Rumor: Werenski, CBJ to Meet about Future After the Draft

Necas wouldn’t agree to resign here . So they abandoned the trade
if that's the reason why don waddell didn't go through with the trade he is simply a coward and a loser deep in his soul, sorry.

necas was an RFA. they had endless cash and two years of runway to convince him to stay. worst case, they could flip him to recoup assets. and they would've made the playoffs both years.

the (extremely clear) opportunity cost of not doing it for fear of walking the player to UFA two years later is – quite literally – losing zach werenski.

Regardless, it appears that Waddell simply doesn't have the balls to pull off big acquisitions. Every time we hear "the price was too high".

Even this week, we heard, essentially, that he doesn't want to move KJ or Voronkov in any trade, so we're clearly not even attempting to big game hunt.
Be real, those two aren’t getting us an elite player back. Each had shitty seasons. It doesn’t make sense to trade them unless they have shown enough behind the scenes to believe they won’t bounce back

You think we were close enough to a cup to splash on a guy who wouldn't sign with us? I don't...

KJ has shown alot of progress so far for what little we have seen.

Voronov...uh...someone help me out here

Voronkov has looked pudgy in some photos. Again, I don't have the capacity to be like well I know better. I dont like seeing it but for a professional athlete standards ...

The fact its after the draft says alot. If it was before the draft its over...if its after then that destroys all Free agency planning and significantly pushes CBJ back. You can have Z pop in there saying "i want out" when the draft is this week and then you need to wait a year to develop those picks.

Nah this feels more damage control than anything else.
is there a single trade (or series of trades) that Juiceless Don Waddell is capable of pulling off between now and free agency that would improve the team significantly enough to convince zach to stay?

he'd need to expertly navigate the marketplace to get off of players' NTCs, or find guys who don't have NTCs, and actually win the bidding (they are not well-positioned to do so) all while stumbling upon a few gallons of juice that he did not previously possess.

no, the real reason why werenski is waiting until after the draft is because he wants to see if larkin gets dealt this weekend, so he can follow his buddy.

did i say necas would have won them a cup? no.

did chickening out of the necas trade cost them two playoff berths? yes.

did missing the playoffs those years limit their ability to attract talent? yes.

will those playoff misses also cost them werenski? remains to be seen but leaning that way.

the opportunity cost of not doing the move is essentially an entire competitive window; they are now back where they started, except they also botched the development of a few key young players and added a handful of boat anchor contracts along the way.

I get what you're saying, but this feels a bit of 2020 hindsight considering how Lindstrom is treading.

We would have been the laughing stock if we traded a top 5 pick for a guy who is clearly going to bounce.

The easy comeback to that is we're usually the laughing stock either way I guess.

...but if they wait after the draft there's not enough viable assets for that team to pull off that hypothetical trade after the draft.

That's the problem with all this superteam stuff.

I think this board is whipping itself into a frenzy over things we already know. Also in a society of how many clicks and likes can one get, the Friedman and other social posts are just that. If Z asks out it will suck but it's not like this fanbase isn't or wasn't aware that this is the progression of any top sports figure if their current situation isn't up to their liking or standard.

I'll wait to start yelling out of my window till there is some concrete evidence of the involved parties intentions.

I went to Ohio State. I like Columbus. May even retire in the area in a couple of years. But it is not a place many players want to go. No history of success. Mediocre weather. No nightlife. Unless you are married with young kids and for whatever reason you dont want to live in the south, they are not going to get many high end free agents or be able to extend players with no midwest connection.

Columbus is only going to draft its way to success. Waddell wasted the best pick he may ever have in Columbus and doesnt have the assets (or in my mind, the vision) to make this team a contender. They cannot compete as currently built against the aggressive teams in the East.

They should completely blow it up and start over with an entirely new front office. Hire a bunch of analytics nerds that are allergic to ice to see if they have some fresh ideas. They still probably will fail, but they will fail with creativity.

In the spirit of nuance here’s my thoughts -

I think the expectation is playoffs or bust for Zach. But amount of moves happening and this coming from EF and Lebrun can make one wonder. Don and Z literally had breakfast just before the Norris was awarded. Now they have to meet again? I think there is reason for skepticism. If this was all Pagnotta or Frank, whatever. Except it’s not anymore. My guess is Z may be seeing some of these moves and asking where is the team going from here? Maybe he’d like a splash move? Hard to know.

and its hard to do a splash move when you don't know if you are rebuilding, retooling, ect.

Honestly not worried.

Meeting BEFORE the draft is a reason for alarm because the draft is the prime time for deals. That's a trade me meeting. (Or a you're getting traded meeting).

Not saying it can't/won't happen.

My guess is this is simply a "here's what we're thinking" discussion for both sides. Z is our star. He has that right to have that sort of talk.

Now maybe if it turns out they're miles apart in hopes and plans this does go south. But do we think that? I don't. Z wants to win. So does this organization. They're going to be aligned there

The devil might be in those details. But it all might be fine in the end. For once. For us.

HFBoards had Z all wrapped up to trade to Detroit a few years back and lo and behold he wanted to stay here and that was off the back off much worse teams. Teams that went from playoffs to garbage.

The last two seasons have been the best since his first two. This isn't an organization going in the wrong direction.

My guess is that the team USA group chat has been doing some hard work on Z and they finally got him to do it.

Even in his post Norris presser, Z's answers implied he wasn't waiting to win anymore. He was complimentary of the CBJ and everything, but he never really went further than to say he was proud to play here.

One quote kind of stuck out to me at the time, but I didn't think much of it, was when he said he hoped there were guys that come after him to win a Norris in Columbus. On its face, thats a fine statement. But it make me kinda curious why he didn't say he wanted to win more Norris' here.

Probably looking too much into things right now since emotions are high.

I feel like we are gonna learn more about this discord server than the f****ing Epstein files at this point

There's alot of organizations that are getting burned by this.

One thing you don't do in today's society is piss off a billionaire and there are alot more small market/Canadian teams than there are these 8 "desirable" locations

I dont blame you for the emotions. Thats why I tried to take time and formulate my words instead of just commenting what I thought.

My question is how does Z + other players already not have an idea of what the plan is? If you were the GM - Would you not be in contact with your top players saying, how do, we feel about this?

I think people are doing the talking for him whether it meets his approval or not…

“One-thousand percent,” Waddell said. “He signed a contract. He’s got two years left on his contract, and we’re going to do everything we can to keep him long term. You can’t worry about [speculation]. What’s going to happen is going to happen.”

Should a trade request materialize, either this summer or next, inquiring GMs should know going into talks with Waddell that Waddell already has a term for what they’ll need to offer.

“My line is usually, ‘It would be a boatload,’” Waddell said. “We don’t want to trade him, but if it ever came to that, then yeah, it would be [a high price].”

You know, thinking about it, Waddell even coming out and saying something like this (along with all the speculation over the last week or so) is a bit weird. Especially since the Brady Tkachuk trade request (same group chat) was done quietly.

Maybe this isn't as sudden as this new meeting implies. Given the rampant (and growing) speculation.

They absolutely do.

For example Ottawa reached out to several key players before their major trade.

Nobody went to bat for him.

Like every comment you make fixates on Lindstrom at some point. Take a breath.

With that in mind, sounds like we can fill a lot of holes with that “boatload” and also Mateychuk, welcome to the top pair.
