Much like the Calgary series, I don't think either team is worried until they lose a game on home ice. I also don't think we'll see any other games in this series like this. The goaltending on both sides is a huge question mark though, so honestly who knows.

Also will be curious if Bednar keeps matching up the top lines or if he switches it up. I thought the Mackinnon line was excellent in the first period, and then got progressively worse as the game went along matched up against McDavid.

That was not playoff hockey. It was an exhibition all star showcase pond hockey game. Honestly these series in the west have mostly been an embarrassment. The goaltending is horrific, there is not an ounce of defense being played, there is no physical play, no intensity. After watching this game, now watch tomorrow and how quickly the difference in level of intensity will be. Anybody who likes the garbage that was on tonight is too enamored with go go go more more more. Flash and Dash. People going gaga over Makar, my opinion, I still take a defenseman like Hedman over him any day.

If you repeat it in a third thread, maybe someone will finally care.

Love all the Oilers fans burying their head in the sand when it comes to the 'offside goal' when there is literally video explanation that it isn't offside. In case you haven't seen it, here it is:

@6:15.
Thank you for posting that. I wouldn't say that anyone is burying their heads in the sand. That video contradicts the written rule, but based on your post, the league has addressed it in some manner. You have to admit that releasing video explanations like this that directly contradict the official NHL rulebook is not a good way of getting consensus on these plays.

You’re right, not a great night as a whole for the d core, thankfully they still won even though they were subpar and Kuemper was a sieve. As said all along, jack johnson will get turnstiled and it was seen as he and Manson were solidly outplayed. The rest of the d core played exactly as advertised but let’s make grandiose presumptions!

Nice to see Makar and Toews put up the same amount of points as Mcdavid and Draisaitl. Funny that, if only those “lol” worthy defencemen could do it outside of garbage time and could contribute to a win.
Still....Lol at their "defence"
"He scored the points, what do you want from a defenceman, to play defence??"

MacGinnon doesn't have anything in his arsenal besides skate fast with puck.

Once opposing defenses figure him out and adjust after game 1 he disappears.

Look at the Blues series. 2 points in game 1. Then goose eggs until the Blues had to shift coverage to Kadri.

Bednar is smarter than he looks. He knows the MacGinnon line draws attention and the Aves have enough depth to beat most teams. But McDavid doesn't just play defense. He'll shut down MacGinnon and put up 3 goals a game at the same time.

I'm in genuine shock that the Aves won a game. Without being spotted two goals by the league the Aves don't have a chance.

This is true, but does anyone objectively feel like Calgary is as good a team as Colorado?
No, but I was just trying to enlighten the original poster who appeared to think that the Oilers hadn’t gotten lit up like this previously.

At the end of the day though, the Avs also got lit up pretty good, so I don’t think either team should feel overly confident after one game.

Oh 100% and i've said multiple times that the NHL is inept for this reason. I actually really like they provided video explanations to make it clear cut, but they decided to more or less say 'f*** it' when it comes to the actual written rulebook.

If you want to be a Debbie downer then to each their own, but just stick to baseball 1-0 complete games. Avs had plenty of intense ozone sequences, good minute+ of ozone cycle domination. Was there some weak goals, sure, but there was also a lot of bardown, cross crease crisp passing plays. Goals were basically scored in every form.

It'll tighten up a little, always does, but there's way more offensive firepower in this series. As an oiler fan, whatever team comes out of the west is going shock the east coast "defensive king" babies, with how lethal these offenses are.

But how about that JT Compher, amirite?!

How does it directly contradict the rulebook?

I'm simultaneously more at peace with it and more frustrated. 😂

Regardless of how you feel about the game, the Oilers are very much in this series. A few people will be offended by what I just said, but they truly are.

My team is the Pens. I really haven't watch either of these teams much. Their goalies aren't this bad, right?

How does it directly contradict the rulebook?
The written rule cites a player having control and possession as being the standard for zone entry, with possession meaning:

The last player to physically touch the puck with his stick or body shall be considered in possession of the puck. (NOTE 1) A player can have possession of the puck without control, but he cannot have control of the puck without possession.

...and control meaning:

“Control of the puck” means the act of propelling the puck with the stick, hand or feet.

The video explanation that was posted is now saying that control and possession are irrelevant in that specific instance. I'm now on the side that the call was fine - and now just generally annoyed that it also could have been justifiably overturned by using an alternate, yet still official standard.

I dunno, everybody keeps talking about horrible goaltending, but how many soft goals was there really? If you count out all the softies and even take out a couple goals on top of that assuming some unreal saves, that game is still like 5-4 or something just because of the combination of offensive skill and horrible defense.

I like my defence to win games personally, and they won. You?

And where is this misquote coming from? Nobody said the Avs d core are elite at keeping pucks out of the net. Every Avs fan has maintained they are elite transitionally this they don’t typically spend time in their end. Your just a sad, bitter fan and that’s ok, it happens. But it’s not nice to put words in peoples mouths.
