Aves dont need Kuemper to win the Cup. They dont need Shesterkin or Vassy to win the Cup either. They are that good.
They can win it all with their back up.......or just about anybody elses back up.
Okay Avs can play with Georgiev as their goalie if the Rangers make it to the final.

The Oilers really need McDrai to outperform MacKinnon/Makar, and for the most part, they’ve just cancelled each other out. It’s been guys like Nichushkin and Compher that have been the difference. That’s always been in the scouting report on how to beat the Oilers, but easier said than done. I though Calgary had the depth to challenge them, but they did not.

Hope somebody throws Kane’s clothes in the shower. There’s a reason that guy has been run out of two different cities. He’s trash on and off the ice. I doubt MCDavid was too thrilled with him mocking the Avs from the bench in game 2. But we shouldn’t have to worry about it for the rest of this series.

I wouldn’t lump those four together.

Makar has been a tier above the other three in this series. It hasn’t come a ton on the scoresheet, but his control over these games has been immense.

Man these injuries are brutal. Kadri 100 point pace this year. 63 for Burakovsky. Girard. Kuemper.

This is still an absolute beatdown against this bad Edmonton team but these injuries are really going to hurt against any of those east teams.

Conner McDavid. Best player in the world!
Was on the ice for all 4 goals against last night.

The guy is the best offensive player currently in the NHL.
Not even close to the best player, and won’t be one of the all time greats.

You can’t play one end of the ice, then absolutely suck and give up in your own end.
That is straight up loser talk.

Give me Mackinnon any day.

Avs are really good. The Knights playoff series really helped them imo and they’re going to the Finals and should be heavily favored.

Momentum plays are real key in the playoffs though. The Rangers might make it and they certainly look different than the team who likely was going to lose to the Penguins until Crosby went down. Hearing the Canes series, which was grinding board battle, really got them into shape. So far Tampa hasn’t been able to keep up. Going from a grind vs a Tampa team which isn’t grinding has been a windfall so far.

One step at a time yet Avs are already there.

Oilers have needed a goalie for so long its mind boggling.

With the additions of Hyman, Kane this year. A stud in net they would be seriously contending. They still probably wouldnt beat the Aves.........but they would have made it interesting and not be getting swept.
Could it be perhaps that the Edmonton Oilers have a bad GM that is still stuck in the 90s and early 2000s frame of thinking? Everyone knew in 2019 when Holland was hired that the goaltending is bad, the defense is bad, the forward depth is bad, and the cap management is bad.

Flash forward 3 years and it's the same 2 goalies from 2019 except older. Nurse has improved but is more of a #2 than a true #1 (lets not pretend him playing injured throughout playoffs is indicative of his actual level), Ceci has filled in the solid 2-way dman role of Klefbom, a solid underrated defensive dman in Kulak instead of Bear, and some defensive liabilities in Keith/Barrie/Bouchard (Bouch more than earns his cap hit though with his offense). Offensive depth still sucks although at least there's Kane/Hyman now. And somehow we have almost as many bad contracts as we had with Chia: Keith/Koskinen overpaid, Hyman/RNH overtermed, Kassian overpaid AND overtermed, Nurse just... what the f***... He's been a minor improvement over Chia which is not an achievement.

It's hard to get a good roster when your GM is dog shit folks! The Oilers were a flawed roster carried by legendary performances from McDavid/Draisaitl and a mid-season saviour in Woodcroft. With those 3 running out of fuel it's not a surprise we can't keep up.

It doesn't when the Avs don't score on it 😂 Check every metric 5 on 5
The Oilers actually won the 5v5 yesterday though? Moneypuck 5v5 xGF was Edm=2.72, Col=1.15. Natural Stat Trick 5v5 xGF was Edm=2.37, Col=1.38. The difference yesteday was the goaltending, and that's the Oilers own fault b/c their dog shit general manager opted into 3 seasons in a row of Smith+Koskinen despite the entire world knowing goaltending was their weakness.

Give me Mackinnon any day.

Which of them were his fault? Genuinely curious.

Nurse deflecting the puck into his own net? Bouchard getting muscled off the puck at the end of the PP? The empty netter?

The 3 goals scored on Smith were all horrendous goals to give up.

”Not even close to the best player” is certainly a take.

And how about games 1 & 2? And from what I recall at least 3 of the penalties against the Oilers were pretty cut and dry. Kane boarding, Nurse delay of game, and the high stick call on Makar.

But yeah I can agree that Mike Smith was horrible on that Compher goal. Frankie let in a softie too though.

Actually, the game was fairly close. Both goalies let in a softie. The Oilers hit a couple of posts.

Two things killing the Oilers: bad defense and injury to Draisaitl. It really hurts to even watch him skate. I remember wincing every time Yzerman stepped on the ice in 2002 but he was carried by Fedorov and he still managed to produce and lead. Draisaitl is a liability and can get REALLY injured out there.

When Draisaitl returned to the bench last night, the commentators proclaimed "that's a sight for sore eyes." I felt exactly the opposite: "he looks horrible."
How about 25% game in the penalty box. Difficult to win games, where little to no discipline. Five minute cross checking majors, flipping puck over the boards? Discipline. Avalanche have excellent discipline.

Say what you want about this guys skill sets and salary but he showed some real silky mitts on that goal. :thumbu:
:D

That number 97 in edmonton also gave a sweet pass to Mikko.

Skilled team no doubt. Just refalanche ya know.

Man these injuries are brutal. Kadri 100 point pace this year. 63 for Burakovsky. Girard. Kuemper.

This is still an absolute beatdown against this bad Edmonton team but these injuries are really going to hurt against any of those east teams.

This is precisely why you load up for the playoffs with depth like we did.

I feel like Kadri will be back next round and if Francouz was faltering that Kuemper would already be back though.

I'm not super worried about Kuemper or Bura, but man G and Naz are big losses. Both lost to dirty hits from behind too.

Happy Oilers lost

I want to see McDavid beat Gretzkys record - and now he gets to play 7 games in round 3, which helps.

Oilers in 7

Avs should have lost this game. Blowing that many PP chances and letting in a couple bad goals is a recipe for disaster. The fact that they came out with the W speaks volumes for both teams. I feel like Edmonton gets one in game 4, but this series has the hallmarks of being a sweep.

Last year the Avs never had a healthy Erik Johnson and it hurt them because they had to play Ryan Graves on the second pairing. This year they do have a healthy Erik Johnson and they also have Jack Johnson. So they're much deeper on the blueline this year but they will need Girard back for the cup finals.

Girard has a broken sternum, he's not coming back

the good news is we don't have a Patrick Nemeth to play over Bo Byram for...reasons

This comment is very fair and probably accurate. The Avs value analytics greatly. Players like Nichushkin and Lehkonen, by many seen as great 3rd liners, are playing in the top 6 for the Avs and having a huge impact on this series. Each has had a substantial impact on this series and each (at least to this point) makes less than RNH.

The Oilers should be targeting middle 6 guys who have high compete levels and who are difficult to play against. And why exactly are they not willing to trade Holloway or Broberg? Yes they have ELCs and bridge deals but Edmontons window coincides with McDavid's and Draisaitl's window. Even once these guys start playing, how long will it be before they're truly ready to compete at the level of the Western Conference finals?
