No Toronto has no depth , we actually have some . No Little and no Buff and we are finding ways to win .
Have you looked objectively at our fourth line, and our D pairings?

Yes and they aren't great but we are still finding ways to win , put Little in and you take one of the 4th line guys out and put Buff in and take one of the 3rd pair of defenseman out . Team looks alot better .Have you looked objectively at our fourth line, and our D pairings?
This statement may actually be true.
may actually be true? You imply some level of doubt.
There is no question Helle is our MVP this year, but there are other factors at play, as well. One of the biggest is that our overall system appears to have evolved to meet the limitations of the D--lemonade from lemons. That's sometimes recognized as coaching. Another, more recent phenomenon, is the reconfiguration of the top-6 with Little's injury, in which Wheeler has willingly and effectively stepped away from Scheifele. The final one worth mentioning is team cohesion: rumors of imminent revolt appear to have been exaggerated, or--forgive me for imagining this--fabricated.
Careful , you are boardering on giving Maurice a little credit and that's crazy talk .
3 posts in a row all giving Maurice some tentative credit and I agree with all 3. While many posters around here still throw everything they can conger up at Maurice the evidence is strongly suggesting he has done a really good job with this team this season. For a team with so called "ruffled feathers" last season he sure has them fighting together as a tight group this season. Part of that IMO was the reaching out to important players like Laine in the off season and getting them to buy in to a team first game. We have since seen Patty become a far more complete player. While Laine deserves most of the credit Maurice did well in managing the situation.Team does look pretty tight. Wheeler was quoted as saying he wants to show the young guys on his line how to drive play and bring it every shift, because of that he appears to have found another step, not sure why he didn't bring that effort on the top line every night. That line will breakout soon in a big way, they are sure playing well.
Lastly, the other factor that has us succeeding as mentioned before is taking the fewest penalties in the league. When down yesterday I sure like how we prevented TB's zone entry on their PP's. Our D's forced dump ins all night and retrieved well and won battles on the wall, their physical strength showed as an overall strength on the wall.

The Buff situation could of then thrown everything off the rails especially followed by a rash of early season injuries to the defense. Again this was managed well and used as a bit of a rallying cry by the team that has now forged an identity as being "scrappy", but at the same time keeping penalties to a minimum.
I'm seeing similarities to how Gallant managed LV's 1st season. Gallant another old school coach who knew the best path to success was to develop an us against the world mentality in a bunch of "cast offs". Maurice is creating a nobody believes in you attitude that gets amp up with each set back. I still think Maurice is a middle of the road on the technical side, but he is a great communicator that has been pushing the right buttons with this team.
We all go on bad runs as fans. I had been at 3 loses in a row and then was at the game against the Canucks last Friday and all seemed better. Since then the wins keep rolling in. More and more I'm getting the feeling this team has a very different mind set than last season. Less talent, but much more fight.
The margins are so paper thin in the league that if you get .930 level goaltending from your starter it’s hard to not be in a playoff spot. The Jets are undermanned but at least they are scrappy but we will go as far as Helle’s insane run takes us.
I am taking this season one game at a time and loving any win we can grab. We are not a contender level with this D unit but anything is possible with .930 goaltending.
I am Proud of Hellebuyck, fans tend to be quick to criticize and slow to praise. He is having a career year to date so hopefully he can keep it rolling for a while.
That’s how we did so well two years ago. It’s a team sport and we didn’t play that way for the past 12 months or so. You can see it building again. Still some work to do but coming together.Yeh this appears to be a tight group of guys. That can be just as important if not more then having the necessary talent to win in this league.
No.
I do agree that refs were letting us go unpunished. Certainly a couple hits that should have been called IMO.
Thought your goalie was the difference in this one, and Winn played a very solid game. See you later on the season.
Lemieux leads the entire NHL in PIM with 45, to go along with his 1 goal and 6 points.
Kulokov leads the Jets with 18 PIM and the next highest player (Lowry) has 9.
Good riddance indeed!
All your comments are welcome here even if they may be perceived as negative; even after a win.Great win, but I still hate the fact that Wheeler replaces Laine with the empty net... Sends as bad of a message as Connor staying and Laine on the bench...
How about Laine playing the second fiddle on the PP? He's our superstar and PoMo needs to support that goddammit!!
Better a few too many penalties with a solid 4th liner than for us to be soft and lacking a 4th liner. Lemieux would also be better than Copp on pp as he was a master at getting too the front of the net, screening and tipping.Lemieux took too many stupid penalties...and some attitude stuff brought up here on the boards.
Good riddance.
Chariot...well it would be nice to have him here right now...but he needed a payday and we weren't going to give him one.
I never write off a team. I've been surprised all my life by teams that were given up for dead and then came together and found success. I start with the fact that we have a young and very talented core group of players that are more than capable of being the heart of a champion. And as you mentioned we have a goalie that can have long periods of outstanding play. Once the Buff situation plays out Chevy will very likely have more than adequate cap space to shore up holes. The margin between winning and losing in the NHL is very close for the majority of teams and we are in that group where things can go one direction or the other. So far I like the direction it is going. At least some of the time, they are far more entertaining.
But lets not start thinking they are actually good. It wasn't the number of shots they surrendered last night. It was the quality of the chances they gave up. If not for Helle that game could easily have been 11-3. And it has been Helle in game after game.
Nice to see them starting to score a little.
Wheeler had a good game. He's trying to play like a centre is supposed to and not doing too badly.
As long as Niku is willing to throw a few hits and play with a bit of an edge.Team is beginning to work as hard first, exploit their talent second. Finding their inner spirit and learning how to win. Now just swap out Niku (when ready) for Kulikov, open the game up for Pionk. And it really amps up if Bourque and Little can come back to add experience to a much tighter 4th line. Looking more like a potential contender every game.
At the Tampa airport this morning, even a couple of the locals admitted that the Bolts got away with some questionable non-calls. The slash on Ehlers at the end of the period featured prominently in at least one highlights package here.
Not really... Why would he send Wheeler out there every time if not to send a message "you are still relevant"? The same applies to Laine, just that it's a negative message.
He might do net front well, but his scoring does not make up for the amount of penalties he takes. The last thing our beleaguered defense Corp needs is another 45+ minutes short handed.Better a few too many penalties with a solid 4th liner than for us to be soft and lacking a 4th liner. Lemieux would also be better than Copp on pp as he was a master at getting too the front of the net, screening and tipping.
Of all the coaches in the league Maurice may be sitting the most safely. I’ve never understood a lot of the criticism that goes his way, except the one about loading up the first line too much and playing it to the ground. He’s taken a team comprising mostly of AHL defenders and an AHL fourth line and turned it into a playoff team. Of course Hellebuyck is the real reason for that, it’d be hard not to be in a playoff spot with his current play, but Maurice is a good coach and quite possibly the most charming man on earth.
Too bad we gave up Lemieux and Chariot. Both would be great for us this season.
Lemieux took too many stupid penalties...and some attitude stuff brought up here on the boards.
Good riddance.
Chariot...well it would be nice to have him here right now...but he needed a payday and we weren't going to give him one.
I can't speak for locker room/attitude issues, but Lemieux has actually had a positive penalty differential since 2018.Lemieux leads the entire NHL in PIM with 45, to go along with his 1 goal and 6 points.
Kulokov leads the Jets with 18 PIM and the next highest player (Lowry) has 9.
Good riddance indeed!
