Alright so this team missing the playoffs is completely unacceptable.

That said... Does anyone else think it might be the actual gut punch this team needs?

Like if we're selling at the deadline and retooling this off-season... What a wake up call.

Obviously I'm hoping for the Leafs to win as much as possible but years of first round mediocrity just have us stuck in a rut.

They aren't going to miss the playoffs. They aren't going to be "sellers" at the deadline (quite the opposite, I suspect). Don't get attached to the first round pick....

Oh I fully realize it isn't likely. I'm not even really looking at the draft.

But if the hypothetical does happen as would seem to be the fear in this thread.... It might actually be more interesting than yet another mediocre playoff.

Assuming that is of course our fate but...a lot has to change from current day to then to avoid that in my estimation.

I'd venture that we both know what is going to happen in the short-term - the Leafs will beat Calgary on Thursday, and all of the noise will quiet down until the Vancouver game. If they find a way to win that one, it will be back to which defensemen they should trade for.

This is the way.

.... Though I assume by that you mean which two defenders, goalie, and 3C should we trade for without giving up our top prospects, right? ;)

@Commander Clueless after 8 years, our core hasn't learned how to win, so a gut punch is needed at some point. When one of the core comes out, and thinks they are doing enough right now, that's a bad sign. It appears we do need a retool, and trades, perhaps selling at the deadline might be the best thing for real success. Certainly we've seen other franchises go through the same thing, adjustments to the core, before success... Tampa, Colorado, St. Louis all went through this, before finding the winning formula.

@Evilhomer your predictions haven't been going very well, so excuse me if I don't believe it this time. You had insisted that we'd absolutely be first in the division by now... which with how they've played, is a bit laughable... as recently as last week, you predicted they'd finish first in the division. THis version of the Leafs is even more flawed than others, and it's clear we need change to actually succeed.

I would argue that they've actually overachieved based on their shitty D core and inexperienced/sub-par goaltending.

The D is bottom 10 in the league, you cannot win in the playoffs with this roster

This. 100%

Clearly MLSE can't run a hockey club.

We need Detroit and Montreal to go on a streak. Lower our ranking. Put pressure on MLSE to get rid of Keefe, and make a move for new direction.

1. Keep assets this season. We arent doing anything.
2. Hope JT gets a contract somewhere warm to retire.
3. Don't sign that overpaid undersized winger Marner. His comments to media after a 4 game skid on blown leads were disgusting.

And Keefe gushing over Avs top line as a coach of the team that just lost is cu*k level of cringe

Reminds me of the Bolts handshake.

JESUS F... C.....

We need to retool. New Coach. New culture.
New leadership.
Different Team DNA

For now its Go Vancouver. Go Winnipeg. Go Edmonton. Go Montreal. For Canada 🇨🇦

Go Detroit to heat up Keefes seat.

I think firing Keefe would be the wrong move, but the right move for MLSE. It’s inevitable that they will go on a run with a new coach, but in the long run, it’s putting lipstick on a pig (no offence Auston).

I'm really starting to think this team needs the drama to wake up and make moves.

I don't even dislike the guy, but there's no way Keefe should still be head coach of this team. I can't help but think most franchises would have moved on after being stuck in a time loop playoff wise.

Either way, I don't think there's any way we avoid a retool this offseason. Lots of expiring deals and a team construction that has been absolutely devastated by what is turning out to be terrible offseason signings with a dash of player regression.

Strip it down and get me some asshole forwards who can play defense (we know the core ain't sticking up for themselves so we need some players who can), a couple of actual top 4 defenders, and....I'm not even sure what to do with the goaltending but....something, probably.

You never learn do you?

Didn't you say we'd be in first place by the end of January? you predicted we'd win the last four games and we lost every single one. What happened?

The brackets in the tittle make little sense to me, but I agree this is like before Babcock was fired. The scary part is that this core was permitted to burn through another coach, with one of the broken links getting a very hefty outlier contract raise. They will keep rotating coaches until it’s too late to realize this team is fundamentally broken and no coach will change this teams course.

It doesn't feel right this season. I hope Brad doesn't give away picks or players at the dead line. If we limp into the playoffs, so be it. If we don't make it, could be the bitch slap this team needs. And I'm thinking that slap is phrased correctly.

Bringing in a high profile guy just before the playoffs seems like getting slapped. So this is our savior type thing. A middle of the road guy would be more like he is here to help not take over.

I have no idea if they will win that game or not. I was more implying that the nature of this team is to win when it shouldn't and lose when it shouldn't.

Montreal lost a 2-0 Lead. NJ got 4 PP to MTL's 1 ( USA vs Can teams ofcourse LOL )
Fought back and held on to the lead 3-2.

The fight in Suzuki and Caufield in crunch time is different than our top 3... ( Last 4 games anyway )
Tavares is just aging, it used to be him going all out.

Heads will turn if these guys crap the bed in Calgary and Van...

Wings won tonight too. And Florida got a point. We’re closer to Montreal in the standings than we are Florida.

So you’re saying, Execute or be executed

Missing the playoffs could be the best thing to happen to the team in a long time. No major injuries to blame. Then maybe, just maybe we'd see a proper shakeup.

Another 2nd-3rd place division finish just to win a couple playoff games? What's the f***ing point? Just to run it back again

I’m not sure even missing the playoffs would change anything
