Interesting note from Elliotte Friedman this evening:

What would a deal for this contract look like? Would Montreal have to add a pick? Would they demand a pick or player as compensation?

Why would Montreal add a pick? Weber is LTIR'd. Habs don't need to dump the contract. i believe the context of the conversation was that teams would be interested in Weber's contract for cap purposes.

The last 4 years of Weber contract are very low actual salary of $1M for 3 of them. Some teams looking toget to the floor could take on his contract…but what teams can really take on that come year 4. Not many.

What's the year 4 risk? He isn't going to officially retire.

I'm not sure why the Habs would move the contract? He's on LTIR and obviously not coming back. He's not costing them anything really is he? What kind of piece would it take to acquire that contract?

Weber has a cap hit 25 million dollars higher than his salary over the next 4 years? Hmm, isn't there a team that is cutting there gate revenue by like 75% over that exact same time period that is known for doing these kinds of trades...
This is old stuff, they changed it.

???

I'm talking about Arizona getting a LTIR contract with a cap hit that is greater than dollars paid. That's an evergreen suggestion. I assume you somehow thought I was talking about cap recapture for some reason?

Yeah. Thought you were going on about a $25m cap hit. All good.

Couple of possible reasons ~ he technically is costing them, in the sense that they need to be cap compliant to open the season. Someone far more proficient in cap matters can probably explain it far better than me, but basically it can complicate any moves they try to make. He also takes up a contract slot.

As to your final question, I very much doubt he has much, if any, value. Sure, Montreal can play the '"We're rebuilding and don't really care" card, but teams flush with cap space will have plenty of options, some of which that will involve being paid assets to take on salary.
