Rumor: Werenski, CBJ to Meet about Future After the Draft

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
But doing it now get you a better return because the team you trade him to has two years to convince him to stay.
He’s not requesting a trade to anywhere he’s not extending to. That part is moot.

The draft is a meaningless deadline other than for draft pick trades for this current season.

I’m still not fully convinced he’s asking out, but if he is, it really sucks. Hate to have to say it, but it feels like this wouldn’t happen with Johnny still with us.

That being said, my actual take is that I’ve been skeptical of Waddell since day 1, in terms of passivity and being risk averse. He talks a lot about taking risks, but he has absolutely nothing to show for in that department. And now it may well cost us the best player in our history.

The best teams in the league nowadays are getting better thru trades- hell, that was our approach through the Jarmo years too and it worked to an extent. For all the shit Jarmo got about “brick by brick” at least he went out and bought some f***ing bricks.

I love Z

I love Z

I love Z

That said, I was pretty critical of him at the end of the year. I also didn't love his reaction to it after the fact. He's a tremendous player, but if you want a shot in the arm and a seismic culture change let's go.

Could be a disaster, or could alter the direction of our franchise. If we got a Hughes like deal but the stud be a forward we might really be a better team.

I stay start the f***in bidding. I'm not one for playing crazy hardball with players but if he gives the same ol 4 teams you HAVE to say ok give us 10 in a year.

No reason to fast track this. We have 1.5 years to make this trade. He better do it right.
Waiting depreciates the asset and makes it less likely to get a good return.

Vancouver got crap for Hughes, IMO. This is a chance to move him for a high 1st rounder in a very good draft. Or you maximize the prospects you get for a team wanting to make a big move at the draft.

Waiting doesn't do anything but ultimately drive the price down. He's got 1.5 years left on his contract, no one is going to pay much for a guy with 1 year left.

Sorry yall. You don’t meet unless there’s something to meet about. If he was intent on staying, that would just be a phone call. If he truly wanted the speculation to end he would make a statement or something.

Z is a stand up guy, who respects Waddell and this organization. Hes going to do it in person. But this is definitely happening
Didn't Waddell say he and Z had lunch together just recently too? Do not love the direction of this

If you think what Vancouver got for Hughes was bad, just wait until you see what Werenski gets when you’re only negotiating with 3 teams.

It’ll be worse.

Maybe they agreed they'd wait and see what moves they could get done before making a decision?

EDIT: Here's the quote. Note the non-definitive answer by Waddell.
THW: The Dylan Larkin trade request. I know as managers, you want to keep that stuff behind closed doors as much as possible. When that came out, did it surprise you? Is this a trend you could start to see more of moving forward?

Waddell: “Well, it’s the NBA model, you know? Players ask to be traded. They got other guys on other teams that recruit them and they ask to be traded. So I’m hoping we don’t become the NBA model but certainly that was a little surprise for all of us.”

THW: Yes. And the obvious connection because it is Larkin, you obviously have a guy in Zach Werenski. Is that something you are even remotely concerned about specific to this coming year?

Waddell: “No. I mean, you always think about it. I’m hoping we don’t have to deal with that situation, that’s for sure. I had breakfast with Werenski the day before the Norris was announced and we had a great conversation. That’s all I can go by how him and I talk about things going forward.”

I agree with you .. has to be done right of course .. but there is blood in the water with teams desperate to improve for this season .. that leads to people making trades , especially picks and prospects when you are talking about one of the best defenseman in the league

Usually I would ignore but the amount of stuff coming out .... really makes me curious.
Yeah we went from obvious rumor to "where there's smoke, there's fire" really fast here.

When it was just a couple of reporters repeating it I was skeptical... but if every talking head in the game is mentioning this regularly... hello full rebuild.

Two weeks after the Norris announcement. Just two weeks. Just two g-ddamn weeks.

G-d forbid any of us ever be allowed to have nice things, apparently.

What is there to look forward to at this point? Trade return? Don't be f***ing absurd. It'll just be more pointless lottery tickets that will either bust or beg out. That's all that happens. That's all that ever happens, no matter what we do or who we fire or who we hire or what or where or ANYTHING AT ALL.

Why am I still here? Why am I still trying? It's never going to be worth it. There's never going to be a payoff. Not at this rate. Not with how this keeps happening.

i get why people default to “hacks making it up for clicks” when they see a headline they don’t like, but lebrun wouldn’t run with it if he wasn’t hearing something from someone.

seravalli? sure. lebrun, no.

friedman also mentioned over a year ago that columbus had to start winning to keep werenski. he wasn’t making that up back then, either.

why wait? it’s clear that waddell has nothing up his sleeve. utterly juiceless old hockey man sitting in the big seat.
Right? Just pull off the bandaid. We know it’s happening at this point. Let him make the deal then promote Nash to GM to bumble through another failed rebuild and regroup in 2035 once everyone has been fired.

Yep. This has been my worry the whole time with him. Passive and risk averse in a league where the top teams all improve through trades. Waddell should be the one getting all the shit Jarmo got for “it’s in the room”.

The cart has inched ahead of the horse. Maybe Z wants to pledge his loyalty in person rather than a phone call? The correct thing is to do it in person regardless of the meetings purpose…

You know I remember at Johnny's memorial when Z said "thanks for choosing us when no one else would." And now it looks like you aren't choosing us like everyone else when we are in a better position than we were when Johnny signed. How about you live by your own words Z.
