Pouliot, Sutter, Scuderi 1st for Kessel
Kunitz, Spaling for Marchand, Talbot (doesn't matter if it makes sense because nothing they do makes sense)

Sign Plotnikov and Tikhonov

Marchand-Crosby-Hornqvist
Perron-Malkin-Kessel
Plotnikov-Tikhonov-Bennett
Sundqvist-Talbot-Dupuis

That looks phenomenal.

Has there been an absolute dead line announced by either team? The only thing I have read was something about Kessel do a 4 mill bonus after July 1st.

Is it possible the deal is done and the Penguins are waiting for TML to pay the bonus?

I don't want another Hossa comparable incident happening where we waited too long and all the other options dried up and what remained was less than desirable.

There hasn't been a deadline set, but it's been assumed that July 1 is the drop dead date because all the moving pieces and salary will greatly affect how each team goes about shopping for UFAs and other deals.

The bonus, I've been told by other board members, has nothing to do with the wait or trade in general.

If this was our lineup on opening night, I would fully forgive this organization for 5+ years of frustration.

"Simon Despres will be traded" - Simon Despres is traded.

The Pens are going after Phil Kessel

Yeah, I haven't any difficulties following your predictions. They make a lot of sense, and I appreciate your posting them here, IC.

I don't want Talbot back.

Whether the Pens want to wait until after July 1st to trade for Kessel so that Toronto has to pay that bonus to him is certainly an interesting angle to follow.

I'd probably give Pouliot and the 1st with either the cap dumps (Scuds/Kunitz) or some salary retention on Kessel's deal. I'd hate to lose another 1st though. We already don't have a 2nd next year.

Ok thanks.

I just don't want another Hossa "incident" ever again.

I'd like to see us make a run at Stafford. I have always thought he'd look good with how Sid.

My question with a Kessel acquisition is, "are there enough pucks?"

You're talking about a winger who like to drive the play. He'd be playing with two centers who like to drive the play. That's a tough one to answer.

That would definitely take care of the top 6 speed issue.

First line would be the most annoying line in hockey.

Zac Rinaldo just got Philly a 3rd round pick in return. Zac ****ing Rinaldo. If JR can't find a trade partner to take Kunitz/Scuderi, then he's just not doing his job.

I do not get people conflating the general concept of we give too many draft picks away, and do not properly develop those that we do take, and a trade for guys like Perron and Kessel for a middling first (though Kessel would have pluses of course).

There is zero connection between the two. Those guys produce. As stars or borderline stars. Now. Middling firsts will get you more than 100 games only slightly more than half the time. In any capacity at all, even a sucky fourth liner.

Crosby and Malkin have slightly more than half a decade in their primes.

You give up a middling first for trades like that every day of the week.

Those kind of trades have zero to do with the concept of the Pens giving away draft picks too freely. Save those complaints for the sucky rental trades that they make every year.

I think you knocked this out of the park. Murray, Winnik, those are bad trades for picks. Perron could put up 30 next year with Sid or Geno and Kessel could do 40.

Sid has put up Rocket Trophy winning numbers saddled with Dupuis and Kunitz. You give him Kessel?! And some wouldn't trade a first rounder for that kind of production? Yikes.

Indeed. Dunno why the Hurricanes didn't extend an offer. It's not like they're brimming with talent.

Or that he'd cost all that much money. He made 575,000 last season, so you're talking about a contract worth less than 700k.

Talbot was injured a lot when he was here. He's now quite old for a guy who played the game the way he did. Could a return to Pittsburgh rejuvenate him a bit? Probably for a stretch of games, but he'd undoubtedly wear down.

There's really no ex-Penguin that should be considered being brought back at this point.

I dunno. I think we could stand to see Libor Pivko back in the Black n' Gold.

The question I posed and still do is if we get Kessel how does he fit under the cap? He will take a sizable portion of it and then what? What about the rest of our lines? Did we just say **** you Malkin again? Play with what we give you? Where is his help? What about our depth that so many have preached through last season and the playoffs? Where does that money come from? So many of you want ONE big line but how does that help us? Maybe I'm missing something?

I'm all for getting Kessel but what concerns me is the what next? What about what its going to take to get him. Will that completely drain what little talent/prospects we have? Should we even consider it?

According to General Fanager, we have 11,568,334 in cap space as of right now. If you add Kessel (8), and subtract Kunitz (3.85), Scuderi (3.375), and Sutter (3.3) you end up with 14,093,334 in cap space.

Well, that's nice, but that's insanely unreasonable.

With us not having a second we need to protect in some manner because I don't see how we'd get a 2nd. We can't have more seasons with a pick in the top two rounds.

If we could get another 3rd in that deal and then trade two of those for a second that would work I guess.

Amazing what opens up when you get rid of the dead weight on this team.

Just top five or so protected. I would say to pick seven. If the pick is then it goes to 2017.

That is not unreasonable.

That's different than saying "Hey, Toronto, if we win the Cup, you get a first round pick, otherwise see you in 2017 suckazzz". As much as I like the idea of ****ing over another club, I can't see much incentive for the Leafs to agree to that, unless their position is THAT BAD.

And I doubt it's THAT BAD.

With a return of Kessel? Sure we can. It's not ideal by any means, but it's not the death sentence you're making it out to be.
