(We now have to look at and worry about) The Standings.

Why does anyone care about the standings. 1-8 is all the same. We're not going to miss the playoffs. Every single East matchup is a ECF regardless where you place.

The 4 losses in a row showed us everything we need to know.

We need to make sure we have above average goaltending + hard fought play in the playoffs.

Example: You want Benoit type play when a kicked puck is sliding over the goal line. Not the soft swipes from Liljegren. Benoit would have "get the F out of here" to that puck with ease. Also, when Drai's weak back hand went in, I already knew our lead is gone.

The way we throw games away is a joke. We should have 19 of the last 20 points if these 2 things get fixed. Care about that for the Cup. Not the meaningless President's Trophy.

This team has effectively clinched the playoffs too many years way too early.

I want them scratching in this season. Playoff seeding is pointless in this sport. Fighting to get in by the skin of your teeth might do this team good. Nothing else has worked.
Not a bad way to look at it.

I love the "soft swipes" description. It's sort of how I see him play most of the time.

I think that TOR can compete, make the playoffs, and go deeper than before.

Let's not forget that players like Bertuzzi and Domi are forwards other teams try to acquire at the deadline. We already have them signed.

I do think we have enough assets right now (without giving up a huge amount) to fill in holes at the deadline.

1 depth forward and 1 top 4 D rental doesn't have to cost a lot.

Let's see what Treliving does in Feb/March. It could be an impact without giving up a lot.

I don’t think we will make the playoffs comfortably at all. We have one of the most difficult remaining schedules in the league. It doesn’t bode well for a team that lacks intensity and character.

Making the playoffs alone would be quite the achievement for this group which should tell us enough about how they’re constructed and coached.

If Treliving is serious about this season in particular then he should have already acquired some depth on D at the very least. Scoring depth is also lacking on this team.

One squeaky win against Calgary doesn’t change my mindset that this team needs new direction behind the bench. Look at how effective Tocchet has been for Vancouver. Keefe has had so much time to make meaningful impact with the same core but the team still plays the exact same way they did when he first started coaching here. Only difference is that we are noticeably more fragile and the back end including goaltending is arguably the worst it has been in the Matthews era.

The way we've played this season, it does seem like making the playoffs is far from being a given. Tied for 8th in the East by PTS%, and that's with a roster that's been healthy all season except for our rookie goaltender.

Like game 3 against the Panthers last season?
Game 7 in 2022, 2021, 2019, 2018 or Game 5 in 2020?

Yea, they have have great track record of turning it on when there is trouble in sight.:shakehead
Comparing game 7 and playoffs to regular seasons games is a different beast.

We need more than a depth F and a top 4 dman. This team is either trying to win it all or just win one round? There may be a point we realize this team won't do squat.

IMO we need two top 4 Dmen. This team ain't doing squat, that's been clear to me for a while and I can only hope Treliving gets it too cause if he trades away futures for rentals, I'm gonna puke.

More like "Days of our Leafs".

Except these guys have money than those losers on tv.

Missing the playoffs is probably what this team needs.
As bad as they look, and yes, they might be a mid 90's points team, who behind them is going to beat them out?

I'd say Jersey, but they just can't go 2 full weeks without being decimated by injuries. Pittsburgh? maybe...but I can't see Pitt or Washington being good enough to put together another long winning streak like they did earlier in the year. Buffalo? Too far back, they lost their season when injuries destroyed them earlier, and they aren't good enough yet to put a big enough streak together to close the gap. Islanders? Just not good enough.

As bad as I think it is possible for the Leafs to be the remainder of the regular season, I do not have faith that TWO of Wash, Pitt, Jersey, Islanders, or Buffalo will pass them.

Chill. No we don't. Leafs are a great team. Showing so many positive signs. Matthews and Nylander having seasons for the ages. An awesome PP. They never give back and come back from being behind. They are never out of it. They are great with the goalie pulled which means they have the ability to score with the pressure on. All these things will lead them to glory. Oh, and they are doing this without their best goalie, who will be back when it matters the most. Everything is fine.

I think a top 4 d-man does this team wonders, but if it is a LEGITIMATE top 4 guy....not a 5/6 guy who you can convince yourself he is a top 4 guy if you try really hard.

A solid, 18 minute per night guy who is a vet that doesn't make mistakes and knows how to get the puck out of his zone. Doesn't need to be an offensive juggernaut, but if they found a guy like that, this team is immediately MUCH better.

Problem is, 25-30 year old legit good 2nd pair guys are very, very hard to get.

Toronto just needs to stay ahead of Tampa and Detroit, and ideally pass Florida.

I can honestly say on their current trajectory this team will miss the playoffs. That makes management look inept and ownership liars. " Dont worry we will win a cup." This team isnt winning any cup and every fan questioned their moves. I think missing the playoffs and becoming a seller at TD maybe the only solution. The upper echelon are in total denial but the fans arent. This team is hot garbage and overpaid.

Luckily for us I don't see how we can lose wild card spot. I'm not buying all the teams in the vicinity sucking less.

With all respect to Islanders..

This.

You might be on to something. If they lose the next 5 they might struggle enough to get it to develop some character.

Still hanging on.

I hope they keep winning. I just can't see TOR being sellers. If Tre does minor additions that will be fine by me.

I think many fans on this board have said all along that they wouldn't be a top tier team, and that they would need upgrades at the deadline.

I don't think a wild card spot will even come into play. They will stay ahead of Detroit and Tampa. Both of those teams are even more inconsistent than the Leafs.
