Post-Game Talk: We Lawst

Except for the one play where Kane was wide open in the slot and Panarin chose a chest snipe instead. It’s been very frustrating watching these two so far, but I have confidence they will come around.

The fact that the team was very much in this game today is a positive takeaway for me. They were playing short handed, down 2 top four D, playing 3 in four nights, and trying to integrate a newly acquired superstar.

Let’s see how they look on Thursday before hitting the panic button.
I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but I didn't see it as being in the game. If I recall correctly, the announcers stated the Boston coach revealed his strategy in a pre-game interview stating that Rangers were tired and they would attempt to wear us down. And that is exactly what they did: they didn't have to overwhelm us; they did it slowly and systematically: throwing pucks behind our D and hitting them and/or beating them to the pucks; then they started hitting the forwards while keeping their game simple and bide their time. Their defensive game was simple as well: they had players and sticks in the passing lanes and gave us very little ice to operate. The final piece was capitalizing on mistakes -- and they did.

We had a shit breakout system under Quinn too. My #1 expectation (hope) with the new coach Gallant was that he would fix the transition issue (along with not screwing the kids over). That hope was dashed two games into his tenure after his first pre-season when it became obvious he had no clue about transition or rather, doesn't care much. Coaches or management I don't care where the real issue is, but this has to be fixed.
The last time we played fast and the rush guys (like Panarin) were any good is when we had DeAngelo.

I understand, obviously, moving on from DeAngelo, but we kind of just shrugged our shoulders and went "you know what? it's fine if only one pair can move the puck."

Even Fox is more of a shutdown defenseman who's good at offense and ridiculously good on the powerplay.

We don't have an honest-to-God rush defenseman on the roster and people sit here going "why doesn't Gallant have his D be more active???"

I like the idea of Miller-Fox because Miller has shown flashes of joining the rush. Fox could handle the first pass (which Miller stinks at) and cover for him when he jumps in. The problem with that is the other pairs would all be AHL-caliber.

That team just sucked because they had no depth and old ass Lundqvist was dying all over the ice (sorry), but I didn't hate the way they played.

I absolutely do not dispute we have D that are slow to move the puck (Fox with his gigabrain apart) but it is AGAIN a choice of management and the coaches to go with big dudes who are slow at catching up. Many of us were desperately hoping Jones could step up as a puck moving D to help with transition but his size made the coaches jump on every mistake, where they don't care if Miller or Schneider screw up because they are Big boys. This issue is exasperated by having coaches that don't care about a modern transition game.

It is NOT the choice of the coach of who's on his D corps.

That's Sather's latest lackey going after Sather's "type."

I don't think Jones was treated unfairly. He was ineffective at moving the puck in the looks he got.

I definitely think we should give Jones another shot over Harpoon or whoever the f*** else we already know sucks.

That being said, this isn't like when Gorton got Yandle and Staal and was practically on his knees like "please use these guys and bench Glass." There's no indication that the front office wants Jones here.

Shesterkin sucks. That’s the biggest issue. Has been all season
150% agree.

It’s making me increasingly angry just because I remember our most recent contending teams where our goalie had no room for error and our team couldn’t score and we almost won but came up just short. Now we have the most offensively talented lineup we’ve had in the last 30 years and I’m feeling more and more like our goalie is going to blow this opportunity for us.

He’s been off the entire season. He hasn’t looked good all year, even when he had a run of games he didn’t look how he did last year. I’m fearing he’s more Jim Carey than he is Henrik Lundqvist.

He’s been unable to come up with the big timely save at all this season. He hasn’t stolen a game. He’s been mediocre to the core all season. This is the most concerning thing about this team to me more than anything else.

I miss the game due to work and Laf scores two beauties.

Matched last year's points total. If only he got more ice time.

Shesterkin being mediocre is the best thing for us long-term.

When the time comes, we can walk away instead of paying $10m on a random number generator.

Goalies aren't real. Parents made them up to scare their children, like Santa Claus. $3m max.

One thing I noticed about teams like Boston and Carolina is they are able to transition quickly and are through the neutral zone quickly as well. Our D Outside of Fox can’t do that, and if they are rushed ends up as a turnover or an icing.

I don’t think we get pinned in our zone too much, and think that’s on the forwards helping the D get the puck out of danger. I think we have a good group of defensive forwards.

If we could speed up that transition game into the rush and make it more crisp, players like Kane would flourish, imo.

Exactly what I'm saying.

People get on the breakdowns but our forwards help more than they get credit for.

They have to because a forward usually has to come back to make the first pass.

Beyond that, teams give up good chances. I don't know what to tell you.

I did say management. Jones was not ready but the point was that we knew puck movement from the D is needed.

We do get pinned too much, there was like a 3 minute shift at one point in our zone. When we do get the puck out it's 90% of the time just a swatted puck up the ice in the general direction of someone (a desperate clear or a stretch pass) and not a controlled swift break out that gets our forwards jumping up the ice (Devils, Bruins, Canes, Avs). When Panarin eg is back in our zone and gets the puck on his stick he has no one to pass too, everyone is stationary because we play a stupid zone marking system that has the wingers stationary by the walls and the C down by the goalline helping the D out. Panarin has to wait a second for the team to start going up the ice, by then the opponents have fallen back into position and our transition hits a wall. Repeat again and again.

To counter this issue the team has some forwards "cheat" and try to get into the neutral zone before the opponent´s D has had time to set up and hit the forward with a stretch pass. Only this is easily seen and countered and again the transition hits a wall. Repeat again and again.

That's the entire issue.

Except we had the one in a million goalie who was real and gave us reliably elite goaltending you could set your watch to for over a decade and we gave him teams that averaged 2.2 goals per game in the playoffs. If we had prime Hank right now this team might be unbeatable. I think that’s why it’s bothering me so much because I’m seeing a team with more skater talent than I’ve ever seen on the Rangers and our goalie who was amazing last year looks like he can’t stop a beach ball half the time. It’s pretty brutal just the irony that goaltending could sink us when it was our biggest strength last year. With Igor just being a mediocre goalie we don’t have the edge in net in any series.

The contract stuff could be a minor solace but it’s not giving me any good vibes for the right now lol.

I'm not even close to the cliff, this team needs to gel, its almost like we are back at the start of the season with so many new faces and being short handed. I have no doubt all our top players will be better once Miller and Lindgren are back as well as when we have a proper sized roster. I don't care who looked like what the last week, this team will rise to the occasion, there's way too much talent there.

Kane should never have joined the pp until he had a few games in and a few practices in. Tarasenko was just starting to work there.
yeah, the first unit looked good w Tarasenko. Fox, Panarin, Kane are all great passers. Maybe they can weave around or something. Otherwise not a lot happening

I think people are putting too much stock in how we've played since we had to shorten our roster, one night we couldn't even play Schneider and the last couple nights we are without two left side d in our top 4 and lost Motte last game. The way we played with bottom 6 and Ahl dmen in our top 4 isnt indicitive of how we will play when we have the proper d in the proper slots. People are losing their shit and i guarantee nobody in the organization is concerned until we run a bad 5 or 6 games with our d back and the new players acclimatized.

I just think it was asking a lot from Kane who hadnt played for a bit and l had no reps with our pp.
