're really interesting. I'm waiting for the point where 90%+ of the vehicles on the road are self driving and are capable/reliable enough to be on the road without human assistance and can avoid shitty human drivers.

I'm not quite sure how close we are to that. Self-driving human transport pods is definitely what I'm interested in. The interior of the vehicles could change, the way we buy and own them can change, the way we travel for anything can change, traffic would change, it would be such a crazy leap in so many different ways.

The really tricky part is going to be the transition. Like when it's 50/50, etc..

Yep, I think the self-driving is pretty good right now that if they were the only things on the road it'd be viable (in many locations anyway). With so many humans behind the wheel, I'm not so sure we've worked out all the kinks.

You ,You,You, finance managers are the Devil in disguise and you know it .

the salesman will say “ ok now congrats on your say $30,000 car ,you got a great deal” then You visit The Devil. As you walk out your but hurts and your not sure why. You turn back to look at the finance Manager and poof he is gone . Just some smoke and the smell of burning wood . But I’m sure CaptDenis is not like that . LGI

no I never had a bad finance experience . Almost once but escaped , re booted and started over with the guy.

HAHA ....yeah finance managers can def be like that but not me :D (and I like the smell of burning wood).

50/50

half the lanes moving at the same speed never stopping and the other half still at a standstill and texting while the light changes from green to yellow and back to red . I would want one of the fake robot drivers like in the Men In Black movie . When you don’t need him / her back into the steering wheel ya go.

Wow, so don’t expect to go very far in this thing. So would you say a fuel or fuel/electric hybrid is still the way to go? Or are you happy with the car, the mileage, the performance, etc.
I am happy with the car. In fact, I love it. I'm fortunate that I can walk to work; so, I only drive about 5000 miles a year. When I travel far (+200 miles), the limited range adds to the journey: I'm plotting where I'll recharge, what's near the charging station, what should I do for the hour or more it takes to recharge.

My 2015 Leaf is outmoded technology today. The new generation of electric cars get +150 miles range.

what happens in the cold, your range is greatly reduced, no?

Ill never buy an electric car. never.

Bones, your concerns are all valid: range, charging time, and affordability are issues that need to be improved for the electric car to go from tree-hugger niche to the mainstream. I think the electric car just needs time. After +100 years of the internal combustion engine, we have probably maximized that technology to its near fullest extent. The batteries in electric cars are new and have plenty of room for improvement. Electricity is also abundant and relatively cheap.

In our lifetimes, we've witnessed plenty of shifts in technology (e.g. cassettes to CDs). I think EVs will be another one. It just might take a couple decades.

I'm no EV fanboy (far from it), but I think it's going to be a lot faster than a couple of decades. Most manufacturers are introducing a lot of EVs in the next few years (and will start eliminating ICE models), and they're getting closer to some battery breakthroughs, and then that will be it.

We are going to start seeing 500+ miles range Tesla’s in the next 2-3 years. Super chargers for the most part are everywhere.

that being said even at 300 mile range estimates your still adding 40-60 minutes onto a 6 hour road trip. Phoenix to Disneyland for example.

Have I mentioned that I hate my wife's guts?

Similar to solar panels -- same crap. Those panels are super expensive, ugly as all hell, and not nearly as efficient as they should be. Ill wait until 20never to get them installed.

I like the hybrid idea, where electrical helps out the combustion effort -- but ain't no chance of Bones driving a Prius or the sort.

And don't you need a 220 line to charge it (else it takes forever)?

I gotta go drive my 800hp Challenger.. brb.. :)

Even still, the now 7 hour trip feels like a breeze for the driver with the driving assistance. My Telluride won't drive for me, but on the highway it practically does. As the de facto driver of the fam, this is amazing and can only image the Tesla experience.
